What does everybody like better? Xwing or Tie Fighter? I find myself
liking Tie Fighter more even though most of the imperial ships don't have
sheilds.

Sure, I prefer tie Fighter as well, blasting some of that Rebel Scum!
:) No, seriously, Tie has a whole lot of features that have been
greatly improved compared to X-Wing.

Now if they could retrofit the TIE features into X-Wing, that'd be
perfect. :) I think it'd be doable without that much work for the
programmers. I mean, isn't TIE Fighter just a later version of the
X-Wing engine?

It's a strategic wargame occuring in real-time, not real-time strategy.

TIE Fighter uses an 800X600 version of X-Wing's 320X200
engine, but it's a totally different game, with several imperial
missions.

If you're the ambitious type, you could always get out an XWing mission
editor to examine the XWing missions in detail, then get a TIE editor
to re-create them in that game. There's a couple of different patches
around that let you fly Rebel craft in TIE, so that part would be easy.
The Death Star surface missions would be impossible, though, unless TIE's
engine has capabilities LA hasn't told us about :). Also, the dumbed-
down TIE Bombers in TIE might be a problem.

But I'm not ambitious, so I won't be doing it :).
