I FTP'd Apogee's new Wolfenstein-3D. I was really impressed with
the Stygian Abyss's texture-mapped 3D graphics, but Apogee could teach the
guys at Origin a thing or to. The graphics in W3D are a little more basic
than SA, but wow, are they fast. With a full screen window, W3D updates at
least twice as fast as SA set to a comparable detail level. If this
technology becomes common, we can expect a whole slew of texture-mapped
3D games. Flight sims may never be the same...

I have a 33/486 and the graphic speed for both is about the same. One thing I liked about 3dwolf was that the graphics when you got up real close still locked nice. On UUW when you get real close to something it gets blocky. G.Greene

Are we gonna have to go through this all over again? Are we going to have
to explain to this fellow as well that W3D's objects look the same from any
direction. Will we have to remind him that position in W3D is a 2-D plane
as opposed to UW's 3-dimensional graphics? Does he have to be told that UW has
to worry about lighting, and W3D does not? Do we need to instruct him on
the differences in time complexity between an algorith that has to consider
a 3-D position and an algorithm that only has to consider a 2-D position?
I sure hope not. We just went through this, and it was old the first time
through. ;)

But UW is much more complex than W3D. Notice in UW that your screen 'bounces' as
you walk, simulating real walking ? Or that UW has slopes, ramps, pits, etc ?
I like W3D, but its only a graphic upgrade. Still flat floors, square edges, etc.
UW FELT like a real place.
Now if they would concentrate on plot and storyline development.

But hey, ID did a great job with Wolf3D. Too bad it's a yawner of a game, and way too easy.

I don't know about a sequel on ibm. However, I know that there is an
arcade game put out by Microprose called B.O.T.S. and its a Mech Warrior type
game. Oh, yeah, there's also supposed to be a game coming out for IBM and
S-NES called Ultrabots, but it's been delayed since April and I don't know when
it's been rescheduled to come out. From what I've seen in the pictures,
Ultrabots looks like MechWarrior with 'Wing Commander' type scaling and
rotation of the Mechs.

There's a real difference between Mechwarrior and the Crescent Hawk games. MechWarrior is
an Arcade type game with a plot thrust upon it. Crescent Hawks Revenge is a tactical
simulation with a plot thrust upon it. Both are fun, but they are different styles.
MechWarrior simulates piloting various 'Mechs by giving you the pilots viewpoint. I
loved it, especially the STID (sensing the impending doom) button (TAB) which fired all
the weapons at once and pretty much overheated the puppy. The graphics were pretty
good and it required a (blazingly fast at the time) 386/25 to get any real performance.
I wish I could find my copy of Mechwarrior, I'd love to see how it runs on a 486/33.
Crescent Hawk's Revenge is not much of an arcarde game. It's an okay tactics game and the
graphics (3rd person omniscient) reflect that.
What I'd really like to see is the Battle Tech center in Chicago. Maybe if I have a
long layover one time....

Yeah, B.O.T.S. came to our local arcade last fall for about 3 weeks and then left. I
thought the graphics were very good, though some texture on the objects would have
helped. It was a real challenge also. I especially liked that enemies could attack
you from behind. You had to keep real alert.
I'm looking forward to trying UltraBots when (if) it hits the software shelves.

Speaking of MechWarrior, how do you solve it? I am in the huge map room at the
end, but I don't know what planets to identify. I lost the map. Can anyone help
me out? thanks

I have a strange problem with Wolfenstein: I am trying to use the joystick (port 1 or port 2) but I can only turn left. I have managed ONCE to configure it to turn right but I have lost the magic. I think I have selected port 2 but I cannot reproduce it. Any hint? I cannot remember the manufacturer of the interface. All I know is that I never had this problem before... Maybe you should try that? I'm using the gravis game pad. It says that I sould be able to use the pad's four buttons 1 for open, one for run, one for straif and one for fire. But when I go to configure it, all buttons either come up as button 0 or 1. When I started the game I saw a b3 and b4 but nothing since then. Any Ideas? Jacque jabu...@ualr.edu

This is like Crescent Hawks Inception which is side/top view of the terrain and mechs. More of a RPG than a mech simulator. I heard a rumor (either here or Genie) that Ultrabots IBM version was being held back so that its release would be the same as the SNES version. Hope this is not true...... Mark

I ran it on a 286/10 at my school (it doesn't work well on an XT, trust me) and
won it there. I thought the speed was quite acceptable. I got my 486/25 and
decided to try it there, but the game simply weirded out on me and died (I
could play for a couple seconds, but then the computer took control and locked
the system.).
Has anyone else gotten it to work on a 486?

No- I'm just guessing since it worked on a 286/10 and many, many 386's.

Oh, yeah, there's also supposed to be a game coming out for IBM and >S-NES called Ultrabots, but it's been delayed since April and I don't know when >it's been rescheduled to come out. From what I've seen in the pictures, >Ultrabots looks like MechWarrior with 'Wing Commander' type scaling and >rotation of the Mechs. Unfortunately, Data East has cashed it in on the PC games, so you won't see Ultrabots, or Battlefield 2000 from them. The developer, however, Novalogic, is still very interested in getting this title to PC users, so he's in negotiations with some large software vendors to get Ultrabots published. I have an interview with him at CES in Chicago, so I'll be sure to find out what gives. -- |-------------------------------------------------------------------| | | | Ross Erickson | Alice: Which road do I take? | | ro...@kaos.b23b.ingr.com | Cheshire Cat: Where are you going? | | 205-730-8907 - voice | Alice: I don't know. | | 205-730-6445 - fax | Cheshire Cat: Then any road will do. | | | |-------------------------------------------------------------------|
