'ello all, With Quake 4 being released today, I know I have a pretty slim chance of getting this topic noticed, but I thought I'd give it a shot anyway. :) I just installed Quake on Windows XP last night. It was the latest release(1.09) and came with Quake, WinQuake and glQuake. Of course, I had to update glQuake, pitch the damn opengl.dll thing, etc, but I got it to work. Being relatively new to Windows, I had a little bit of a hard time with that bullshit "command line resolution change" thing that gl makes you do(why couldn't they have let you do this in the game, like the Mac version does?)...but I got past it(found a post talking about creating a text document with the res. change screen, then saving it as ".bat"). My questions are: 1. Can glQuake achieve any higher res than 1024X768? Anytime I try *anything* higher I get something along the lines of "resolution not supported". I was playing Mac Quake at 1280X1024...I find it hard to believe that the PC version couldn't do that same... 2. The sound sampling rate...11025? You've got to be fucking kidding me. Is it possible to jack that up to, at least, 22100 or even(hopefully) 44100? If so, is this something I'd put in the same ".bat" document I had to make up to get glQuake to run in 1024X768? Just in case it's needed, I'm running Windows XP Home Ed., SP2 on a P4 3ghz with 1.2 gigs of ram, a SoundBlaster Live 24bit card and an AiW Radeon 9800. Any help would be most appreciated...I loved Quake back on the Mac, but do to this new monitor I've bought, believe it or not, it simply won't run(the screen and refresh rate change crashes it every time). Am loving Quake on the PC, would just like to jack up the options as much as possible. :) Thanks in advance, Bel

I think you might be SOL on your questions as far as GLQuake is concerned.
There are a few other ports out there that may support what you are looking
for, including:
GLX Pro
Nehahra (a lot of fun)

Tenabrae
http://tenebrae.sourceforge.net/
Fuhquake

I just now reinstalled it for nostalgia reasons. Hopefully there's some net
activity for DM.
I'm trying to edit the config.cfg file and add a .bat file but so far no
luck. My recollection after almost 8 years is nil.

This from one of the Quake .txt files:
SSPEED
Syntax: -sspeed <speed>
Description: This will ask the sound code to set the playback speed
within the constraints of the capabilities of the card. This is
11025 Hz by default and usually from 8000 to 44100. Making this
faster requires more CPU horsepower, and has no actual benefits,
because the sounds only contain 11 KHz data. Making this slower
degrades sound quality, but improves performance and saves memory.

How do you set the mouselook to always be on? And how to adjust the gamma?
It's way to dark. I'm running GLQuake.exe.

The GLQuake looks great, but I wish I had my old config. I think I had a right mouse click grenade launcher, left click regular weapon. And I had my name animated like crazy. Is there a resource for all the old quake commands? I've been looking around but not much any more. Bill M.

I d/led gamespy arcade and it seems to indicate that there may be some activity but very infrequently. No one was in a QW server when I booted in. For BelPowerSlave: I just edited my .bat file to boot quake into a 1280x1024 resolution and it worked fine on my PC. Bill M.

There was a great site called quakeworld.nu that had become the center of online Quake activity (mostly Euro-based, but not entirely). This was where you'd find out about the tournaments still taking place (again, mostly in Europe), there were forums, and they hosted, among other things, a great download for Quake called eQuake, which consisted of FuhQuake (definitely the dominant version of QuakeWorld these days), The All-Seeing Eye (the generally preferred alternative to GameSpy), some of the most common Quake levels for online play and many useful utilities. Unfortunately it is down at the moment after the server got hacked. There was talk a couple of months back about it being ready to come up again, but I think it got hacked again and will be a while before it's available again (if ever). :( eQuake is also available from ftp://ftp.yi.se/pub/software/equake/ George M. already posted a link to FuhQuake - if you want to play QuakeWorld online you should definitely be using FuhQuake. I think some of the competitions may actually require it. (You can also play single player with it.) OK, since I think this one is so important, here it is again: http://www.fuhquake.net/ But if you download eQuake, you won't need it separately. (BTW, I play FuhQuake with a very basic, standard QW appearance, rather than all the fancy new graphics.) There are also some forums at http://www.quakeworld.us/forum/ that may be helpful (including one devoted to Configs/Scripting) There's also one at Besmella-Quake: http://www.besmella-quake.com/forum/ Also check out http://qw.fragzone.se/ And for the latest demos (of various games), go to http://www.challenge-tv.com/ (QW demos are still the most popular, though most these days are actually .mvd - multi-view server-recorded demos playable on modern clients like FuhQuake, that allow you to switch between all views.) Well that should get you started on the modern world of Quake.

Um, hang on (this will be a bit of fun! ) )........ [still hangin on there?] OK, on both running systems, using GLQuake 0.97 (Quake 1.09), in 1280x1024-16 bpps (32bpp is not available in high resolutions evidently). Here's what I have done since the release of Quake Full version. I run the game, select New Game (you will be in the start room with shotgun and facing the 3 halls of difficulty levels), drop the console, type in TIMEREFRESH [enter], the view spins around, and here are the figures: The P4 got 244.126574 fps. The X2 got 754.654071 fps. Specs: P4= 478fc2 P4 3.0E (Prescott, 1m L2, 800fsb, HT), GA8-IPE1000-G (ICH5 chipset), 4 x 512meg PC3200 in dual channel, PNY GF4-Ti4600-128 w/nvidia 53.03 drivers, TB Santa Cruz, XP Pro SP2. X2= AMD Athlon 64 X2 4800+, ( E6,Toledo,90nm,L2-1MBx2, 2000mHz system bus), GA K8NS Ultra-939 (nForce3 Ultra chipset), 2 x 1gig PC3200 in dual channel, eVGA 6800GT (AGP8X) w/nvidia 77.77 drivers, onboard nVidia 8ch sound, XP Pro SP2. The fastest the P4 did even with the 6800GT was 247 fps, and I was kinda proud of that. Now, I have the X2 but haven't run Quake on it yet. I almost crapped myself a few minutes ago when I actually ran GLQuake for the first time on the X2. Over 750fps!!!!!!!!! :o))) LOL! WOW! Your TIMEREFRESH results should be fairly high also. Turn off VSYNC in the nvidia driver control panel. McG.

Unfortunately it's best vsync scan rate is 60Hz, but the flicker is not noticeable (unlike other monitors). Would editing the vsync still be positive and if so how? I don't see it in the control panel/display settings. The Sony can do 75Hz at 1024 and if the FPS cranks, I'd drop the resolution down to that, providing I can set the vsync to make that work. That's unbelievable. My AMD 64/6800GT ranged from 195-208 fps. I'll investigate the vsync but I think at this resolution I'm limited by the monitor. I installed eQuake. The GL looks awesome. There's a nice built-in multiplayer server utility, though it doesn't seem to indicate if anyone is in the target server or not. I think I also need a security file of some sort. After entering a server, setting my keys properly and playing around a bit, I exited and entered another, but the keys didn't stay put. I gather I need to make an autoexec.cfg file and load it up in a .bat file in order to keep the settings? Bill M.

Vsync is where the video card limits the actual framerate to the vertical scan rate. Or refresh rate. I think that's why your framerate is almost exactly 60 fps :) You simply disable VSYNC. Where the option is depends on which vintage of driver you're using. in 77.77 you go to Performance and Quality Settings tab. McG.

Ok, I just ran quake, got to the New Game start screen, dropped console, ran TIMEDEMO DEMO1 with vsync ON I got the same fps you did, with it OFF I got 568.0 FPS :) 1.7 secs to complete. McG.

Not too shabby. I had downloaded the new 81.87 beta drivers from nvidia.com, installed them, then tried to run GLQuake for a timedemo, but ... Quake crashed. I tried it three times, and it crashed at the same point. So beware the drivers. I currently am running the 61.77 drivers, so I'll hunt down the 77.77 drivers and try a timedemo then. Bill M.

I currently am running the 61.77 drivers, so I'll hunt down the > 77.77 drivers and try a timedemo then. > > Bill M. The new 80 series forceware drivers do some things no series before have done. There is now better support for dual core cpu's for instance. BUT, my main graphics application won't run. Not ANY version of it! Paint Shop Pro 7, 8, 9 and X will not display on the screen nor come up on the task bar. But task manager says the program is running. PSP cannot create/draw the window with the 80 series drivers so far. I may try that beta set you found, but sounds like it may have the same problem still. The WHQL 77.77 drivers are on nVidias site in Drivers. When you get to the current driver download page, look on the left for Driver Archive just above relevant links. >>From what i can see there, for XP the available versions are: 77.72, 77.77. 78.01, 81.85 with set 81.05 (the one I have that was a problem with PSP) missing in the archives. Hmm. The 81.nn drivers are supposed to be noticeably faster and clear up some little problems with some games. So I'd love for them to work with PSP also! Glad your timedemo came up so well! Running the entire demo in less than 2 seconds! LOL! McG.

Unfortunately the 81.xx drivers will likely never resolve the issue with old-school Quake (assuming it's a global, and not only local issue.) Do you have a bind where tapping the right mouse button loads and launches and then holsters a weapon? I had my right button bound to firing a rocket, then after the click, my "other" weapon would resume. That was a kick-ass bind, but I have no clue as to how to emulate it. Bill M.

Editing the vsync setting would certainly change your *timedemo* results in a positive way, but should have no visible or other effect on what you actually experience during gameplay.

That wouldn't be a simple bind. You'd have to use an 'alias' and script it, then bind the alias to a key. That is something that could be put in a .cfg, even the autoexec.cfg. I'll look into it as I have time. McG.

There are SOME games that may appear to have tearing of the textures, often with black lines in the torn looking edges. Enabling VSync will help that issue. However, the problem might turn up with my system and not yours with the same game. I'm glad your system is bullish enough to do Quake in high res without vsync :) BTW- GLQuake cannot do 32 bit color depth in any resolution higher than 800x600. But the game itself is 16 bit depth so just play it with 1280x1024-16 like I do. Looks pretty good, especially since the day when I was running at 320x240-16 and tweaking like crazy to get a couple more frames per second! Who back then would have though we'd be playing it maxed out in hundreds of frames per second?! LOL! McG.

Somewhere in the .pak files, there are loads of scripts. Some with aliases. There are also .cfg's that the dev team used. most of us learned of this one in the first few weeks that the "shareware demo" was out. By the time Quake Full version was released, lots of us already had our .cfg's the way we wanted em :) Looking... but I know I hadn't created any aliases myself. I will look for all the command and cvar lists I've collected. Ahhhhhhhhhh!!! lookee what i've found... QUAKE... There have been a few weekends where i'd get a very GOOD 28.8 connection and i'd watch the sun go down, then come up again while sitting right here at this very desk! I've even fallen asleep a couple times while playing Quake CTF online! So now, when *I* have the connection, the hardware.... nobody is playing it :( McG.

Also in a restaurant, there was a large fan ceiling and I thought, "I got chopped up in that the other day ... wait, that was Quake." I'm still going through Quake in solo mode, and still marveling at the nostalgia factor. But with Fuhquake down, and QuakeWorld (through GameSpy) pretty much non-existent, are there any dependable eQuake servers? The front-end launcher doesn't give much info as to which server is active, and those few that I've gone in (because of my solo play focus) have been inactive too. Bill M.

I'd love to see a few QW servers up. I still use a middle aged GameSpy3D. We might try the All Seeing Eye, and see what pops up there. I could set up a listen server if I knew I was to have company. I'd have to forward the ports and give someone the IP. Ah yes, and set up a map rotation and whatever other stuff I've forgotten over the years :) McG.
