I think you're confusing the "Protected Mode" which DOOM runs under for a
tamper-protection module. This is not what "Protected Mode" means. It refers
to the way the program is run such that it cannot be interfered with by other
concurrently running programs, thus causing a General Protection Violation
(or something to that effect). Windows 3.1 also runs in Protected Mode as
opposed to Real Mode, which means it attempts to isolate concurrently
running programs so they don't interfere with each other. This is a gross
generalization, but it explains why you found DOOM so easy to "crack". There
was never anything to crack...
