Quake IV Performance Question(s)

Hi,

Just built a new Athlon XP3000, ASUS A8N-SLi, 512Mb, 7800GT box to play
Quake IV which is great - 60fps at 1024x768 High detail (which is all my
flat screen will allow). The box is running W2KPro, by the way.

But....

The game stutters. To be specific: the game briefly slows (1-2 sec) to
<10 fps when I enter a new area of a map that contains monsters. Then
the game goes back to 60fps.

Is this normal - does this stuttering occur no matter what machine you have?

I've tried changing the following in Quake4Config.cfg:

seta image_useCache "1"
seta image_cacheMegs "256"
seta image_cacheMinK "16384"

This seemed to improve things a bit but the game still stutters. I've
also read conflicting descriptions - one says that these settings
influence the amount of RAM used by the game, the other suggests it's
the amount of swap file space used. Does anyone know the correct answer?

Is the cause of the stuttering down to insufficient memory?

If not, does anyone have any other suggestions?

I'd really appreciate any help.

Martin

The best help I could offer would be checking out

http://ucguides.savagehelp.com/Quake4/FPSConfigs.htm

and just using trial and error.

Try the lower quality configs and see if you can narrow it down to a specific setting.

It runs smooth on my computer, no stuttering or lag at all.

Athlon 64 X2 3800
Asus A8N SLI
1GB Corsair PC3200 Memory

I don't like telling people to spend more money, but I would add RAM if it
were me.

Thanks.

That document is the key document I used to tune performance. They
reckon image_useCache determines memory rather than swapfile.

I'm convinced that memory is my problem - I'll drop another 512Mb stick
in to see if it makes any difference.

I didn't even recognize you without the pF.
I'd defragment my hard drive before buying more RAM.

The symptoms you describe are almost always associated with swapping,
which means that you don't have quite enough memory. As areas are being
paged in, there's disk activity, which kills the framerate. Once
everything has stabilized, it runs smoothly.

Your biggest improvment may be another half gig of ram. There are folks
running Q4 with lesser CPU's and video cards that get fr's in the 40's to
50's steady, without the stutters. But they have a gig or more of ram.

Another 512Mb stick did the trick.

Ace!
