I have been trying to track down releases of massive amounts of levels. I have my eye on DZone Collectors Edition (2000 Levels) but it is for the Macintosh and I have a PC. Does anybody know if the Macintosh wad files would be compatible with the PC version of Doom?

You'd probably be better of just downloading maps off the net though.

Nope.
Macs use another byte-order than PCs.
http://www.cs.umass.edu/~verts/cs32/endian.html
Doom wads which are created for PC have to be processed ("byte-swapped") to
be used on macs, and vice versa,
with programs like WADenizer.
http://homepage.fcgnetworks.net/jwarren/doom/extra.html
Chances are that most Doom wads for the Macintosh were made on PCs and
processed for Mac, since the MacDoom
scene is marginal compared to the PC Doom scene. So you would better look
for wads in ftp.cdrom mirrors like sunet.se or the doomworld archives.
ftp://ftp.sunet.se/pub/pc/games/idgames/levels/
http://www.doomworld.com/idgames/
Only few wads, like Laz Rojas WolfenDoom episodes, were created on Macs and
then converted for PCs.

*stands corrected but suprised*
You would have thought any endian-byte-swapping would be done by MacDoom, to
avoid the inconvenience of having to use different-format wads.

All this refers to original Doom. Maybe modern sourceports can perform the
byteswap operation on runtime and use PC wads directly for Mac ? I'm not
sure.
Which sourceports do exist for Macintosh anyway ? Doom Legacy is also ported
to Mac, but that's it.

It'd be weird if MacDoom was the only one to use byte-swapped wads. The Solaris Sparc port from id (Dave Taylor?) can clearly use the original wads. From ftp.sunet.se:/pub/pc/games/idgames/idstuff/doom/sun/sundoom.txt: This is DOOM for Solaris v2.4 on the Sparc architecture. You should must also get doom1.wad.gz if you're new to DOOM. If you already have a v1.7a wad file (doom.wad, doom1.wad, or doom2.wad), then you may use it, as long as you skip the demos. Sparc is the only one of the other architectures listed in idstuff (nextstep, qnx, sgi) that I'm sure is big-endian (mac certainly is, and linux and win95 are on i386 and therefore little-endian). And speaking of source-ports, I remember compiling (and running) xdoom for sparc64 (also big-endian) about 5 years ago, and prboom on a sparc running OpenBSD sometime since then. > Which sourceports do exist for Macintosh anyway ? Doom Legacy is also ported > to Mac, but that's it. I'm surprised prboom isn't supported in OS X, since it seems to be POSIXy enough and SDL apparently runs there. (Same goes for other SDL-based ports like Eternity.) If I ever get a Mac this'd be one of the first things I look into... -- Chris Odorjan - codorjan@gmail.com - http://www.execulink.com/~bobnet/
