Hi I finished Stick of Truth yesterday and I wanted to give a final verdict. The game is hilarious, if a game comes close to the feeling of a long Souhtpark Episode than this one. The game itself is not that hard and more on the JRPG side with its mechanics. So do not expect a deep western rpg here. I assume this was intentional to make more room for the story. Overall I really liked the game, and the length of 15 hours definitely was right for the 10 dollars I paid on a Steam Sale for it. Nice job Obsidian. Werner

I think that's the lowest I've seen it, so far. It reviewed and sold well on release.

It was finished for me when I realized I couldn't remap the horrid keys even by editing the .ini files.

Since I play most games lying in bed using Steam streaming onto a notebook computer, my preferred input nowadays is controller anyway, it simply plays better than a touchpad on a notebook. So in case of southpark I never even gave it a second thought playing with a keyboard. I imagine the quicktime events during some of the attacks you can make or have to defend can be quite cumbersome on a keyboard. Werner

Ah, but is that actually true of a properly implemented PC game, or just true of a bad console port that was designed with controllers in mind and had no real keyboard/mouse system implemented. IE Hellgate London, a definite PC game which could be played in first or third person, I usually played in 3rd person, since you could see more of the surroundings that way and the only time I used 1st person was if I played a marksman and was sniping. I mostly played engineers, and I did use sniper rifles, easily and accurately sniping with then in 3rd person with the precision that a mouse gives. Defiance is another one, arguably designed for controllers, since it's both PC and console, but no console player will ever have the control that a PC player will. Mostly the console types used the self-aiming weapons, and/or the LMGs that spray a lot of bullets into the general area of the target. They can't snipe in real time with a controller, whereas when I was working up my sniping skill I routinely headshotted enemies and sometimes had 3 corpses standing headless before the first could fall down. Since auto-aim does not aim for the head, but the torso, that's something a controller will never be able to equal. >Since I play most games lying in bed using Steam streaming >onto a notebook computer, my preferred input nowadays is controller >anyway, it simply plays better than a touchpad on a notebook. Never though of playing a shooter in bed on a laptop. Still though "better then a touchpad" doesn't mean it's anywhere near as good or precise as a mouse on a desk. >So in case of southpark I never even gave it a second thought playing >with a keyboard. Game has QTEs, I don't buy it. I want content and gameplay in my games, not mini-movies that prompt me to hit a key. That's not me playing a game, that's the game playing me. I wouldn't put up with that shit in the arcades back in the Dragon's Lair/Space Ace days and I sure as hell won't now. Xocyll -- I don't particularly want you to FOAD, myself. Actually it is less a mini movie, it is more a trigger within an action to perform the action right. For instance if you attack you have a certain timeframe to hit a key or certan key combos, and if you hit within that timeframe the attack is performed well if not then it fails or has less impact. Same goes for defense. This is a mechanism which can be found in many JRPGs and adds an action element to the turn based battle. Here is an example of one of the boss battles (against Eric Cartman so be aware of spoilers) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=20ZDt1cJAZ8 > That's not me playing a game, that's the game playing me. > > I wouldn't put up with that shit in the arcades back in the Dragon's > Lair/Space Ace days and I sure as hell won't now. > Well it is not the usual you have to go through QTEs to progress the story problem which has been crawling up in so many games lately (Telltale I am talking to you)

This is a mechanism which can be found in many >JRPGs and adds an action element to the turn based battle. And it was found in the latter Tomb Raider games, which is why I stopped playing them. It IS basically a mini movie with prompts for actions from you. Cutscene-> flash on screen->you hit key or don't-> cutscene (success action or fail action.) So in TR anyway, I'm walking the character down a hallway, when suddenly I have no control because it's in a QTE cutscene sequence and I'm no longer playing the game, I'm WATCHING it and waiting to do actions prompted by the game in the allotted amount of time and then watching another cutscene based on whether I hit the key I was told to hit at the right moment I was told to hit it. That's not a game, that's an interactive movie. If I want to watch I'll watch a movie or TV show, when I fire up a game I want to PLAY. It's the difference between a great novel with fantastic storytelling and one of those choose your own adventure books, which usually barely get above adequate for 8 year olds. >Here is an example of one of the boss battles (against Eric Cartman so >be aware of spoilers) > >https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=20ZDt1cJAZ8 >> That's not me playing a game, that's the game playing me. >> >> I wouldn't put up with that shit in the arcades back in the Dragon's >> Lair/Space Ace days and I sure as hell won't now. >> >Well it is not the usual you have to go through QTEs to progress the >story problem which has been crawling up in so many games lately >(Telltale I am talking to you) What I'm saying is simply this; Put QTEs in your game and I will not buy it, because it's not a game any longer, it's an interactive movie. It's easier to do pre-rendered cutscenes, to force the "player" to do exactly what you want him to do. Do the action as prompted and get through, don't and die, no alternatives, no freedom of movement, no exploration, no choice. It's actually worse than merely on-rails, it's on rails as an automaton that presses a button. I want to walk through the maze and explore, not get in the ride-car and press 1 to duck under the obstacle, press 1 to lean into the curve, press 1 to ... as I ride into new "events". That's NOT a game, that's an amusement park ride that doesn't even let you scream or yell unless you're prompted to. Xocyll -- I don't particularly want you to FOAD, myself. You'll be more of a cautionary example if you'll FO And Get Chronically, Incurably, Painfully, Progressively, Expensively, Debilitatingly Ill. It is pretty good, but I stopped as even with headphones the anal probing scenes were not something I wanted my kids to see by accident. I suppose I should have expected that from South Park. Of course since I quit playing it when the kids were up, I then got into a different game (Risk of Rain), and didn't want to leave it to go back to this one once they were in bed. Other than that the game was quite entertaining. If you don't mind cartoon anal probing, I'd say check it out. I would say with the timing attacks, I'm not great at it, and far worse with the defense, and I'm usually pretty good at twitch. I can't seem to time Butter's swing around attack or lightning attack almost ever. I have better luck with the New Guy, but then of course I try them out and use the ones I can time better. Even so missing a few doesn't necessarily spell defeat, and I haven't had any particular problems defeating any foes. - Justisaur

Actually the anal probing scenes are rather harmless compared to what comes afterwards. This game is definitely not to be played when kids are around. Werner
