First I thought DOOM was really tough. When I saw '... professional protection mode ...' message I thought my time was over. I used to crack games a lot and I thought I could crack any game, it was just a matter of time. But I don't know about protected mode much so I assumed that was a beginning of a new age - the age of games running in protected mode (maybe I'm wrong completely about DOOM, I must admit I've never tried to find out about protected mode, it's just beyond me). Last night I had nothing to do and I just decided to run DOOM under my good old cracking utility I wrote a year ago. Just for fun. The key point of this program is reprogramming interrupt controller so it still works even if tricky evil Game took over all interrupts. I expected my computer to hang first. It didn't. Then I thought DOOM was too smart to let this little tiny bastard live. That wasn't the case either. I pressed very familiar to me combination Ctrl-Enter and then Ctrl-Esc to pop-up AFD - I was inside AFD ( I used to use it 'cause it was small and good enough ), happy and confused. I tried to resume DOOM and it worked ... My point, guys, is you just reprogram interrupt controller before running DOOM to avoid such a confusion. That should be it. I'll never be able to crack your games then ( my friend will, he knows how to handle reprogrammed interrupt controllers, he's pretty cool ). Best wishes to ID, yours sincerely PVP. -- Oleg Pestovsky p...@iastate.edu

I'm a bit confused. Granted, I don't know a lot about "cracking" games, but I thought the idea of cracking a game means to defeat it's copy protection so you can copy it and play it on another site. As far as I know, both the Shareware and the Registered version of Doom are not copy-protected, unless I was playing with a cracked version... Does "cracking" in this context mean something different? >Oleg Pestovsky >p...@iastate.edu -- Gene Lee el...@descartes.UWaterloo.ca

What the "Profesional Protected Mode" he is refering to means is the enviroment (not quite the word I want...) that DOOM runs in. It means that DOOM runs with the CPU in "protected mode" (don't ask me about all the details of what this means, I don't remember), not that the game is copy protected. There is NO copy protection in the Shareware Version of DOOM (not having yet recieced my Reg. copy, I can make no claims about it). I will explain you, guys, what I meant by cracking. A couple years ago I've been doing it a lot 'cause there was no way to get a registered version of any commercial game in Russia. Games were usually coming by illegal copying only God knows where from, and they often contained some sort of copy protection such as '...enter the word from page X, line Y, number Z of your manual ...'. I hope you know what I mean. So the task for a 'game-cracker' was just to try to find a list of these passwords or to get rid of this disturbing part of the game. Sometimes this was such a fun because some games were so tricky that I had to spend more than a week trying to understand the algorithm of the game. And at the end there was a prize waiting for you - half an hour of playing the game which was running so predictable. Sometimes cracking meant understanding of a structure of SaveGame-file. That was even more fun 'cause some games didn't know how to handle wrong values of SG-file - pure fun. Sometimes cracking meant cheating such as immortal life, maximum ammo at any times, more money and so on, and so on ... In order to do it - to 'crack' the game - you usually had to trace that game. As far as I understand that's nearly impossible with my 'cracking' utilities if that 'mean,tricky,evil,nasty...' game is running in 'protected mode' of computer. But in the case of DOOM I could do it. I must say that I didn't even try to crack DOOM 'cause there was no need for it (iddqd, idbehold, idspispopd ...) . So I decided that DOOM was not running in PM. I might be mistaken. ( I suspended that I was mistaken 'cause I found that DS of DOOM was always 170, that's odd ) If so I would be glad to hear from someone who understands better than I do. I appreciate that. Sincerely yours, guys, PVP -- Oleg Pestovsky p...@iastate.edu

I think you're confusing the "Protected Mode" which DOOM runs under for a tamper-protection module. This is not what "Protected Mode" means. It refers to the way the program is run such that it cannot be interfered with by other concurrently running programs, thus causing a General Protection Violation (or something to that effect). Windows 3.1 also runs in Protected Mode as opposed to Real Mode, which means it attempts to isolate concurrently running programs so they don't interfere with each other. This is a gross generalization, but it explains why you found DOOM so easy to "crack". There was never anything to crack... >Oleg Pestovsky >p...@iastate.edu -- Gene Lee el...@descartes.UWaterloo.ca

Hi Salty I must confess that either I don't understand anything about PM or you still don't know what I mean. By PM I mean : When you switch to PM from Real Mode all your segment registers don't work anymore the way they did before. Now you have GS and LS (don't remember exactly ) and special segments (one for each register) that show how memory is arranged. Then you have segment register for interrupts (IS, perhaps) and segment that show where your interrupt programs are. Besides all old interrupt vectors such as 01,02,08,09 are now reserved for special events such as different violations of memory and port access and many others. If you try to get access to memory using, say DS, CPU calculates physical address in different way than in Real Mode. Intel386 CPU has additional virtual mode for 8086. I'm sure that most of what I just said is not correct 'cause I read a book about PM almost a year ago and I've never tried to write anything for PM. But considering all these facts you must admit that program , written for Real Mode, would not work in PM, especially my program which allows to use standard debuggers while game is running. I'd like to repeat again that I didn't try to crack DOOM, I tried to trace it and this seemed to be successful. So if you have any comments I'll be happy to hear from you.
