I like doing these, dunno why ;)

1. Daikatana
Yawn. This game was supposed to be out 2 years ago, but
where is it?

2. Interstate '82
This game went through so many incarnations, I can't even
remember. The supposed "sequel" (add-on pack?), Interstate
'77, became Interstate '82. But the thing is, some sort of follow-
up was supposed to be released nearly two years ago too.

3. Flanker 2.0
I can't even remember when the first one came out!
All I remembered was that it was so old, it didn't even
have rudimentary shadings like Gouraud! Well, it's
1999, guys. The projected release date of Early 98
is way past already.

4. Reach for the Stars II
It's now being distributed by SSI. But wasn't it Microsoft
before? Anyhow, I thought it as supposed to be out
early 98?

5. Asheron's Call
Early 98 isn't here anymore, Microsoft.

6. Earthworm Jim 3-D
Wow, wasn't this supposed to be out Early 98?

7. Wizardry 8
It was tentatively scheduled for Summer 98. Now it
is tentatively scheduled for....nothing. In other words,
some time in way 2000.

8. (untitled)
It used to be called Deep Six with Virgin. Then
Swords & Sorcery with Westwood. Now, it's
not being published by anyone. It now doesn't
even have a name! Even though Mr. Bradley
assures us it's still coming out. Hmm....

9. Duke Nuken Forever
And it is definitely taking forever. Summer 98.
Gone. Way gone.

10. Ultima IX : Ascension
Funny, because in some old ads I saw when RPG was
considered unhip, the ad dropped the IX, and omitted
the words RPG. Now, the IX is back, and Role-
Playing is prominently displayed in the sentences.
Of course, follow the trend. Why create it?

Special mention : Messiah

I've seen those ads so many times.........ugh.

Somehow, sports, wargames, adventure and classics
gamers are spared from waiting for years like these
guys.

Didn't they start this one with the quake 1 engine? heh heh heh

I'd like to defend I 82. I don't have any specifics but i wouldn't consider
this one that "late". I76 came out. Later they released I 76 Nitro pack
which included new missions. And then they released I76 Arsenal which
included the original game, the 3d patch, and the nitro pack. Only later did
they announce I82 and to my knowledge it's right on track.

Unreal only came out summer 98. And DNF switched over the the unreal engine.
Were they actually considering being done the game and then decided to switch
to a whole new engine on the initial release date? gotta love it.

What ever happened to prey?

What about Prey, or has it already be cancelled?

Actually Flanker went gold on 10/4 and should be in stores in about a week.
As for the original release date, I thought it was supposed to be late 98
(read just in time for Xmas), so while it's a year late there were reasons
for example; an overly ambitious production/release schedule (good
intentions, but....), the developer is in Russia which combined with
language issues, communication issues (finding common times to meet/talk via
teleconferencing), hardware needing to catch up to the game, and of course
taking the time to get it right.

The '98 date came from Microsoft. Once SSI picked up the rights to publish
the game from Microsoft, the date was immediately pushed out to late '99.
But given the fact that there were some differences in editorial (expected
when a game switches publishers), additional time is needed/being taken to
make the game right, so it's been pushed out to Q1 2000.

By product of major business problems on Sirtechs publishing portion of the
business. I'm sure the date will become much more firm once a publishing
deal is final.

I actually did not know it just went gold, but it STILL
took a longggg time to make the dang game, nearly equal to
European Air War.

But it *was* originally due early 98,right?
So it's STILL late, regardless of the change in publishing.

I am well aware of the closure of Sir-Tech. However, the game was
supposedly due by Summer 98, when Sir-Tech was still very
alive and well. I am really looking forward to this title, if and
when SirTech Canada can find a publisher.

In fact, because its status is so mysterious, to me, it's cancelled.
So I didn't put it on my list.

T\rue, but that's because Bethesda was busy with other Elder Scrolls
games like Battlespire (ewww) and Redguard. The development
team only started to really work on the game after Redguard was
done.

Who cares? Daikatana is supposed to suck, by most accounts.

Besides, I'd rather support Bill Gates than John Romero -- what a
self-important blowhard. It's hard to take a geek seriously when he

And why Fabio, fer chrissakes??

Bu they never really came up with a release date.

And, compared to the other titles, it has been developed way
later. Duke Forever was supposedly already in development
when Duke 3D came out. Max Payne was still in the drawing
boards (figuratively) when it was publicized.

Well, the vaporware kings. In general there is a tendency that game
releases work better, some games get published right on schedule,
like System SHock 2, Dungeon Keeper 2, Age of Kings and so on.

THis game seems to have problems. I would like to see
it, but I doubt it will be soon and I doubt it will be good.
But there is now much competition on the RPG frontline,
Ultima 9, Diablos 2 and FF8 are soon to be on market.

Funny collection. But the developers will come into serious trouble,
because the share holders are not that patient than we.

Ah, you forgot about TES: Morrowwind, Deus Ex and some other name
from Ion Storm (name forgotten).

Umm where did you magically get this date? 3d realms has NEVER EVER said
anything about when the game is coming out. Not once has a date been

Just how stupid are you? 3DRealms has been working on this game for so long
that it has gone from a Quake I engine to a Quake II engine to the Unreal
engine.

It hasn't been delayed? I suggest you check your food and water for

No. I'm a big Duke fan and have been following DNF. They started using Quake
2 engine in early 1998. Switched to Unreal engine in June/July 1998 and
stated right then that the game won't be released before the end of 1998
because a lot of people were expecting Christmas release. DNF was expected
to be released in 1999, but 3D Realms never ever even hinted on the possible
release date. Don't know where end-of-1999 came from, probably NGs or gaming
magazines/sites. DNF will be out "When it's done".

However, between this and the game that seemed to disappear, Prey,
3DRealms hasn't released *anything* since that quasi-Ninja
game....what was it called?

And that's a LONG time

This is what my attorney suggested awhile back. He is away for
a week (extended labor day weekend) and I will be speaking with him
when he gets back.

Unfortunately for me, and I'm trusting you with this, it is one of
the degree mills (note the difference) listed in Dr Bear's book. *sigh*

It didn't matter to me at the time and little did I realize that it
would come back to haunt me. They (unfortunately, I'd rather not give
you the name at this point if you don't mind) operate in much the same
way that KWU operates here in the US which is why I had contacted KWU,
back in '96, hoping that they were accredited. Didn't it strike you as
odd that I was able to quote from the KWU brochure the other day on the
group? Thats cause I have it my hand. A few months ago, they sent me
another one and I even got to the point where they assigned an
enrolment person to me (Brenda Cochran, 800-635-2900) but I never went
ahead because I wasn't sure whether I was going to be in the same boat
and hence my pointing out the 'licensed' vs the 'accredited' issue on
the group. They even offered to give me credits but for $6000, I wanted
more which is why I started investigating the Universities in my
neighborhood and I have found one willing to give me credits for my
work and they have *assured* me that I get the degree within 18 months.
And they are accredited.

 >Now, where I'm headed with this is I sense that you may be 'attached'

I will consider this and I have already contacted Dr Bear about it.
And, ready for this, he thinks that I have *no* business even
responding to that nonsense and if what I make of my degree,
is my business as long as I have not broken any laws. Go figure.

That was not the case. I wasn't duped, accreditation just didn't
matter to me at the time, I just wanted to do the work without having
my studies affect my work and travels. I did it, on a whim because
the offer was there.

 >If you did a real degree program, of some kind, from a less than stellar
school, so be it.

Unfortunately, I didn't and this is why I've kept it secret all along.
How the hell was I to know that Huffman would be obssessed about it and
become a rabid dog.

Indeed

Yes, and that is what I have been striving to achieve. My attorneys
have always advised me that if I go to court, that based on what Huffman
has done over the years, that I *can* get him for libel because I did,
at the time, studied for and acquired a degree, albeit, a non-accredited
one via a DL institute, but nevertheless, a Ph.D. This is the only
reason that I have been pursuing it. So far, I have spent a ton of money
for experts in the field of libel and Internet crimes, that my attorneys
have consulted. This is what has slowed the process down. My attorney in
NY is my best friend and he won't lead me astray because he has no stakes
in this. This is not some issue of attorneys telling the wrong thing, so
that I spend money foolishly. He was the one who found the firm, he trusted,
in CA, to handle the matter. They were skeptical at first but as they
delved into the matter, they were convinced that Huffman can't be normal
and that even producing the sheepskin, won't do anything. He would just
change the site again, keep up and then continue to attack me for something
else, say, 'accademic fraud' etc. Thats the problem. Huffman, as others will
tell you, *cannot* be trusted and therefore only a decisive court decision
will get him off me. Further, the fact this whole thing started on NCR's
servers, brings them into the suit and I was advised that if I was awarded
damages, that NCR would also be held liable. Dan and others, *know* whats
going on back here and I can't say anything in open forum etc, so people
think I'm just bluffing. I'm not. These things just take time.

 >Also, I am not recommending that you run out this afternoon and

Noted. But remember, you are putting too much trust in Huffman.
Ed, I can be trusted, apart from my own shortcomings, I am and have
always been, a God fearing person. When I even told the world that
my degree was from a DL institute, I had no problems with that,
even though it was very embarassing for me. I was able to suck that
in and it didn't change my life in *any* shape or form.

I agree 100%

 >I bet you didn't expect preaching, huh?

nah, it's ok. I've learned a lot. The truth is, back when this was
all going on, I was a nobody Ed, I had a failed game, there were and
there are still those who are jealous of me. Even for the very fact
that I have the ability to continue to do high-profile deals and
progress in the face of failure ('96 that is) and it was just too much
for me to add this who Ph.D. issue to it. Now, my game has spoken for
my talent, I continue to make progress and in a way, I have succeeded
now where I seemingly failed in '96. The outcome of this, is irrelevant
to me and if my thesis didn't contain technology that I use in my game,
and which would cause me to lose the edge on my games (and probably make
my current and future publishers nervous) I would just put the damn thing
on my site and be done with it. In fact, this is why I agreed to have an
independent person, with no stakes and/or ties to the industry, look at
it. Further thats where the confidence that, even though I did it for a
degree mill, they would see and acknowledge that it was quality Ph.D.
material. Of course, the other side of the spectrum is who does the thesis
and technology belong to? I had a lengthy fight with the granting body,
and won. If I hadn't then I would have had to put that work in the public
domain or worse, pay them royalties on work, i.e, my game, that it was used
in. It is a very, very complex matter and thats why I have remained silent
and just taking all the potshots. It goes beyond Huffman, beyond pride etc.
My very future depends on the integrity and security of that work.

 >I''l talk to you later. I hope this helps in some way.

It does help and I have learned a lot. We'll see how it goes. You would be
best served contacting Huffman and perhaps you can find a way for him to
save face in all this, because I'm not particularly interested in giving
him a free ticket; not after all these years. I simply cannot do that
because
I would be the laughing stock from now until eternity. Look what I've
endured
for almost three years Ed. Think about that for a minute.

 >As always, any email will be kept private.

I know and thats why I trust you.

It's *way* down the road, I imagine. Duke Forever is their current
priority. I'm pretty sure they'll have to start from scratch on Prey
whenever DNF is released.

Speaking of 3dRealms games, where's Max Payne?

I think it'll definitely be the Quake killer when and if it ever comes
out. (Quake 1 that is, which was it's original intention).

I was wondering about that game last night! I have a magazine from 95 that

It's been public knowledge longer than that - 1996 was the first I heard of
it.

I'll take this a little off-topic... If you're the same Josey Wales I
played Tribes against a few nights ago (Diamond MM Base Beginners

It was released to the public in late august/early September, according to
an email I received from the ISP associated with the development company,
and according to some people I know who work on it. I haven't heard anything

I personally don't think any of those will come close to the
depth, playability, replayability and overall atmosphere
of Wizardry 8.

U9 is a quasi Zelda, Diablo has always bit the big one,
and FF8 is a long, drawn out cinema.

Wizardry 8, although mucho delayed, will rule!

I think David Bradley is a very good designer.
Sword & Sorcery will come out, and it'll prolly
be good. But my mind is hovering over two
particular RPGs: Wizardry 8 and that new Larian
project.

Unless the deveopers are privately owned, like Bethesda and Sir-Techm
no?

Morrowind has never been *delayed* it never said when it was gonna be
out. In fact, actual work only started after the TEs team finished
their
last TES adventure, Redguard (which was released NOV 98). So, actually,

Morrowing has only been worked upon for a year.

Expect it in 2001, IMO.

Deus Ex is HARDLY delayed! It's a rather newly announced game, in fact.

Or maybe you meant Anachronox? That did take its sweet time, but
Tom Hall has always stated a late 99 release, so it's actually on time.

That was a different Duke Nukem Forever. Originally THAT game was a
side scroller being developed by another company for 3Drealms. I
believe it was Gee Wiz, the developers of Halloween Harry. 3dreams
didn't like the progress and cancelled the game but reused the title.

Each time I see a picture of Johh Romero, I have the impression that its
an ad for a shampoo.

I actually went and looked at the Daikatana ( I dont care if its spelt wrong
btw) Web Site when I read this top ten. (Wanted to get some clues on how
long it was till release)

Well the Ego on the man is HUGE! I almost though it was a joke site!

I went to the news page, and it has a bunch of questions to John on it.
(Probably thrown up to convince Eidos he is actually doing something..)

But instead of TEXT answers it has a little picture of John with some sort
of smug look on his face. (Looking very much like a shampoo ad too, or maybe
he just has a small rodent in the vicinity of his nether regions..). You
have to click on the little Johnny head and endure a download of some
streaming audio files, so you can hear the GLORY that is John's voice and
the answer to the question.

Its not just Daikatana either, its JOHN ROMERO's Daikatana. You know, like
Tolstoy's War & Peace or Shakespeare's Hamlet. Must be to distinguish it
from all those other Daikatanas...

Of course I just said f*** this us soon as it started downloading the audio,
and surfed on. Great advertising guys, real great.

The belgian pie gang REALLY needs to pay a visit to Mr Romero, I mean
REALLY. If only for our health. Self - Important Blow Hard is very apt.

Shane

PS If it was a joke site, well done!

Under development.

It's developed by the Finnish company Remedy Entertainment,
and they're in agreement with the publisher 3DRealms that
"it will be out when it is ready."

And that game is nicely on its timetable as no release date
has been given. :-) Not that Take 2 wouldn't like to have
the game published right now but Remedy is nicely under
3DRealms/G.O.D cover so they can just ignore demands
and finish the game.

A little bit of column A, a little bit of column B. I find criminal
psychology very interesting :)
