Will Nocturne (shipping version) run well on V3 ? Or is some patch/hack or something required?

The government wants you to think that, in comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware.video, "eps" <ep...@nospam.bellatlantic.net> wrote: :Will Nocturne (shipping version) run well on V3 ? :Or is some patch/hack or something required? Yeah, I quote from Nocturne's official web page http://www.nocturnegame.com/ "Q. Is there a fix/hack to get the Voodoo 3 cards working with the demo? A. Voodoo support has been added to the final version of the game and the two updated demos." They have a really snotty attitude towards the V3, saying it would be better to run in software mode than use the V3 so you can get 32-bit color instead of the Voodoo's "sub-standard" 16-bit color. This annoys the hell out of me, as you can get 32-bit color and 10 FPS with a TNT2, but you can get 100FPS in 16-bit color with a V3. Quality is nice, but if it means a horrid framerate it isn't worth it. I've never understood why having a wonderful looking images at an unplayably slow framerate is better than having decent images at a great framerate.

It's a fact that Nocturne was programmed from the start to use 32-bit textures and it IS going to look better that way. Another fact is that V3 can't handle 32-bit textures, and as a result Nocturne will not look as good as it does on other cards. I have the full version of Nocturne running on a K6-III 450 with a TNT2 and V2 SLI. The games runs fluidly at 800x600 32-bit on the TNT2, and looks WAY better than on the V2. I understand the framerate versus image quality argument may favor the V3 in a Q3 fragfest, but in a single-player game with graphics the quality of Nocturne, you're giving up a lot more than you imagine in 16-bit. It just doesn't look as good. And I disagree that Terminal Reality is being snotty about the V3, they are just being, well Realistic. The recommended system for Nocturne is a 400mhz cpu with 128 megs of ram, a 200 meg swapfile and an AGP 3D card capable of rendering in 32-bit. They didn't pull that out of thin air. It's a very demanding game with state-of-the-art graphics. I'm not trying to put down you or 3dfx, but Nocturne is the best example so far of the limitations of the V3. It will work, but you won't get the full benefit. Don't take it personally, it's just the simple truth. I just found it snotty that the game's programmers suggested bypassing the V3 entirely and using software mode. I know 16-bit color has it's limitations, but every game I've seen that runs 32-bit color does it incredibly slowly (note: I have not seen a GeForce in 32-bit mode yet). I have not played Nocturne, although it looks interesting, since there's no net gaming I don't see much reason to buy it. The requirement for a gigabyte of free disk space made it seem even less appealing. The screenshots (that I've seen) looked kind of uneven, almost like glQuake1 shots on steroids, but I'd probably have to see the game to say anything on it's image quality. I was really just trying to answer the guys question, sorry for going into the 3dfx rant.

Well I guess I'll take my "substandard" V3 and my money elsewhere. There are a LOT of good games out and many more on the way that look and run well on V3. I will not buy Nocturne unless it turns out to be a game-of-the-year caliber product. In comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware.video eps <ep...@nospam.bellatlantic.net> wrote: : Will Nocturne (shipping version) run well on V3 ? : Or is some patch/hack or something required? AFAIK, the problem with Voodoo 3 wasn't as much with 16-bit color (which _would_ look crappy indeed), but a required blitting operation of some sort which wasn't present in its drivers. So the game might support V3 in its retail version and 3dfx could also fix its drivers.

Nocturne doesn't require a gig of free space. It has four chapters that are basically individual games that can be loaded one at a time and never take more than 400 megs. I understand your preference for online gaming, but in dissing Nocturne you are missing a unique first-person experience that really advances the state of the art in graphics. Calling Nocturne "Quake 1 on steroids" based on poor quality screenshots pretty much proves that you are ill-informed about the game and missing the point of my post. As I said, I have both a TNT2 and V2 SLI in my system, I know the pros and cons of both, and I have looked at Nocturne on both. Call me snotty too, but I agree with the programmers that Nocturne is best viewed on a 32-bit card. That doesn't mean it won't run on 3dfx hardware, it will. It just shows the limitations of 16-bit rendering more than older games.
