HELP - Map not found error???
#78081

I've been trying to play extra maps but I keep getting an error message (Map
whatever.map not found!) after it looks like it's loading just fine.

I haven't played for a few years but I thought all I had to do was go into
dos, go to the duke3d folder and type "duke3d -map whatever.map" in the
command prompt.

Was there some other way to load maps?

Also, is there one really good site to get more maps and other stuff? I've
found a few through google that always end up going to one site that makes
you wait a couple hours just for one little file.

Thanks in advance.

This should work. Let's double-check a few things. Does "DIR" show
the map? Did you spell the filename right? (Or cut-and-paste, or
filename completion..) Is the map in the same directory, or if not,
did you tell duke3d the directory, like

        "duke3d -map maps\whatever.map" ?

The fileplanet site? Yeah, it's a PITA. The amount of HTML they send
at you is usually bigger than the map would be.

There are duke3d sites out there, fewer than there used to be. You
can get my 2 humble maps at:

  www.panix.com/~tehom/my-code/floater.zip
  www.panix.com/~tehom/my-code/greensh.zip

If you ever played duke on Kali you could get lots of maps from there. I've got
almost 800 of them.

the maps are in the duke3d folder itself, and the file really is there...
i've tried it with and without the .map at the end... i've even renamed it
to lowercase letters in the hope that it would somehow matter

on the other hand... i tried your floater map and it worked fine (even
though you say it's for atomic only)... nice map too... took me 37:44 to do
it with my usual cheats (god/weapons)

by the way... is there any way to have unlimited jetpack without the god
mode cheat? i've looked through all the con files and haven't seen anything
for it... as much as i love playing god, it just makes the game pointless...
even with my health, armor, and weapons at 999 :)

that's the one... i even tried to get around it (being a web designer, i
know a few tricks) and just got error messages from the server... actually,
i'm kinda surprised to find anything on the net for this game at all
anymore... must be due to all you loyal fans who are still waiting forever
for forever... hopefully i won't die of old age before it comes out

sounds like a corrupt map - I've had that happen to me.

I would recommend:

http://www.bur.st/~duke3d/
http://dynamic5.gamespy.com/~amc/index.php

And an huge but not very sorted ftp site:

ftp://ftp.sunet.se/pub/games/PC/3drealms/duke3d/

I don't know what it is, then. "duke3d -map whatever.map" is the
right command. I don't know what keeps it from finding the map.

Since I only have Atomic edition (1.5), I can only see how 1.5 treats
it. I've gotten mixed reports on whether pre-Atomic edition will
work.

Thanks.

Aw, that takes the fun out of it. I always figured that if floater
were ever in an episode, it'd have to be arranged so that one wouldn't
have jetpack or scuba.

Looking at the source, there's no way. God mode treats the jetpack
specially.

Didja ever notice that if you're in god mode you can still pick up one
jetpack, but not immediately a second one (until you drain the jetpack
a bit, of course). That's because (Warning! Presence of C detected!)
god mode doesn't set `ps[myconnectindex].jetpack_amount' to 1600, the
way "dnstuff" and "dninventory" immediately do (in GAME.C). Instead,
it keeps setting `p->jetpack_amount' to 1599 every turn (in ACTORS.C).

So (in English this time) only god mode replenishes the jetpack.

Maybe they'll just skip from Duke 3D past Duke 4ever to the next
version: Duke 5nally Out. }:)

ya know... the acronym "DNF" is also used in racing... is even has the same
meaning here and there :)

I did three Episodes plus three extra maps, all in sequence, go here:
http://membres.lycos.fr/duke3d/eindex.htm
Click "Best Maps"
then "New Episodes"
Look for Steve Long (1,2 &3)
One flawed map, in a large space port, one door opens, but the ceiling
falls. Error in sector assignment. Just clip into it and it will rise, then
continue game. After the three Episodes end, play
Movies
Sealab67
Endwar
In that sequence to finish the story line.

so far... almost all maps that i've tried (20ish?) work on 1.3d... and i'm
assuming many of them are only for the atomic edition.... only thing is
there's a couple graphics bugs and it either seems like duke is 3 feet tall
or 10 feet tall... i'm always jumping to shoot out montiors and crouching to
hit switches

i only really use god for the jetpack... and would rather just have the
jetpack without god mode

i guess i could use dnstuff or dninventory instead of god mode though... as
long as it doesn't give me the keys as well... i like to cheat, but not that
much

but having all the weapons at your disposal is the way duke would want to
play... why shoot someone with a pistol when you can use the devastator
instead?

nope... i didn't notice... the best i've got modifying the jetpack is
106%... and it still goes down anyway

although i did notice the foot is actually called a knee in defs.con... i
guess it would've been a little hard to see his knee hit someone in the game
though

they still didn't fix the little glitch of holding down the mighty foot key
and control (weapon: foot)... somehow he manages to float while both his
feet are kicking at once

There's also a crack in roller.map (E1L2) that's supposed to bring
down a wall, but instead the conveyor pushes the crack out of player
space where it can't be exploded. Again, clipping through it will let
the game proceed.

If you don't have time to fix them, I'd like to.

I remember. Somehow, I don't know how, but after zipping and uploading to
site, this happened. My version works fine.
Please feel free to fix both. There are some other minor flaws. Couple of
lifts, that if you don't get on after opening, you'll be left behind,
because trigger switch will be inaccessable.
Thanks

I've done so. Both maps now finish without DNCLIP. The result is at
http://www.panix.com/~tehom/dukemaps/e1steve.zip.

I have a list of the exact changes if you want. I'd email it but I
can't decode your spamblocked address.
