People have posted suggestions for improvements to Doom, including the ability to jump, talk with other characters, look into a backpack, etc., "like Ultima Underworld 2." Listen up, dudes: DOOM is strictly an ACTION game. I guess you're having problems thinking that there's actually an action game on the PC, since 1 out of every 1.5 IBM game releases are mainly RPGs. You're trying to make the game into an RPG, and I DON'T WANT THAT TO HAPPEN. And I bet other people here don't want it, too. Besides the fact that I hate RPGs and don't know why in the world people can like such boring, "imaginative" (heh, yeah right people. Try picking up a book.), games that take a long time to conquer ( a complete waste of precious time, IMO), Doom is fine the way it is. Things such as the following will, among other things, hamper playability, remove the real-time action suspense element in Doom, and increase CPU overhead: Talking with characters... Who the hell (no pun intended) is gonna converse with some other characters in Doom? Oh, maybe some Wizard from one of your RPGs would show up in hell and trade some items with you? Completely ridiculous... Looking into your backup... Who the hell came up with this one? There's no goddamn time to look in your backpack! Isn't the amount of ammo left display enough? Jumping... Too much like UW and UW2. There are no terrible holes or abysses to jump across, so why do we need it? Sure, if the game required it, then it would be nice, but all of the levels are tailored in such a way that jumping isn't needed at all. Besides, this is not some ancient Stygian Abyss. There are high tech elevators that can get you to some interesting places high above.... Please ID, don't listen to this trash. Leave the RPGs for companies like Origin and let the game freaks look into their backpacks and talk with computer characters (get some human friends, guys?) for 40 hours straight. Bring in the ammo.... Stop these people who are trying to ruin Doom! -Tim

It's a little late now but if jumping was a feature back at the beginning I'm sure there would be parts where it would be required. Imagine having to jump across a 10 foot chasm, with the light dimming and eventually going pitch black as you fall into a hell-pit (if you missed the jump).

Ok, why tolerate others? How cool: what you hate is wrong. I can see the
errors in my ways, Mr Know-it-all. I will try to do some imaginative mass-
murder. I promise never to use my brain again for anything else than
applauding to such grand insights.

Of course, blood-spraying violence for 40 hours is *much* better. We all are
better off with shooting. Who likes talking? I and my friends, the weapons,
will master life together. All problems can be killed if the weapon is
large enough.
:-( (See me sadly shaking my head about why postings like Tim's are
nessesary)

My friend, you need some help. It's obvious that you cannot draw the line
between games and reality. Just because I like action/shooting/violent
games means I'm a person who shoots rather than talks to my friends, right?
An action game is not meant to be played for a long period of time, because
it will eventually get monotonous. I would not imagine playing Doom for
more than 3 hours straight. I play it, say, an hour at the most. An hour
well spent, I might add, immersed in fictional imagination and good fun.
But I never get into the game because it is mindless, yet fun. An RPG, on
the other hand, requires that a person gets into the game, and without doubt
requires longer hours. Now let me ask you: which is better, getting into an
RPG or getting into a book? I certainly hope it's the latter. Doom is
simply a time of leisure and relaxation for me (he, how our minds are
different! A relaxation for me, blood-spattering violence for
you). It has no effect whatsoever on my life. Now I'm not saying
that an RPG alters your life or something, but that may very well be true in
your case, at least. I've seen people whose RPG's have become part of their
life, honestly! Let me put it in simpler terms: Doom is to quick, satisfying
fun as RPGs are to slow hours immersed in fantasy in front of a CRT.
BTW, if you would summarized my original post, you would get the following:
a. I hate RPGs (a personal opinion I really don't feel the need to discuss)
b. I like action games (")
c. Doom is an action game, and should not be confused with Ultima Underworld
or other RPGs.
Oh, and thanks for your last comment...Really made my day...New on the
Internet, and it's nice to know that people here are so mature,
understanding, and unselfish, especially after I post one of my first
messages. I guess my posts are really not necessary, but yours are
certainly necessary. And what intelligence, I might add, to post an
anti-Doom/pro-RPG post in alt.games.DOOM, where my opinion is presumably the
opinion of 90% of people here. Later....

Indeed. But I would like to point out that your first post was the
best example of flame bait I have ever seen.
Flamebait: Expressing a strongly held opinion with a universally
excluding and uncompromising attitude.
Just because YOU dont like RPG's, or jumping, or pawing about in
your backpack while you get shot (I agree that is a dumb one :) doesnt mean
others might not get a kick out of it.
However here are some improvements to DOOM I would like to see :
Two guns at once: Imagine... chainsaw and gatling gun, BFG9000 and
the roket launcher.Heck add some new guns.
More Weapons: Of course. Everyone likes new toys to play with. If
the gun needs to be more powerful, add a smart gun ala Aliens fame. You
know, like the chain gun, but autoaims to the target. Vertical AND
horizontal... If it just needs to be neat, Flamethrower comes to mind. :)
Multiple backpacks: Come on, the guy isnt all that realistic as is,
carring as he does a roket launcher, a minigun, a shotgun a pistol, a
chainsaw, a pulse rifle, AND the BFG9000. So let em carry some 1000 or more
bullets. It will make Ultra-Violence that much more fun :) (Ultra-violence
is the only way to play :)
Now there are some improvements. Besides, DOOM really couldnt be
made into a RPG. The maps arnt big enough :)
