Nintendo should make a 9-11 game

If Nintendo wants to prove that Gamecube is for mature players, they should make
a game that lets players be the New York Fire Department and help people escape
before the World Trade Center collapses. Then it would let the player be other
fire departments, or any sort of rescuer, healer or builder in other crises. The
point of the game would be saving saving lives, and while it would portray
realistic death it would also penalize it. It would be realistically themed, but
it would be easy to pick up, like Wave Race or 1080 Snowboarding. It would be
extremely controversial, but it might get parental approval because it would
promote the "good guys" and not murder like Mortal Kombat or Perfect Dark. This
would be Miyamoto's Shindler's List, proving that he is a mature developer.

I think seeing recent victims dome in polygons would be tough for some
folks... I think a FPS in Afghanistan would be just wonderful. Hunt down

Erm ... you do realize that this tragedy wasn't just a TV show, and that
real people died, right? I suppose you think a Pearl Harbor or Hiroshima
bombing simulator would be fun as well? Grow the hell up.

The point being to make money out of tragedy. You really that insensitive
and dumb???
Do you want Nintendo to commit commercial suicide?

Even a Mario-dressed firefighter in Mushroompolis would be of very bad taste
at the moment or anytime! Dean, you've just sent a lingering chill in my
spine; there must be thousands of unique, unexploited ideas ripe for a visit
or too to our dear virtual worlds, but this one is way down the depressing
lane. Do players really crave the sight of blood at any price, in order to
classify a game as Mature? I'd say, even shooters as innocent as Perfect
Dark or Red Faction are utterly puerile, as far as I'm concerned. Actually,
you brought a good point by referring indirectly to a topic I've been
discussing a lot with 20-40 year-old gamers lately: the big challenge for
videogames makers now seems to rely in finding ways to keep adults' ludic
interest in bright, smart, positively innovative games instead of in
endlessly gloomy corridors of death. In the long run, those "games" really
drain the essence of life from your soul, leaving you an empty, bitter
husk.Grey and red tones, slimy textures, combined to obnoxious riffle or
screaming sounds are nothing but PC teen nerds' wet dreams.

Try again!

You really are stupid. Most people *now* don't want it, & can't you
understand 2 facts: the examples you gave happened 55+ years ago; the
Titanic was an accident, the others (conventional) warfare, not terrorist
acts on mostly civilians.

Because it's still very fresh in peoples' minds i.e. those that make the
purchasing decisions, but there will come a time with a new generation who
won't feel the same about it.

Guys, I think this jackass is just trying to get a rise out of you. I
mean, there's no doubt of his dumbassedness, as one reader put it, and
that he is simply a sick, sick humanoid-looking type blob of nothing.
But I think he's just going for the record for most immediate replies.
(Mine is connivingly meant for you guys and not "it" ["it" refering to
the blob that wrote the original msg])

No one's gonna grease the sqeaky wheel if they can't hear it.

sounds fun. yes, a pearl harbor simulator where you bomb pearl harbor
sounds fun but it would be too short unless you could conquer more
countries aswell.
any game where you can destroy america would be good for me.

Are you aware that there are families that have still not recovered their
loved ones? It's been close to seven months - the site is essentially
'cleaned up' - so-to-speak - and the number of victims that will never be
recovered is astounding. I think you need to come out here, and include
passing by the disaster site as part of your daily commute, before you start
making comments like this.

Yeah great Idea. How about a history oriented game where you trade,
whip, and rape slaves. How about a game where you HUNT THIS ASSHOLE
DOWN AND TEACH HIM SOME RESPECT! I personally like that latter of the
two.

Daniel, you've done much better than most of the people on this group by
understanding that murder is bad and rescue is good. Most gamers tell me that
games that promote murder are good while a game that promote saving lives are
bad, especially if they're realistic. Gee, that's the kind of sentiment we've
heard from Talibs. So that's who's been calling me stupid!

Let's compare 9/11 to the destruction of Europe in WWII.

In Europe, a survivor of WWII knew that his family would never be found, that
his city was totally destroyed and would not be rebuilt for years, and his
country about to be split into pieces, half of which would become communist
traps. And we have hundreds of video games in which the player takes the role
of a destroyer and killer in that war.

In 9/11, a survivor might have lost a family member, but knows that his body
will eventually be found. Only a few buildings were destroyed and will be
cleaned and rebuilt within a year or two. Yet there are jerks who suffered
nothing and called themselves "refugees". There are families who cry endlessly
because our culture considers it a priority to get attention. If there are any
video games about 9/11, they will star the firefighters, the life savers.

But I would like to visit ground zero and 9/11 did anger me. I won't soon
forgive Osama for lowering my nation's IQ by 20 points.

There is a healing process that takes place... Would you want to go out on
a date w/ your wife the day after she served you with divorce papers?

WwII took place 58 years ago - 9/11 took place 7 months ago. Why is there
such a hurry to relive this?

There are a multitude of families who will _not_ ever recover their loved
ones.. I'm not sure why you think that every single body will be found..
The total missing and dead is 2830.. Out of all of those people, only 155
are considered missing at this point. Of the remaining 2675 people, there
have been 1873 death certificates issued _without_ a recovered body.

As I said before, the disaster site has essentially been cleaned up - the
ramp down into the pit has been relocated, the battery tunnel has been
reopened to public traffic, and west street has also reopened. The number
of bodies that will be found between now and the "official" completion of
the cleanup effort is not many. I think it is clear that people do not know
that the bodies of their loved ones will eventually be found..

> Yet there are jerks who suffered

You are right. There are families who will behave like this, and jerks who
attempt to capitalize on the suffering of other, and people who kill other
people, and people who steal, etc. etc. that is precisely what makes this
irrelevant. There will always be people in all walks of life and in all
situations whose scruples have been severely warped. This, by the way, was
not something "invented" by our culture. It exists everywhere, in every
corner of the globe.

> If there are
> any
> video games about 9/11, they will star the firefighters, the life savers.

In the strictest sense, were one able to magically & completely disregard
the context of the situation, your thought is a positive one. But the
context is what invokes the practical meaning - without it, concepts don't
apply..

Let me put it this way - the last thing we need at this point is more stuff
to remind us of what happened, and what _is_ happening. There may be a time
down the road when something along those lines would incite enough of a
positive experience to outweigh the negative, but it isn't going to be for a
long time.

Can you bear the thought of the children of a lost firefighter playing a
videogame where they might possibly watch their parent die if they "lost the
game"?

No. We're calling you stupid because what makes a hero in real
life doesn't necessarily make for a worthwhile game.

	1) The event, from collision to collapse, took less than two hours
of real time. That's both too long for a casual gaming session and way
too short for a production game.

	2) Thousands of people died; no game could possibly allow you to
save _everyone_ without trivializing the real world event and the actual
rescue workers. In fact, the whole premise of the game as proposed sounds
like an exercise in second-guessing (and in the most asinine way) the
rescue attempts of the police and fire dept.

2.5) Obtaining victim likenesses would be ghoulish AND a legal
nightmare. Not using them would be callously rewriting history.

	3) Maybe it's a failure of my imagination, but I can't see how a
game can convey the sense that you're carrying a *ton* of safety gear,
climbing a scary number of stories *up*. For the gamer, he's going to be
moving via the control pad, and the sense of fatigue just won't be there.
Actually, it's more than just fatigue; if/when the player character (or
characters, if this is more like an RTS game) die, the sense of *death* is
simply not going to be there. Games let you continue all the time. Even
if this one didn't, you'd still have the option of pressing Reset and
taking another whack at it. There is no "this is our only chance"
feeling. Now, that may not have stopped Burning Rangers, but then again,
Burning Rangers was considerably more stylized than what you propose, AND
(much more importantly) was NOT attached to any real-life tragedy.

	4) The wounds are still fresh.  It's barely been a half a year;
the rubble from the WTC has not even been fully cleared away.

We shouldn't have to tell you this.

Dean seems to live on making bad suggestions. His court room trial game
where you play a defendent in a murder trial. He wanted Shenmue to
involve Ryo standing in front of tanks when he went to China etc. Stuff
that doens't really belong in games and cheapens the actual events that
he's so interested in living.

Sicko.

There is nothing conventional about it, which is why there are no "Sim

The USA appears to be quite capable of making enemies with their foreign

Oooh common. We had "carmageddon" with cars killing pedestrians a few years
back. Is it such a big step to "AirTerror" with planes hitting skyscrapers
in persuit by police in f16's and helicopters?

You guys might check out http://www.toworld.co.uk/ for a terror vs police
game. Very bloody with body parts flying around and stereo sounds. (By the
way this game is a free mod for unreal tournament.)

If your city has mutated freaks driving around splattering pedestrians, then
I suggest you move. Carmageddon is obviously fiction (and a lot of fun
imho), and I am sure that after 11/9 there won't be a lot of flightsims
which allow you to flatten sky scrapers.

...

Although I sure did have a lot of fun smashing airliners into flight towers
on my friends amiga a long long time ago (flying the actual missions was
just too damn hard). But I'm sure a lot of people did that, right? *ahem*

I am not a big fan of Unreal (simply not that interested, I'm sure it is a
nice game) but I'm sure they meant it good judging by the phrase "Assault on
Terror".

> Very bloody with body parts flying around

Ah well that's just for fun. I am sure lots of people really like sof 1 for
doing this. And it was also a lot of fun when some games introduced target
models which had specific parts you could hit. Shooting someone in the chest
is "okay" but shooting their groin all over the floor is just so much more
satifying.

Although taking out one's frustrations through gaming would be much more
desirable than real-world violence. ;)

Its funny, really.
I LOVE too see a game based or inspired by the 9/11
attack. If I could choose the game company to helm the
project it would be Konami's Hideo Kojima of Metal
Gear fame.

Those who opposed of the idea -- FUCK YOU!
Freedom of choice!

You sicken me. My girlfriend died in those attacks. She was just
sightseeing and had to die because some rock chucking sand monkeys wanted to
make some horrific point.

Like I give a shit about you, your girlfriend, and this fucked up country.
Its like I'm being punished in a previous life. I must be in hell.
Make the best of it, eh? :) Anyways, just like there's a game for racists
(Ethnic Cleansing) I'd like to see a game based off the 9/11 attacks.
If you don't like it -- FUCK OFF! Noone is making you to play it.
