New patch, 'multiple' items deletion
#1402

Now, I know all the joy that most anti-cheaters feel (myself
included) when we hear of the new cheat prevention feature of the
new patch. However, when I read into the release note, I'm not
so sure if this patch is the best Blizzard could do.

Don't get me wrong, I think the fact that Blizzard took the time
to fix the cheat says a lot about its commitment to providing a
good game. BTW, I don't feel that Blizzard is necessarily
responsible for fixing the cheat. You can hardly fault car
makers for making cars that some criminals use for their escapes.

Anyway, back to the subject, my understanding of the dupe item
is that this involve the use of the town portal trick. Now, I
don't understand why Blizzard, given its intention to prevent
cheating, can't fix the town portal trick. Why does it have to
rely on this drop two identical objects and one of them is deleted?
What happen to unique items? Countless mages are carrying Dreamflange,
numerous rogues swear by their Eaglehorn or Windforce, all legiimately
acquired of course. Hell, the program has been known to generate
more than one unique items for a player who has already got the
unique item.

This reminds me of Bethesda's infamous fix of some of its bugs
by disallowing some of the actions that are causing the problem.
Luckily, Blizzard didn't choose to eliminate the use of town portal
just to avoid the dupe trick. From now on, we'll have to ask
around to see if anyone in our party has already dropped a similar
item, for fear that our hard earned trophy might vanish because
of this half-hearted attempt at preventing cheats.

While I applaud Blizzard for its attention to players' experience,
I cannot say the same thing with the way it handles the problem.
How unfortunate.

Since Diablo is not an ongoing game, you can't really have a "Unique" item
in the world. If you want that, then check out Ultima Online when it comes
out, it will do such things. (Imagine the fights over some of those items.
But, again, UO will have "police" monsters that will handle such things ;)
Still, this is a great game, and for them to come out with a patch this
soon, is even better. Hell, in there news post, they said the cheat thing
would be a different patch, if at all. but they incorporated it into this
one, great.

Welll... if diablo detects two items and deletes them they ARE
dupes. Diablo stores a multi-byte code with the item that serves a
couple purposes, one of which is to providea a unique code to each
item. If you find two uniques of the same name in the same level of
the same game, they will each be assigned different ID numbers. So,
the only way two items would have the same ID is if they were duped.
So if you find say .. an Obsidian Zodiac ring +20 all,+27% resist
all.. You can be fairly certain it will be safe if dropped in the
presense of a duped ring with the same stats.

I was playing tonight with the new patch and I had two ears from the
same person at different levels level 9 and level 11. I dropped both
ears in the Diablo version 1.02 and I got the message Duplicate item
detected and one of them was destroyed. These were not duped items,
so why did they trigger the duped items check?

(and by the way I'm not a Pkiller, the ears were from a friend who
died accidently from Nova triggered at shrine)

I dropped two potions of rejuvenation and one of them was deleted. They
were both bought at Pepin's. I thought it was weird.

Ok , I think I was wrong, the game generates a semi random number
each time you select "new game". It then meshes this with the various
stats of the item to get its ID. So then, two of the same items from
separate games should not trigger it. But if you find two items of the
same kind in the SAME game then Diablo will call them dupes.

I havent had that happen but I have heard it happen with other
items from the same game (like the ears above). I'm not sure how it
works. All my knowedge comes from debugging version 1.0..
Maybe Diablo doesn't perform the dupe check on certain items like
potions and gold? Ill experiment a little more with triggering dupe
checks in the near future :)

It does not do the dupe check for mana and health potions but it
does do it for the elixers. Only put one down at a time or you will be
throwing them away. I can see the need to stop some of the cheating
but it is not right that two ppl can't have the same item if they got it
legit.

game&quot;. &nbsp;It then meshes this with the various<br>&gt; &gt;&gt; =
stats of the item to get its ID. So then, two of the same items =
from<br>&gt; &gt;&gt; separate games should not trigger it. But if you =
find two items of the<br>&gt; &gt;&gt; same kind in the SAME game then =
Diablo will call them dupes.<br>&gt; &gt;&gt; <br>&gt; &gt;So what your =
telling me is if I drop 2 potions of full mana one will get<br>&gt; =
&gt;destroyed???<br>&gt; &gt;<br>&gt; &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;I havent had =
that happen but I have heard it happen with other<br>&gt; items from the =
same game (like the ears above). I'm not sure how it<br>&gt; works. All =
my knowedge comes from debugging version 1.0..<br>&gt; =
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Maybe Diablo doesn't perform the dupe check on certain =
items like<br>&gt; potions and gold? Ill experiment a little more with =
triggering dupe<br>&gt; checks in the near future :)<br>&gt; </p>

Arggh! Enough of the HTML. It is both pretty and pretty useless. Try
ASCII, it works for all.

More characters and such are the type of thing that any software company
that wants to stay in business would put in an expansion that people would
pay money for. Patches are designed to give the consumer what they paid
for. Expansions expand the game.

It ain't necessarily so! My mage had a book of elemental about his
person purchased from the witch. On entering a game he bought another
from the witch. One was destroyed as a dupe when they were put down!
