I've read numerous messages lately on here, and none that I've read have had any concerns with modem issues for the second Quake game. Playing Quake on the net is a fun experience, but what about those one on one games? That is where the real skill is. I'd like to see id fix the modem code so that both players experience the same or NO lag at all... why can Duke3d, Descent 2, Warcraft 2 and a host of other games play with no noticeable lag and Quake cannot? If the game is undergoing some radical changes to it's architecture, that should be one of it's primary concerns. If it weren't for the modem play in Doom2 for example, I dont think there would be as big a following or desire for Quake today. That's what started it all. We know the guys at id are rich, driving extremely nice cars and such.. and I'm sure it's not a primary concern from what I can tell so far from the interviews of the people in direct contact with the game that modem play is a priority... but we all dont have T1's in our homes to get smooth games on the net of course if we were all rich we'd have them...... there are many out there that will only play on LAN's because of the amount of lag...now I dont want to get into why the internet is laggy for games and such, but I would just like id software to consider adding good modem code to the game for people out there that want a good smooth one on one game. -=Persecutor=-

Better connections will come with cheaper ISDN and cable modems and all of that hype. Why should they kill themselves programming for the least common denomenator when they can make the game so much better. I am not rich and I have an ISDN line. My gameplay is great. It helps that I have a decent ISP as well. I would never go back to playing with a modem because there are many better options now.

I second this. 1 on 1 is where the brain really gets a workout and lagless modemplay has been around for a long time since Quake. i don't know if you 2 have been playing on 2400's for the last year or what, but since the 9600's came out, modem play has been as smooth as it could be, and we're now playing at over 3 times that rate...what more do you want? If you want my advice, get a faster modem, obviously what you have can't be faster than a 4800.... --- >Gash< dsrt...@mho.net AbRaXuS wrote: > I second this. 1 on 1 is where the brain really gets a workout and > lagless > modemplay has been around for a long time since Quake. C'mon now, I know you can't be that stupid. I have a 28.8 and have
never once had a modem to modem game without problems. That's why
I don't play quake. The ONLY reason I don't play quake! Doom2 is
still, for my money, the funnest game out. I've only reinstalled quake
last
night because I thought by some off chance I may have better luck this
time. No dice....

Hi, I just started playing net quake, after nearly a year solo. I downloaded Qspy and QuakeWorld. The question I have is how can, in the Qspy list, I know which of the places runs via quakeworld; also, often I sit there for 10 minutes while all sorts of files download then I find out I can't even play at that site. What's that all about? Also, are there any other programs I should be running to improve performance of my system. I gotta pentium pro 200. Finally, can someone tell me just how QW makes it all so much better. Thanks --Adam

i play quake by modem and have little or no problems. i hook through win95 for ipx and then frag till your eyes bleed. but why play one person when you can play up to 32 people on the net get qspy at www.quakespy.com and it will make internet play fun with little or no lag with a 28.8 modem

What's that all about? If you haven't downloaded qw 1.64 you need to. Pay attention before you connect to a server to what kind of game is playing. There are games like CTF team fortress etc. which have different sounds, maps, progs, and skins that will start to download if you don't have them. You can turn off the skin download with qw 1.64. You can download ctf levels etc. at threewave. You should also download the skin files from http://qwcentral.com. so you won't have to wait for them to download or miss out on the art. >Also, are there any other programs I should be running to improve >performance of my system. I gotta pentium pro 200. You need to have fastvid if you have an older pentium pro. And get a VooDoo 3dfx card(monster 3-D) >Finally, can someone tell me just how QW makes it all so much better. Play regular quake over the net and you'll see.

But connect yourself to a LAN and you have the best multiplayer game around. So smooth with greater control and movement possibilies than anything else. Try a rocket jump in Doom2. he he. Buy yourself a network card and hook up with some locals who network Quake - You'll never go back :) Scott :)

A couple of them are labeled "id master" and "best.com". Push one of these buttons and any servers you see listed will be QW servers. You may have to choose "update this source" from the QSpy menu before you see any servers appear. >also, often I sit there for 10 minutes while >all sorts of files download then I find out I can't even play at that >site. What's that all about? Since you have played solo for so long, you prob know the id levels are named such as e1m1, e2m3, dm1, dm2 ect... Look at the game that is being played while in QSpy and if it doesn't say something like e1m2, dm2, ect... then you have to download an addon patch to play. If you see you are downloading skins, that is normal and shouldn't keep you from playing. >Also, are there any other programs I should be running to improve >performance of my system. I gotta pentium pro 200. Perhaps fastvid which increases your framerates, but you probably know about this one. >Finally, can someone tell me just how QW makes it all so much better. The main point of QW is that there is this thing called "pushlatency". This helps reduce the affects of lag and makes Quake playable over the net for modem users. Also, since most people who play on QW are lagged it makes for fairer games. There is also misc. stuff such as dynamic skins downoading, ect.. Its not gonna happe guys. There is just too much data to push from one end to another. what we are running into here is a lack of data transferr technology...mainly analog mode speeds. there are just too many polygons to be able to quickly re-represent the on both machines without faster hardware. the biggest reason Doom2, Decent, Duke3D, work so well is the graphical code is so much simpler. there is just less to move from one side to the other. Besides, your comparing it to technology that is at least 3 to 4 years old. At least be fair. Warcraft isnt even the same type of game and cant possibly be compare to a 3D fist person shooter such as Quake. If any of you guys are programmers....download the code for quake attatched to this document. Then find source for an older 3D game such as those mentioned above. youll find that they are drastically different and the quake source is quite a bit more advanced. I think id did the best they could with what they had considering the already massive delays with getting Quake on the shelves. Just my opinion... Quake Rocks!!, thanks JohnC :-) Lorne Torres <pe...@ix.netcom.com> wrote in article <01bc7b99$5af74ae0$5cd2b4cf@qb-pers>... > I've read numerous messages lately on here, and none that I've read have > had any concerns with modem issues for the second Quake game. This is so funny, I am the one who made the zip file that Persecutor attached to this message. It's interesting how that zip I made so long ago still gets some attention. I've never met Brian Hook, but he seems like a loud mouth asshole. That is, at least, my perception of him through his writing. I dunno, but he just seems to rub me the wrong way all the time with his cutsy cutdowns and insults. What exactly does Hook do? (Besides piss people like madness.unreal.org off.) >Yeah, there is :). Also, there is a lot of variability in internet play, and so it's not clear how effective it would be even if there was no cheating problem. Two player modem games should be different. First, the lag should be much more consistent, and so it should be relatively easy to figure out how lag to apply on the server. Second, cheating is much easier to avoid (don't play with people you don't trust) and detect. It's possible the code is organized in such a way that there is no good way to delay an internal packet for 100 ms. Assuming the server and local client are not in different threads, adding 100 ms of lag to the local client might add 100 ms to the remote client, too, which would not help much (it would help a little, 200 ms vs. 100 ms is better than 100 ms vs. 0 ms). --Tim Smith

I trhink tyhe thing is that he isn't used to all these bitching, whining lamers, when really he could release a shit game, they'd lap it up and then bitch some more cos it was crap. id cnanoty win, the way I see it - there is always some arrogant wank who has to have his say! (Yes, I'm depressed and un a bad mood :) Just because id has one of the closest to the public pr systems doesn't mean that you can bombard them with you shitty little petitions. FFS, if ytou're that desperate for modem play then use win95's dial up networking - it's not as if it's going to work in dos anyway, is it? Is iut that big a deal that you have to go through some point and click interfazce? Personally i'd never play modem cos it's crap. Play on an internet server where you're both at a disadvantage, it's much fairer! Just cos you can't be arsed to do something that'll take all of 5 minutes, you're trying to force id to do something that'll take a month or two, as well as having 2 completely different protocols to work with in one game, completely difgferewnt fucking engine, FFS! You really are a bunch of ungreatful sods, you know.. you take it for granted.. hehe.. i've just seen the groups this is posted for and I can imagine the amount of trash email I'll get from this *sigh* :) I've offended so many poeple today already.. I don't mean to seem arrogant or anything, but it really needed saying. I find that most regulars on these groups are relitivly pleasant, having been on and off for the past year or two, but there is a small minority that are extremely arrogant. -- Sadman's World - http://www.cisdk67.demon.co.uk/sadman Home of the Worms TC (for Quake) and others.. ... I think he just get's pissed becuase there's a lot of assholes out "there" attacking him and id because they are not doing exactly what said assholes want. I think that most poeple would get frustrated in a situation like that. >What exactly does Hook do? 3d hardware responsible.
