Yes, scale the walls and hold this area to open the gate, you will almost 
always suffer heavy casualities if you try. Another option is to burn down the 
gate, try to distract the enemy at another side before you do. Once the 
gatehouse is in flames, pull back and wait for it to burn down. I would 
recommend to just scale the walls to get inside, dont bother with opening the 
door. Dismounting your general and getting him inside too might help morale.

Pathing issues during siege battles really drive me nuts so I try to avoid 
them as much as I can. I usually siege them and wait for them to sally out, I 
am much better in the open field :-)
