Doom is DEAD

Finally: Doom is DEAD.

This weekend the TOP100 games chart, compiled by the readers
of the internet has declared the strategy game: UFO, Enemy Unknown
as the highest rated game above Doom. That means that the highly
celebrated "Doom" was the number one for only 28 weeks (compared to
Civilization which was number one for 44 weeks and is still number 3).

Soon, Doom will drop even further since it has only a limited
replay value for most people. It was a good game, but the best game
yet? Most people don't think so.
You may say that it is not fair to compare Doom to a strategy game,
which is generally more addictive and has much deeper gameplay.
But Doom has also an advantage: it is shareware and therefore more
accessible for voters.

Oooooooooooooooohhhhh!!!!!!!!!

Wow, those 262 people who responded to the survey are the sole determining
factor in the quality of a game. Clearly, because doom is not 'only' the
second highest rated game by these people, it is DEAD, and we should all
stop playing it.

Is there some compelling reason why this was posted to
comp.sys.ibm.pc.games.strategic? Are you a Civ fanatic aggravated
by the success of Doom? I fail to see the deeper purpose behind this

Technically Doom is the best yet. Replay value? I don't see people
setting up networks to play X-com... (can it even be played against a
human opponent?) As cool as strategy games are, I personally feel nothing
compares to the thrill of real time action! Was that message "flamebait"?

Actually, this is good news for Id (in one respect). They produced a great
game that alot of people purchased. Having addicted players doesn't bring
Id any additional income ($$$) which is what it's all about. Now Id has
to follow up with another great game and attract the Doom'ers to it (eg.
Quake). Since Doom eventually looses its appeal, that makes it more
likely that Quake will be a success, since their user-base isn't
satisfied with Doom anymore. I consider this news perfectly acceptable
and desirable by Id.

Dooms true advantage is it's initial attraction to users. This translates
into $$$ for Id. Anyone who has seen doom and wanted it has most likely
purchased their copy by now.

Id, IMHO, is well on the way to defining what a successful game development
company should be.

No, we were aggravated by people constantly telling us that Doom was the
end all/be all of all games. No matter what game, it HAD to be compared
to Doom. All games after Doom had to be a real time, 1st person, blood
caked on the walls, arcade game or it sucked. Not to mention that it was
hyped for nine+ months before it was released.

It amuses us to no end that a little known, turn based, game simular to
minture board games would de-thrown Doom so soon.

Strategy game????? Doom is more of a mayhem shoot 'em up.
Doom has excellent graphics and excellent realism, but certainly it has

How often do you use IDDQD ?

I'm not a hotshot player but I think it takes some little strategy
to survive the upper levels in -skill 4. I don't care how good
you are at shooting and ducking, without a plan, you aren't going
to survive.

I never played the deathmatch. Maybe that's a Shootem up no
strategy game, but regular play definitely takes a lot of strategy.

Pardon my french, gentle reader, but who the fuck is "us"? This is one
of the stupidest messages I've ever seen. No, not every game was
compared to DOOM. Although I've deleted it from my hard drive (because I
was playing it too much), DOOM remains the most impressive
(technology/graphics/environment-wise) entertainment product I've ever seen.

I second the notion that your post was utterly worthless. What's the point?

Maybe it was flamebait, but I'll respond anyway -

After about eight months of playing DOOM, I still get a thril when
I crank up that chainsaw on e1m1... And now with -fast mode... *evil
grin*
I like playing with DOOM. 400,000 percent kill ratio? All three
episodes with only using the rocket launcher? Beserk? Chainsaw? Doing
speed trials?
And maybe I have no life, but it's still fun to go through all
three episodes in normal play. (Nothing less than UV, of course.)

I think he meant _UFO_ is a strategy game. Nobody thinks Doom is a strategy

effort. Mind you, maybe Doom players are too busy playing deathmatch and

You guys are missing the original posters point: Doom isn't a stratagy game
so it has a hard time competing with them on an addiction level. Doom has
little replay ability without network and modem play (which is often
impossible to set up). There for it should be no surprise that doom is anable
to remain the most popular game when there are many games that are not
dependent on others for enjoyment. I play games most often when I not in the
mood or can't be doing things with my friends. Also none of my friends have
computers. Doom is still a great game, although there is tons of room for
improvement in storyline and moster variety, hopefully doom two will help.
By the way, if anyone is in the Bridgewater/Raynham/Brocton/Tauton area and
wants to play modem doom email me.

I can't vote for DOOM again.. You can only give 5 points to any one game,
out of 20 total that you have to vote with. Otherwise all my 20 would go
to DOOM. Each vote is used for 4 weeks. So each time I vote, I give
5 points to DOOM each week for 4 weeks. You can only vote for a game
4 times. So: for 4 months, I have voted for DOOM as high as I can.

Now, even though DOOM is my favorite game, I cannot vote for it.

Also, it is harder for the games to stay at the top, that it is for them
to get to the top. How many points did UFO beat DOOM by? I bet that
it will not last long, but I also think that the scoring system is
messed up.

Get the Games top 100 faq, and read up on it people...

I swear, the guy who started this thread was just looking for trouble.
Okay, genius, how many people actually voted on this thing? Two hundred?
Three? Many DOOM lovers are too busy playing DOOM to deal with petty stuff
like this. There's no need to rip the game, a lot of people like it. I
know quite a few people that still love the old C-64 game M.U.L.E. The game
doesn't sell anymore, does that make it dead? Cretin.

Oh no! The voting guy is going to be flooded! The moving of X-Com above
DOOM means that everybody will now vote, and the number of votes will

In my opinion, no game can stay at first position forever. DOOM has released
for over a half year, so it falls down is quite reasonable. UFO is also a
good game, but I think it will also fall down when another good game
released. Perhaps it is DOOM II. :)

Just for the record, there is NO chaingun in doom. The multiple barrel
weapon is NOT a chain gun. Chain guns do NOT have multiple barrells. The
gun in Doom is a multiple barrell autocannon.

I dont think so. I must say that doom is still the best so called
doom-like game, but it lacked depth of game, which UFO surely
offers. Most of adult people dont antwant just another mindless shoot-
em-up game. I think that DOOM shares will start heavily rise, but
thats for (I mean doom II) it nneeds some deeper gameplay, not only
if-it-moves, shoot it. I myself expect the whole world, where r
different people, allies, enemies and neutrals, some sort of rpg
style stuff and whole shitload of enemies to shoot down. I'd loved
shooting-around in Doom, but without strong background it starts
to be annoying. I grabbed doom from net as soon as it was released
and eventulaally finished it in UV-mode (have you even finished the
veryfirst episedeode with mere beretta only? in UV mode? I did it
thats why I say its possible). Then tryied Nightmare, but deathmatch
realled y gave new life to the fading doom, but now I'm looking for
something new (the wad stuff doesnt give THAT much to DooM). Now
I'm bored again *tap*. Cant wait something new. UFO is a really good
game, btw. I've spent hours, no days ... err weeks to kick some
major alien butt and ... well, its really done well. I mean game.
No surprise its hiited first place in list. List is quite good I think myse
I think myself I find only good games in first 10 places and thats
also mean something. If u dont care about the list, make your own
place all the first ten places full of doom and well .. you get one
damn objective list for yourself.

What the hell kind of fun is shooting monsters? Doom is as popular as it
is because of the multiplayer option. Otherwise, it'd be another wolf3d or
a "visual" MUD.

Yes, you're right. It's no big deal at all. But I fail to see why anyone
even brought this topic up in the first place... I mean, why not talk about
how much ammo a REAL rocket launcher could carry? What? You mean you

What? You mean a real BFG9000 doesn't really fire a green ball?

Right. All of us who are up to speed on our military-grade ordinance know
that a chaingun is a one-barrel machine gun that uses a chain driven by
an electric motor to pull the belted ammunition through the receiver. We
also know that the thing in doom is properly called a minigun. We also
know that even the smallest currently produced minigun is a 7.62mm beast
that weighs over 500 lbs. But, the guys who brought us Doom choose to
call it a chaingun. No big deal.

I'm not going to vote! How's that! Ya wanna know whyyyy? Because I couldn't
care less what some _stupid_ (to me) list says is the best game!!!!!
It means nothing to me! If I were to vote, I'd vote for Doom. But
I'won't, because if I let other people's opinion of games sway me, I'd
have never played Doom once! (whiney people who won't take responsibility

I have X-com, and yeah, it's pretty fun. I like it! I have Doom, and IT'S
GREAT! I LOVE IT!

X-Com does not support the following things that:
1. Doom does
2. I have
3. I USE

14.4 modem, 3 station ipx network, Roland Sound Canvas 55 MK II,
and most importantly: user created levels. X-Com _does_ support my Roland
MT-32, but that isn't as good as my SC.

Techno weenie? For $750.00, I WANT SC GENERAL MIDI SUPPORT!
AFTER BUYING MY NETWORK STUFF, I want it to supoprt my NETWORK! After
buying a 14.4 (soon to be 28.8) I want 14.4 modem support!!

So, I say _NOT_ techno weenie, but consumer who wants his
hardware supported!

Vote for important things! We who like Doom _know_ how great it is.
It's more important to let people know about the game than it is to vote
for someone's list.

There seems to be some confusion between "strategy" and "tactics" here.
I'll fully agree that DOOM is not just a mindless shoot-'em-up, but the
decisions the player must make (especially at difficulty 3 & 4... only
psychos play 5... it's a joke, okay?) i.e., do I dodge and sprint across
the room or hole up in a corner?, do I take out the Caco with the RL and
the Imps with the chaingun, or vice versa?, are tactical ones, rather
than strategic ones.
That said, let me be the first to express the belief that the
previous paragraph was a classic case of "pickin' gnat-shit out of
pepper." Doubtless, there are those who sneer at tactical games and love
strategically oriented ones, and vice versa, just for the sake of
principal, but I would guess that most people feel that one is not really
intrinsically superior to the other.
I would also guess that most people would not equate "number two"
with "dead", either.

*sigh* its candy money .. havent seens such kind of numbers before,
huh? Look, when you deal with game industry then you should know that
people really going to love it then it goes to like $16 mil. Seems
that they dont. DooM is mean for people whose fingers and eye-finger
coordination is much stronger than their brainwork. Most of strategy
games are vv. I must admit that I download doom, and got hooked
eventually, but deleted it after week, because it really didnt gave
me something really new. It became repetitive and frustating.
Dont tell me rubbish about cheat keys and uv. Yes I ended the game with
uv mode on, I didn't use he cheat keys AND I ENDED FIRST EPISODE WITH
GUN ONLY (those two big bozos in end as well). I smashed everyone
in deathmatch too. Its eveore even moree boring, because there is
only four mean enemies. I think three players again on (and they should
cooperate with monsters .. :)) will make me try it for one more wekk.
Anyway, the people whos IQ is higher than average want their
"hardware" supported as well - like researchers, programmer, etc.
I have big expectations on QUAKE. I hope it more andventure than
just shooting around game. I expect whole shitload of enemies, guns
armours, hi-tech eq, drugs, potions, maps, hints. I also expect
neutral or even friendly chars you must protect and who'll give
you vital clues about strotu story and who may even cooperate with u.
And I open it will be open game as well, so when I end some adventure
I can eventually download new from some ftp site and get hooked again.

Thanks. A warm flame always makes you feel a bit more comfy.

Well, about books, havent found ANY good books lately. The last one
I readed was something from Poe (some kind of novels collection).
I also love tolkien and Douglas, Kafka is OK, too, but most of paper
backbooks I see on stores just make me yawn. ALTHOUGH I love
uinteractive storyplots - I was very hooked with Star Control II to
find out what was all the stuff with those Ur_Quan masters AND I
had tio be sort of creative and at least try to make something, because
it was kinda harder to just turn the page of book. Btw, why I added this

quickly people descent ionto personal level do defend their beliefs,
AT least people are now falming me instead of blabbing about doom over

Okay, okay, peace, I will declare a truce if you will. I never meant to
get involved in a flame war here, so lets just end it here and now.

I will willingly apologize to the original poster and to all that I
have offended with my reply. So, I apologize for my rude reply.

I am a man of peace and not one to be rude or insulting. I guess I got a
little carried away with my reply. My message is one of hope and
joy to all, so I apologize and freely admit I went to far.

Yes, I took offense to being called boring but, hey, I really like
DOOM, but thats not all I really like. I have many and veried interests
and my girlfriend does not think I am boring. So let me rephrase my
reply:

Just because I like DOOM does not mean that I am boring. Having
a passion for something does not make me uninteresting either.
So before you judge me, please take the time to get to know me
even if its only over the internet.

Have fun. Thats whats lifes supposed to be really all about anyway.........

Hmmmm.
Lets' examine this closely.

  	STATEMENT = Doom is DEAD

Hottest Game (in Sales) == Doom
Best Virtual Reality Game Yet == Doom
Best Action Graphics Lately == Doom
Most Fun Activity Yet == Sex (Well, stats don't lie)

Our stastical analysis of the statement, "Doom is DEAD", cannot be verified
(or Hell, even considered reasonable), using our universally-accepted
Hypothsis Evaluation Techniques (and/or waking up).

Results: STATEMENT = FALSE
Probability of Error = 0.00000000000000000000000000000000000%

CERTIFICATION: Certified by Universal Analysis Systems (UAnal)

P.S.
When presented with the STATEMENT for analysis all respondents replied the
equivalent of:
"Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha.
Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahhahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha.
(Insert one word from list 1, one from list 2)! Where's my chainsaw!"

List 1 List 2

Actually this comment is actually the type of comment that makes me realize,
"So who cares if Doom is #1?", "If we all vote for Clinton he'll be president,
Oh he is?? OK sorry." ;-) So what is a "poll" anyway? Just another statistical
thing you can shove in someones face and say "I told you so!" ;-) Who cares?

Ya know, once Tie Fighter beats both DOOM and X-COM for the #1 spot on the
top 100, this whole thread is just going to get so much worse. I just wish
FPS:Baseball and Jazz Jackrabbit would hurry up and get here...
