I've had this game for quite a while, but the near vertical learning curve and confusing interface has always kept me from getting into it. Now I'm trying again. After struggling through the first couple of missions I'm starting to see what some of the appeal is. I"ve finished Freelancer and have a couple of years in EVE and can see a lot of similarities in X3, but am a bit frustrated looking for features that I liked in those games and can't find in X3. I've patched to version 2.0.02 and added a mod to enable the old X2 cockpits. I've done the first 2 missions and have a few questions: 1. Mouse control. I"ve tried the joystick and the mouse to fly and I prefer the mouse by a large margin. I recently discovered that you can double click in space to head in that direction. (just like in EVE) What I can't find is any way to move the camera around with the mouse. Is there a button I've missed or a mod to give me a mouselook function? A padlock view would be nice too. :^) Also, when I fly the Buster with a mouse it seems a bit twitchy like it's TOO sensitive to the input. Is there a mouse filter like you see in some FPS games? Or is the only solution to fly bigger ships? 2. Is there supposed to be some sort of an animation when you jump between sectors. I used to like how Freelancer hid the transition between systems and it would be nice to see something other than a black screen. I saw something about that in the manual, but once I'm in the game the ONLY graphic option I have is ACQ on or off. 3. What's the recommended cockpit mod? I'm using one that brings back the X2 cockpits, and they look good, but you can easily tell that they're not the right ones for the ships. (windows are the wrong shape and location, ect. I've also tried one that added new cockpits that have the correct shape, but they don't look as nice. (too bright, low res textures, ect) There's a billion people making cockpits for MS Flightsim. There must be at least ONE nice mod for X3. 4. Making money. What's the best way to make cash in the early game? So far I've been doing cargo runs in the mercury you start with. It's pretty low profit stuff though and a lot of the time, by the time I get to the station with the good deals, someone else has already bought all the stock or filled the demand and prices have gone back to normal. I've been using satellites to watch prices in other sectors, but it still seems pretty slow making money. :^( Any advice from more advanced players would be appreciated. There were animations early in the game's development (a la X2's jumps), but were inexplicably scrapped and torn from the game. > 4. Making money. What's the best way to make cash in the early game? I've heard that a great way is to set up an automatic trade route through favorable space, set your SETA to 10x, and let the game run overnight with SETA engaged. Huzzah, you've just done 80 hours worth of trading, and should be up to your eyeballs in cash. TheSmokingGnu

I have been tempted a couple of times in the past but have resisted knowing just how unimpressed with all of the last games in the series. And now with them scrapping cockpits etc just seems the franchise is actually going downhill! Ive never heard of such a thing before in that later incarnations of a game have actually had more stripped out than previous ones. Ive heard of plenty of remakes losing the gameplay of the original classic game though such as XCOM, Gunship 2000, Railway Tycoon, Pirates etc etc but never as a strict evolution of a game. This must be a first in history where we can actually see in real time the evolution of the gaming industry in general and certainly reflects how games are actually getting better graphically but worse in terms of playability. Its something Ive obviously experienced many times but it will be interesting to see how the X franchise changes over the next ten years acssuming there is another one! I suppose the younger generation are to blame here in that they equate good graphics to a good game and they have parents willing to buy them this rubbish and not knowing any better. Its just as well there are a few developers who know better. Silent Hunter 4 due out in a week is a perfect example of a great game lately that hast sacrificed any gameplay and has in fact improved on the original by a long shot. I cant think of any other games that have done this myself.

Is there a mouse filter like you see > in some FPS games? Or is the only solution to fly bigger ships? ---8<--- I play with joy-stick, leaving the mouse free for menu control. I often do both at the same time: I can spend a looong time in the menus checking my traders and don't want to waste time sitting docked or floating in space. Full-power thru a system but keep an eye out for 'roids, etc. and dodge around 'em while I'm doing other tasks. Try hitting F1. F1 = switch mode, F2 = external, F3 = target. I'm pretty sure they each steps-thru the various modes they show, eg. front/back/cockpit Mouse sensitivity? I don't think so... but if you can, it'll be in the in-game options. ie. while docked or flying, hit ENTER and select right-most icon. > 2. It's > pretty low profit stuff though and a lot of the time, by the time I ---8<--- It's a hard slog early on, innit? But what's to say, except the obvious: - Build up rep and get the Police Licenses ASAP. Then you get an income for every pirate (or racial foe) you finish off in the relevant sector. Only minor income, I know, but every little bit helps. - Don't bother repairing capped ships unless they're a major improvement on what you have, just sell 'em and invest the $ elsewhere... bigger cargo holds, deal in higher profit wares, improve yer ship and start some small automated traders running. - Early on, map your way south to Emperor's Edge and set up a small freighter with Jump Drive, 25MJ Shields, Trade Command SW Mk3, etc and get a Sector Trader running there to gain experience. Other sectors work, but nowhere else works as quickly. ;) Once they get up to Lvl 10, convert 'em to a Universal Trader and set up a replacement Sector Trader. Although you can generate a lot more income at a given time by manual trading, UT's are where the slow, steady stream of income comes in while you go do other, more fun things. I aim for a minimum of around 25 of 'em... and can afford anything I want, knowing that the funds'll recover quickly without me worrying too much. :D
