Hmmmmmm... well.... I recently bought Shogun 2, and have started a campaign from the Southern Island featured in the tutorial. There's certainly a lot to like here, although I have one or two niggles, like loading time. 4 minutes before your ready to load your saved game? Hmmm... But to gameplay... I struggled to capture the small territory with the stone mine in the North-east part of my small island. I basically needed a bigger and better equipped force (and some tactical skill!) but as it is, I'm not too clear about capturing gates. You can sometimes get a rectangular icon when you try to send your men to a gate which I thought meant capture it but apparently not. Do you just have to scale the walls, and then hold gate's area until it becomes yours? This was what I did, but casualties were heavy and there's a lot of writing to the next of kin that I would sooner have avoided. I'm a little unsure of the game, its clearly very good and ambitious, I'll have to see, its still early days.

Yes, scale the walls and hold this area to open the gate, you will almost always suffer heavy casualities if you try. Another option is to burn down the gate, try to distract the enemy at another side before you do. Once the gatehouse is in flames, pull back and wait for it to burn down. I would recommend to just scale the walls to get inside, dont bother with opening the door. Dismounting your general and getting him inside too might help morale. Pathing issues during siege battles really drive me nuts so I try to avoid them as much as I can. I usually siege them and wait for them to sally out, I am much better in the open field :-) >I'm a little unsure of the game, its clearly very good and ambitious, >I'll have to see, its still early days. Still bugs already seen in Empire TW before plus some new ones, unfortunatley. WD

Unless he gets killed, as happeneed in an earlier attempt. :) Thanks for your thoughts. I tried burning down a gate yesterday, it didn't seem to do me a huge amount of good, I eventually captured the stronghold, but again with depressingly high casualties. I'm sure I've got lots to learn with the game, but in Rome and Medieval II I prided myself on keeping casualties to a minimum. Maybe Shogun II accurately reflects the times, but it seems a bit like wholesale slaughter. I still haven't worked out when you hold the pointer near a gate what that rectangular (rhomboid) icon means. You can get the flame icon as well, and the ladder one, which are pretty obvious, but...? > > Pathing issues during siege battles really drive me nuts so I try to avoid > them as much as I can. Maybe Shogun II >accurately reflects the times, but it seems a bit like wholesale >slaughter. I always try to keep casualities low too, but it might be the wrong approach at least for ashigaru units and reflect history like you said. They are cheap, build fast and are more or less just meat shields/arrow magnets for the expensive units - with the exception of yari ashigaru against cavalry/generals. As for bow ashigari - dont waste their fire against armored units like samurai, they have almost no armor penetration. If you did not notice - you can combine almost depleted units after battle by just pulling icons over each other. >I still haven't worked out when you hold the pointer near a gate what >that rectangular (rhomboid) icon means. I almost always works if you have aprox. even numbers, seems the AI hates sieges battles no less than we do :-) Just a little warning - if you siege during winter, you will loose men by attrition in enemy territory. >And at the early stage of the game that I'm at, all the strongholds, and >their surroundings have appeared pretty much identical. :-/ Probably a bug, I noticed it as well (starting in SW part of Japan) http://forums.totalwar.com/showthread. php/10126-Every-siege-i-played-so-far-takes-place-in-an-identical-fortress! I noticed that the yellow rhomboid appears when you defend a stronghold, and it basically tells the selected troops to man the battlements, but it seems to have seeped through into the attacker's options as well, at least as far as the icon appearing. I fondly remember games like Midwinter and Carrier Command when we used to get fantastic manuals. :) > I almost always works if you have aprox. even numbers, seems the AI hates > sieges battles no less than we do :-) This tactic has been working well for me, thanks - although I have managed to "steal" a couple of stronghold's when the foolish occupier had only a couple of units at home, neither of which were bow men. I think I'm at the stage where my name is starting to "ring out" so I maybe getting some attention from the Shogun sooner than wanted.
