Is there a recompiled Doom executable that will work on Windows 2000, and for that matter XP without compatibility mode? I don't mean the souped-up GL versions...they're just not the same.

Are you talking about trying to run it without a 3D card?? ie without using OpenGL?? Dont think thats possible... Cheers Dre

Unmodified (not GL) but recompiled to work properly in later Windows versions.

No. It does work properly.
Doom is bound to DOS4GW Professional, a 32-bit DOS Extender.
It should "work" under Windows 2000, no problem.
But it won't
- use higher resolution video modes. It is stuck with VGA 320x200x256
colours
And it may have problem with sound.
That is because most modern PC's have plug-and-play for hardware interrupts
where as DOOM requires a sound card that it supports and a IRQ configurable
between 0 and 7 (because ID Software had not figured out at the time,
programmatically, how to get the slave PIC working with DOS4GW so that IRQ's
for 8 to 15 were supported).
It is not Doom that has moved. The PC and OS's have moved away from Doom :-)
So Doom is stuck. And straight recompilation won't fix it as you imply.
Your best bet is to download a port like JDoom or ZDoom.
JDoom will do all you want in terms of sound and/or video mode options and
any other feature you want.

Ahhh I see, should have picked that up considering you did mention "Doom" with out the 3 :) Have you tried dosbox? Works with a heap of other old games and gives you full sound support... Cheers Dre

Ok, but only so long as it's identical to the original... GL versions tend to be quite different in the way the game 'plays'. Thanks for the help.

Doomsday and Doom Legacy are configurable to look and play pretty much exactly like the original. Just turn off texture filtering, movement smoothing, etc, and it should be identical, or so close that you wouldn't notice. There's also Doom95, which was an early port to Win95 but it works fine on WinXP too. The only change there was the option to have higher resolutions and run it in a window. You can download it from http://files.filefront.com/1291752 (It comes with the shareware WAD file, but you can use the full version Doom1 or Doom2 files with it).

Not quite: it accesses the mouse in a way that XP doesn't like. Unlike the original .exes, however, sound will work and you can run it as high as 640x480. I'll second prboom, though; it resembles the original .exes to the point where it can play most demos recorded for them. It also has high resolution and all of the enhancements contained in Boom. http://prboom.sf.net/ There's also Chocolate Doom, which is fairly recent and seeks to reproduce the behaviour of the .exes as closely as possible. It lacks high-resolution modes, though. http://chocolate-doom.sf.net/ -- Chris Odorjan - codorjan@gmail.com - http://www.execulink.com/~bobnet/

It has very limited higher resolutions, up to 640x400 (or perhaps 640x480) I recall. Nothing higher at all. And it is flaky, particularly on restoration of saves. I don't think it solves the archvile bug. There are numerous times when it does not restore a game, and the executable promptly barfs. The times when it does this is if you save halfway through some enemy attack. So if some mancubus has fired his first set of fireballs, you save, the restore is certainly duff. It is unbelievably irritating. I would not run it this days. There are numerous ports that are far more stable. I believe that the team that worked on Doom95 at Microsoft were the same team that brought DirectX 1.0. Stephen Howe

It certainly is very good, no doubt about it. One of the best ports if not
the best.
But my experience is that some things are fixed each version while opening
up other problems with other features.
glBSP was found to be flaky for some Hexen maps (unfortunately some Raven
Hexen maps were not 100% clean).
I submitted bug reports to SourceForge on this.
Current version 1.8.6:
Seems that command line switch -respawn is now broken on JDoom.
Sky overhead is not reproduced for all maps (Doom, Heretic, Hexen)
Invincibility on original Heretic flashes the screen on wearing off. On
JHeretic it does not.
Font in console annoyingly has some type of double shadow so words look
blurred (also for 1.8.4, 1.8.5).
Bloodscourge Head on Death Kings of Dark Citadel on Constables Gate for
Mage is not placed correctly. Map crashes.
Blocked walls seethrough at certain angles on Guardian of Steel of
Hexen.
Lately SkyJake does not seem to be that active which is bad news for all of
us :-(
