SKYRIM - horse wanders off when I dismount

As the title. It is my avatar's horse and not a stolen one. This has only
started to happen since I installed Dawnguard. Also for some strange reason
my horse is now brown and not brown and white when I purchased it. I
repeat - it still is my avatar's horse. I will take some time to follow it
to see where it does eventually end up, if anywhere. Guess it's going to be
a long walk :)

Couldn't find anything on the web about this

It seems clear that the game considers this a 'stolen' horse.
Perhaps go back through the Games Saves to see where it started
happening like this.
If you start with Dawnguard NOT loaded how does it behave ?

They will run away if they get attacked by mobs. I've had this happen to
me (no expansions) or when I got too far away from the horse.
If you fast travel to any town or village on the map, the horse should
be there, waiting for you, provided it is YOUR horse (as you stated).

Still a pita but better than loosing it entirely.

Although I don't know the whys and wherefores of this sudden change in
behavior, you can try to rectify it by installing the "Convenient
Horses" mod http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/14950

Not only can you set your horse to "wait" or "follow", it also gives
you added bonuses such as a horn or whistle to summon the animal, an
inventory for your horse, the ability for followers to ride horses,
and a variety of horse armors. Plus, you can make your horse
invulnerable, which is almost a necessity at higher levels, when a
bandit is sporting such powerful weaponry that he can kill the beast
in a single swipe...

Nope, doesn't run away. Just wanders off when I dismount. Until lately I've
always found my horse even after attacks. I followed it for an hour. It
doesn't stop anywhere, just keeps going along roads past towns etc. Got a
bit bored with this, so I fast travelled to a city; my horse not there. I
brought another horse. Went on a quest and passed my original horse miles
away, just trotting along, I dismounted my new horse (which managed to stand
still) and mounted my old steed. Went a few yards and dismounted and yep, it
just carried on trotting away. So far my new mount is behaving himself :)

Well at least that's entertaining.

Down at that extreme far south east exit from the gameworld
(where Dawngaurd should be) there is a roadway
leading to an impressive arch which is a World Map edge .

There I was attacked by a fierce very aggressive female warrior
who just came at Hero with no provocation.
Leaving no choice but to kill her.
Her horse was just standing nearby so Hero (being a Humane caring
sort when circumstances allow) rode it so as to give it a new owner
but whenever dismounted it wanders off back to that same spot
& just stands there,

Yes I've been there. Don't you just hate invisible barriers? Rather have an
impassable rock face or similar. I didn't come across the warrior there
though. I'll check it out another time, maybe I'll get lucky and she'll be
unlucky :) Being level 55 I'm not finding anything that can kill me now,
maybe I'll have to change the level I'm on.

I suspect that warrior is one of the games Randomly generated elements.
She was entirely on her own with no connection to any event.

Tho its sounds as though that horse in your game has a bug.

Yes I hate the 'sudden' can't go that way invisible walls .
Shows a lack of imagination from the designers.
That far South-East arch is so distinctive that I suspect it was the
original
planned entrance for Dawngaurd which logically should be
visible beyond it to the east but is not.

Its possible to go past that gate into the landscape beyond with the correct
Console Commands. Just sort of big & empty landscape.

I'm going to try to swim from the very far North East to see if its possible
to get to
Dragonborns Solstheim that way.
I did that in Morrowind as a useful way to build up an extra level or two.
There we could swim & swim & etc. indefinitely with the Day/Night cycle &
varying Water Creatures . I don't think Morrowind has any invisible walls.

IMO the Elder Scrolls games have always been mean & illogical re. theft .
If our Hero is attacked then we should be 'allowed' to keep the
property of the attacker AND there horse as ours.

Ah, I have had that happen once with the stray unowned horse on the road
to the Greybeards. You're supposed to be able to take ownership of it by
mounting it, but it always behaved exactly as you describe, just ambles
off the moment you hit the ground.

I have only seen that happen with one character.

Some flag not happening, or getting corrupted maybe ...

No they haven't.

That started with Morrowind, where if you stole, for instance a Soul
Gem, completely undetected, not only did someone on the other side of
the island (or in the 2 addons) instantly know it was stolen, all soul
gems of that type became flagged as stolen.

However in Daggerfall you could steal to your heart's content and easily
sell the stuff.
I looted entire shops at night (required the cart), then waited until
morning and sold the contents back to the shop owner in Daggerfall.

Of course if you got _caught_ stealing or attacking or picking a lock
the guards would swarm on you like you'd just kicked over a Guard-hive.

Pretty sure it was like that in Arena as well, but it's been so long
since I've played that I can't say for sure.

Morrowind is where the unrealistic morality/property rights got bolted
onto the game.

Maybe it's as simple as "yeah you were attacked and defended yourself,
but that doesn't make your attacker's gear and horse yours, it belongs
to his/her heirs now."
But that relative moralism belongs in Ultima, not the Elder Scrolls.
Your and my attitude is simply "she attacked me, she dies, all her stuff
is mine now as a penalty for her unwarranted attack."

If they wanted to do this kind of thing properly, they make things like
horses of randomly spawned warriors recognized as that warrior's by a
few NPCs in the game - the guy who sold it to her, her friends, etc.
They and they alone would recognize that the horse was "stolen".

Ever wonder if this kind of idiotic stuff is a kind of DRM brainwashing
trial?
It can't be come yours because you took it or found it or got it by
killing someone who attacked you, only if it was sold to you.
A subtle little bit of "property rights" propaganda.

No, it was simply a way of keeping the amount of programming necessary
down to somewhere in the neighborhood of what there was time and money
for. The constant addition and tinkering with features like this is one
of the things that keeps a lot of vanity game projects from ever being
finished.

How do you figure that?

It's MORE programming than was involved in Daggerfall and before where
items were NOT flagged as stolen.
You try to steal and get caught by the guards, they take it back and
fine you/jail you.
If you got away with the theft there was no way to tell it was stolen,
unlike in Morrowind on when the entire world can tell at a glance that
it's stolen.

The Elder Scrolls aren't vanity games so that's a bogus comparison and
they generally aren't rushed out the door. The Parent company lets them
finish the game before it's released and doesn't really consider or care
what other companies are doing (then again there really isn't anyone
else making game like the Elder Scrolls series anymore.)

The point I was making about the subtle little bit of "property rights"
propaganda is that the early games were realistic in that if you got
away with the theft, the stuff was yours.
You might get caught stealing it, but still manage to get away from the
guards. You couldn't sell it to the guy you stole it from generally,
but someone in another town or city, no problem.

But Morrowind on, anything but BUYING an item flagged it as stolen and
also glitch flagged (I'm assuming it's a glitch) everything else of that
type as stolen goods too. And EVERYONE in the game world knew instantly
that it was stolen - and that's just bullshit.

Totally unrealistic, but not really that far out from the way the DRM
folks seem to think of "inalienable property rights" - you buy from them
and they'll let you use it for a while - you can't steal it, or borrow
it, or buy it second hand or anything else and be counted as a "legit
user" in their books.
That's how this seems to be in the later games.
If you steal it, it's stolen goods. Ok fair enough.
If you fight a bandit and loot his corpse, it's all stolen goods.
If you find the lost mine of whozit and find a sword in it buried for
500+ years - it's stolen goods.
A dragon flew over the village and burned it to the ground killing
everyone and there is no heir to the goods anywhere. Take it and, ding,
it's stolen goods.

This magical idea that no matter what, someone somewhere owns those
goods and has a right to them and you don't no matter what the
circumstances.

All I'm saying is that if they're going to try and put in that crap,
they might as well do it in a way that's at least remotely plausible
instead of the "the item flashes bright red and screams at everyone in
earshot that it's been stolen" that's almost what they've put in now.

Just how is it you can tell a stolen wheel of cheese from a purchased
one? or a loaf of bread? or a gold coin? or a horse?
Ok the horse would come with a receipt of some kind - but not the other
things.

So how on earth could anyone tell that the loaf of bread you're trying
to sell, with no identifying marks whatsoever, wasn't purchased by you
but was instead looted from the corpse of a Bandit who tried to murder
you deep in cave in the wilderness with no witnesses?

That's just bad programming and they'd have been better to leave it the
way it was in Daggerfall and before.

I completely hated the horses in oblivion because it seemed they were
impossible to keep marked as "mine" ... I'd obtain horses by legal
means, but they would _always_ end up somehow losing that property,
and I'd be marked as a thief for riding a horse that was mine!

[My favorite oblivion wacky-bug was when I was marked as a thief, so
of course the guards would chase me any time they saw me in a town.
However, not just then: I'd be wading through chest-deep water, in
the dark, in the far reaches of a deep level of some dungeon in the
middle of the wilderness when, out of the water, would suddenly
emerge: a castle guard! Who would then start chasing me .... ><]

I don't think that ever happened to me in Oblivion, but I might have had
a mod that fixed the problem or just been lucky.

And there you have exactly why I think the Daggerfall system was
superior, you didn't get logical impossibilities like this.

Of course if you were a Vampire and the Vampire Hunters were after you
they would come any time you slept, even on a ship in the middle of
nowhere. Slightly annoying, but then you got their stuff too. :)

I've owned seven horses by level 50. Three were killed, foolishly either taking on a dragon or in once case falling off a cliff. Latest was Frost. She was a little bit too aggressive, so when clearing out Faldar's Tooth we (Frost, Lydia and I) cleared out the bears and wolves in the area and then we left Frost off the road and halfway back to Merryfair Farm. When we returned Frost was gone. And to my great disappointment no where in the area, and did not show when we fast traveled to Whiterun stables, or her little stall in Lakeview, or Black Briar lodge, where of course she came from. Went back to search the area where we left her, and find nothing after an hour of real time traipsing through the woods. Crap.
I have horses in stables in Markarth, Katla's, and (somewhat inexplicably)on the trail to Skyborn Alter. These are my purchased horses, they bear my name, and all wandered or died and returned or respawned after I had purchased another horse.
It looks like you can own multiple horses but only one at a time is your "main" horse. So, riding a horse that is not your main horse but was purchased or given to you is not stealing, but also it is not going to stay with you.
In my case, does this mean that Frost is still alive? I don't think so. Since I didn't kill Frost she might respawn, like the others.
Which horse is now my main horse? No idea. The chestnut one isn't and neither is the black and white dappled one. Haven't tracked down the one on the path near Skyborn.
I believe I have two choices. Buy a new horse (this is getting expensive...), which I have of course done before, or kill all the others except one and see if that works.
Before Frost, however, no one would sell me a horse, they said none were available, but of course I would be looking at an unowned, saddled horse in front of me.
One time I road my horse off the glacier east of Winterhold. I lived but the horse died. It was 'wanderer'. But surprisingly, on my return to Whiterun stables, about four days later in the game, she was there and did not wander. Sadly that Chestnut mare got fried by an unusually stubborn Elder Dragon.

SO, your on your own when it comes to horses in Elder Scrolls v.

Tigre.

You know you responded to a three-year old post, right?

Anyway, the issue mentioned is why I always install the "Whistle" mod
http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/36701/?

It gives you a new power: when you whistle, the last horse you rode
comes trotting up to you. Never lose your horse again ;-)

This was common practice in usenet. You never made a new thread just continued older threads. Added knowledge to the thread going.

It really wasn't.

I mean, maybe for a thread a few months old it was okay to resurrect
it but once it reached a year or more it was generally considered rude
to do so, at least in the few dozen or so newsgroups I've frequented.
Retention wasn't that great, even "back in the day".

No, most of the time the people who resurrect these ancient posts are
GoogleGroups users who have no idea how Usenet works or the etiquette
thereof.

Nonsense!

It's common practice of idiots using google groups and exploring usenet
for the first time who can't be bothered actually looking at the date of
the post before they reply. Pretty much no one else does it.

The design of google groups doesn't help either, especially on
widescreen monitors, with the post all the way over on the left side of
the screen and the date all the way over on the right with nothing to
call attention to it.

Actual newsreaders make the date of posts FAR more obvious so people
don't reply to decade old posts.

Google seems designed to be as un-user friendly as possible, with every
redesign making things worse.
