Hi all! I'm experiencing serious performance problems with Zero Hour; when playing any game with more than 3 armies, the game just slows down to a crawl most of the time. I never had problems with Generals itself. My system is a Dell dimension 8300, 1024 MB RAM, Radeon 9800 Pro, DirectX 9.0a. It's a damn good system so there's no way it's too slow for this game. I've tried playing skirmishes and LAN games; always the same problem. Has anyone had any similar experience? Can anyone help? Thanks!

yes, I together with everyone else have experienced the same problems, since the blasted thing was released and EA has been aware of it since it released the crap onto the market. The only thing that you can do is to do not buy any more EA products until EA can demonstrate to the market (users), that they have addressed the performance issues, by removing the dictionary, addressing the issues associated with the online playing of the game, and fixing the user interface. It is just due to the state of the technology today. The same thing happened in the original red alert when it came out. The same for the warcraft games, and all other similar games. Granted some games cause a bigger hit than others. It is just something you have to deal with when the computer is trying to control 100's of units at a time, plus run the rest of the game and anything else the computer might be doing. Once the units start getting killed off, things will pick back up again. I am not sure how much it slows down single player, I will have to try that. I just know what happens when we play lan games with 2 of us against 5 or 6 ai. btw, don't pay any attention to the troll that has been posting nothing but bs in this forum ;o) -- Margolis http://www.agqx.org/faqs/AGQ2FAQ.htm http://www.agqx.org/faqs/AGQ3FAQ.htm http://www.agutng.org.uk/

OK ... so it's a technology issue ... what can we do about it? There are some Zero Hour games that flat out are worthless to play because the game comes to a near halt!!!! That's ridiculous! I've tried new display drivers, talked to tech support, reduced my resolution to minimum, reduced my detail to low ... nothing helps. It's a cool game, but if you can play it, it ain't worth shit! I agree this game is kool, so much that I no longer play WC3: FT. I had no prolem with ZH until EA released new patch. after the first patch, I had to reinstall entire games, generals and ZH, then I was able to play. after second patch, i was able to play the game, but it seems that it has slow down alot, especially on online gaming. it now runs at 3/4 of original speed i had when I didn't had to install new patch. this is not tech issue. because if I was able to play the game without slowing down or getting 'freeze' before in my computer, then there shouldn't be any problem even after new patches. this is an issue that can i address to poor quality managment by EA. althought i do not like WC3 as much as this game, becuase I like WAR games, not Battles games (hate that hero crap and 100 unit cap), this almost gives me no choice but to go back to WC3. EA tells us to challenge everything.....why don't they challenge themselves against superior stablity of Blizzard games? Not once I had problems with Blizzard games to complain about issues of performance of thier games. Nickermeister didn't specify if the performance problems have always been there, or just been happening since patching the game. On Zero Hour 1.0 I can play a solo skirmish against 7 computer controlled opponents on the Twilight Flame map with all detail settings to maximum and very few performance issues occur. After patching to 1.01 (and still in 1.02) I can't even play against one computer opponent without severe performance issues even with detail to custom with everything minimum making the game completely unplayable (<1 fps). I guess the performance issues did have a good side effect though. I'm no longer playing Zero Hour an hour a day on the Internet against a friend of mine! JJ

The AI tries to capture the oil tower, but all the AI dudes get bunched up in between the buildings and end up jigging back-and-forth which makes the game crawl (1fps maybe?) This used to be a big mystery, and I thought it was just the game and graphics, but I noticed this happening repeatedly on one board I made. I finally figured it out after sending a nuke mig out to toast a cloaked dude next to this oil tower. When the mig hit him, there were like 5 other dudes pasted on top of each other in that one spot. Instantly, the game speed increased to a playable level. I keep my buildings and oil towers farther apart now ;)

I experienced the same issue 1.02 made it worse (I now can't play 7 computers vs me). The game doesn't become unplayable on a state-of-the-art system! My little P4-M 1.7 Ghz becomes very unplayble... and don't even talk about my desktop 1.33 Ghz Athlon! Santa didn't bring me a new PC either, so I'll have to keep limping along a little longer until the next patch hopefully fixes it. JJ

This resolution I stumbled accross by comparing the files installed with Generals vs Zero Hour. It fixed this problem for me and It appears that my system config is very similar to all of those with the Nvidea gfource series or ATI9xxx series video cards. Locate the Options.ini file located inside "C:\Documents and Settings\(Current User)\My Documents\Command and Conquer Generals Zero Hour Data". Open this file with notepad. Locate these three lines and make them look just like these. If they do not exsist then add them to the end: ExtraAnimations = no FirewallBehavior = 1 SendDelay = yes The ExtraAnimations - fix the lag from happening when the game gets loaded with armys causing lots of lag and very choppy graphics in multiplayer skirmish not online Firewall and Senddelay both assisted in the lag time when playing online forcing the game to lose data sync and ending the game. Let me know if this works for you. - Fish "Margolis" <someone@somewhere.org> wrote in message news:<vudqrn5c4bij4b@corp.supernews.com>... > "nickermeister" <nik2oo1@yahoo.com> wrote in message > news:dea046c2.0312211448.4aa8ec1d@posting.google.com... > > Hi all! > > I'm experiencing serious performance problems with Zero Hour; when > > playing any game with more than 3 armies, the game just slows down to > > a crawl most of the time.
