TIE Fighter in 3-D?!?!

Just visited the LucasArts web page and read the press release about
the X-Wing collection.

I am drooling in anticipation.

X-Wing and TIE Fighter optimized for Windoze 95 and supporting 3-D
acceleration? The mind reels.

Can't wait for this one. Now only if LA can release something on time
for a change...

May the gaming Force be with you...

They already have a 3D patch for XvT, but I guess this new version is using
a completely new game engine.

Did you play Wing Commander Prophecy yet? If not GET IT. I have a P166 and
3Dfx Voodoo Graphics card and it ran silky smooth, but the graphics, don't
get me started. They are sooooo realistic, it scared me a few times when I
had a pair of Alien fighters on my tail. Excellent game- You should try it
while you wait for the new XVT. Story is awesome as well. Anyhoo, give it a
try if you haven't already.

Yeah, I downloaded and installed the patch for XvT, but I'm just
exicted about a new 3-D engine for good ol' X-Wing or TIE Fighter.

I'm very anxious to see the results.

The only misgivings I have are:

1. I already own X-Wing CD, TIE Fighter CD, and XvT.
2. Besides the engines, what else will be new? Anything?

Although I must confess that I've never been able to get either game
to work quite right under Windoze 95. Had another version of DOS on
my old computer that worked just fine for those older games, but I
haven't bothered with my new computer yet. Hopefully they will have
tweaked both games to work in a Win95 environment without any
problems.

Yeah, right.

May the gaming Force be with you...

Just finished it tonight. AWESOME game. To be honest, it is the
first WC game I've ever played.

I'm running a PII 266 with a Riva 128 and it is GORGEOUS. Once you've
gone 3D accelerated, you'll never go back. There is just no
comparison.

You should try some of the others. :) You can get WC1-3 in Kilrathi
Saga at http://www.videoserve.com or http://www.justcds.co.uk WC4
should be available in Classics edition soon. There are also a number
of other WC games besides the main line.

   It'll look even better on a 3dfx card. :)

Try playing it with a 3Dfx card... Sure, in some cases the Riva does
better than Voodoo, but the fogging and lens flare are only available
on 3Dfx systems, and are totally awesome. If the graphics were any
more realistic, and you'd need to actually be flying in the real
thing. :)

(besides, us "poor folks" running non-P2 systems don't have CPU
firepower to spare for the Riva. :) )

Death, happily running with a P-166/Monster3D system :)

We'll get more action when Origin releases its add-on for WCP this
June. :) You might want to consider playing some of the older WC games
too, especially WC4.

Add-ons? Cool!

Any suggestions on where to get WC4 or other such older games?

You can get WC1-3 in Kilrathi Saga at http://www.videoserve.com or
http://www.justcds.co.uk WC4 should be available in Classics edition
soon. You can try searching game retail sites for 'wing commander' or
'privateer' to see some of the other ones. We should be hearing more
information about the WCP addon soon.

Heh... some people over in alt.games.wing-commander (a few of which
post here as well, like moi) have multiple releases (including EA
Classics versions, floppy versions, CD versions, and the Win95-native
versions of WC1-3 in Kilrathi Saga) of each WC game. :)

Death, who is one of those with multiple versions of the games :)

Supposedly not, as far as gameplay is concerned. There is an entire
generation of gamers (a generation being about two years in this
field) that have never played these games. IMO, the only thing
outdated about them is their 3D graphics engines (and I actually
prefer the 640x480 version of TIE to the texture-mapped XvT, but
that's just me).

These new players are the target audience for the re-issue, seems to
me. No reason to change what are already two of the best-designed
single-player games ever made.

They will be Win95 native.

I confess without embarassment that I will buy the reissue just for
the opportunity to play the games again, although I will wait until I
see a favorable price. I could re-install my old copies, but I just
don't feel like messing with DOS any more.

I prefer TIE to XvT as well, but that's mostly based on the fact that
it's a better game. :)

I think the key word here is "single-player." LA was so focused on
the whole "multi-player" thing in XvT that the single-player
experience was neglected.

That's good. I hope they include support for 3D sound as well. :)

WC4 is already available on EA's Classic imprint in the UK (as is WC3
Aand Privateer 2).

Isn't Lucasarts just using an enhanced XvT engine for X-Wing and TIE
Fighter? If so then it should work fine in Win95. I hope that they
update the cutscenes in the games to the level of the ones in Rebellion.
The ships in those scenes look close to the quality of the movies.

I hope they put an enhanced XvT engine.

XvT 3DFX patch is good, but does not make use of all 3DFX
effects. If they can make 3DFX explostions with X/W and T/F they
should really be great. The title would be fantastic... Loads and
loads of missions in a single title.
