I had tried to put this on my computer last year and it wouldn't work
on Windows XP but I upgraded to XP Pro and I tried it again and it
worked. Yay. I just wondered who has played it and what you thought
of it? It's kind of old and I didn't know if I would enjoy it or not
but wow!! I was pleasantly surprised. I am having a blast with it!!
I was looking forward to the Silver Earring before but now I really am.
Hope I can get it soon and I hope it's as good as this one. One of
the best adventure games I've come across. Anyway, just wanted to know
if anyone else liked this game.

Hi Paula: Looks like you changed your email address.
I always say that Rose Tattoo is one of the best games I've ever played. Its
a long game and a very interesting story with the game taking place at many
locations. The acting is very well done. I play it again once in a while. In
my opinion, the Silver Earring which I am now playing is quite good, but not
as good in story or acting as Rose Tattoo. Rose Tattoo game has been very
hard to find for quite a while. Its an older game now but I think it can
compete with any newer adventure game in all ways.

I am getting near the end of Silver Earring. I use Win 98SE so no problems
running the game.
Silver Earring is a good game and certainly worth playing. Actually I
posted a message on Friday night asking for a hint when I got stuck for a
while on the game and in that message I asked what others here thought of
the game but no one replied to my question. So maybe they will reply to yours
:)
I got unstuck a few hours after posting my first request for hint - so had
to post another message saying I got unstuck. Often the way.
I think you will also like Silver Earring, and will form your own opinion
of both games.
I will be interested to hear your opinion of both games.

Hi, Mary.

Yes, I did change my email address. I am actually using the yahoo
address for stuff on the internet to avoid getting spam on my real
address since I changed it.

I nearly gave up on Rose Tattoo because I had so much trouble getting
it to run before but this time I just installed it and it immediately
worked. I really think it has to do with upgrading to XP Pro cause
that is all that is different from when I tried it before. I'm so glad
I didn't give up because I would have missed out. Since it's kind of
old, I just really didn't think it would be as good as it is. I am
really looking forward to Silver Earring. I played just the very first
part of the demo but I decided to quit and wait until I could play the
whole game but I enjoyed it. I probably won't get to have it until
Christmas, though but maybe I will get it sooner.

Rose Tattoo has held my interest from the very beginning. So far I
haven't gotten bored with it once. Everything is logical and there is
nothing that you just have to guess what to do cause it all makes
sense. I love that. The only two things that have annoyed me in the
game are: 1.) It takes quite a while to go in or out of Holmes' house
because they have to remove or put on their coats and hats. That is
getting old. 2.) Sometimes when I try to "use" an object, the game
just quits. I have to restart the game and go do something else and
come back to "use" the object. It has happened with 3-4 objects so far
but I'm always able to go back and try again at a different time.
Those are my only gripes and they are little (unless there comes a time
that leaving and coming back to an object doesn't make it useable) so I
think the game is great.

Thats ok. I thought maybe it was my ISP giving me the message twice. Half
the time, they seem to either miss messages altogether or post something
twice. They were down for at least an hour when I went online around noon
today - I think they cut staff on weekends and right after because thats
when they sometimes have problems. I wouldnt be surprised.

I don't put my real email address in messages, and so far I don't get much
spam. I also have a hotmail address that I use now and then. It comes in
handy.

Yes, it is good you diodn't give up or you would have missed a great game.
I haven't gotten around to XP - its very expensive to buy. I don't know if I
need to buy the complete XP or an upgrade since I have Win 98SE. Haven't
gotten to investigating about that yet. Isn't XCP Pro for business and not
so much for home use? It must cost a lot to buy XP then upgrade to XP Pro.

Yes, you may as well play it all when you get the game. I played the demo
though and got stuck and never did finish.
Luckily I didn't get stuck in the same part in the game itself. I got stuck
at another few places though. I wouldn't say its a real difficult game, but
there are a couple of annoying things - there are two timed sequences when
you have to do things in a certain period of time or you die. I am stuck at
one like that right now and doing the same thing over and over is very
tedious. Very
aggravating and I wish no games had them. I can't imagine why game
developers/designers think that game players like that kind of thing. Maybe
some do, but I don't know anyone personally who does.

Yes, that part annoyed me too, and you feel like saying "hurry up and get
your coats on and get outside" :) and why do they have to do that every
time. But the game is so good in other ways, you learn to get used to it.

Sometimes when I try to "use" an object, the game

That did not happen to me, but it may be because you are using Win XP,
though I haven't played it for a while and can't remember if I played it on
my new system which I got about a year ago.

> Those are my only gripes and they are little (unless there comes a time

Well, like you say, as long as the "use" object hasn't happened very often,
it wouldn't affect your game playing too much. What I liked about the game
was its a long game and Holmes and Watson go to so many different locations,
I found it so interesting to see where they would go next.

The only real criticism of the game I have is that production standards
seemed to fall off in the later stages of the game, which was
particularly evident in some of the worst voice acting I've ever heard.
There was an obviously non-professional female trying to voice both a
spoiled schoolboy and Queen Victoria. Some of the later dialogue wasn't
as good either. I wondered if it had been passed over to an inferior
production team at some point.

XP is what came on my computer when I bought it two years ago. The
only reason I have XP Pro now is because the company that I work for
went to a digital system and for the software that they needed to put
on my computer, I needed XP Pro so they upgraded it for me. Otherwise,
I never would have done that. I, actually, saw no difference
whatsoever between XP and XP Pro but I'm sure there is something in the
inner workings that's different and I figure since the game didn't work
before but did after, that is why. I'm not sure about it, though.

I wouldn't say its a real difficult game, but

I agree with you about the timed sequences. I don't like them, either.
Like you said, maybe someone does but I couldn't imagine it. Maybe
they think that putting something like that in an adventure game will
make it appeal to a larger audience. I kind of doubt that it really
does, though.

I am a a point right now that I think I need to use an object on a
specific item and every time I click to use it, the game quits. I have
left to do other things and came back to it and it still does it. I
hope it's not going to stop the game. I would just hate that. I'm
very glad to hear that the game is long. I figured it would be kind of
short and not last long. I'm enjoying it too much for it to end any
time soon or stop because I can't use an item!!

I guess I've not gotten that far yet. But, if I'm really enjoying a
game and having fun with it, I can overlook bad acting. Maybe it won't
bother me.

I guess I am like Paula. As long as the game for me has an interesting story
and keeps my attention, I can overlook some bad acting. I thought the main
characters of Holmes and Watson and Wiggins were all good actors. The part
of the schoolboy could have been better acted, but his part in the game was
more minor. Queen Victoria part could have been better acting as well, but
that was more towards the end of the game, and not a major character. None
of these two characters acting bothered me because I was so focussed on the
rest of the game and what was going on in the game. I guess people pay
attention to different features in a game and what bothers one person may
not bother another and vice versa.

I'm not trying to put people off the game, which was, on the whole, very
good. But I do think it's fair comment.

However, there was one puzzling feature about the game - it was based on
a central misconception - Mycroft Holmes was not a government minister,
as the game's developers seemed to think.

Yes, it is. The part of Virgil, which was the boy you mention, was poorly
done considering that Holmes and Watson and others were so good (In my view
at least). Queen Victoria was not well done either, and I did mention that
above. But on the whole, I found it to be one of the best games I've ever
played.

What position did Mycroft have in Rose Tattoo?
Also, I can't remember him being mentioned in Silver Earring. I am not at
the end of the game yet, but close to it. By the way, I think the acting in
Rose Tattoo is a lot better than the acting of Wiggins and Watson and
Lestrade in Silver Earring. Holmes in Silver Earring also took me a while to
get used to. He sounded very pompous and too uppity, earlier in the game,
but he seems to have improved as he went along. Not as good as the Holmes in
Rose Tattoo though :) - he was more realistic sounding especially when he
was a bit irritated with Lestrade and Watson.
Still, I liked Silver Earring quite well. I am glad to have played it.
I only had trouble with that one timed sequence in the forest. It took me a
long time go get through it. Did it take you a while?

I think Holmes in Rose Tattoo sounds like Vincent Price. LOL

Hi Paula, so you thought Holmes in Rose Tattoo sounds like Vincent Price? I
don't remember thinking that when I played Rose Tattoo. I've played it a few
times. Holmes in Rose Tattoo had a strongm vert obvious English accent.
Vincent Price is American born, but travelled in Europe a lot when he was
young. He went to Yale. I must admit though, he never sounded like any other
American actor I've ever heard. He had a very distinctive, refined way of
talking, which could resemble some English accents to some degree. I loved
the way he talked and could listen to him for hours. He was a very good
actor. The movie I liked him best in was "House of Wax", but he made a lot
of good movies.

The game begins with Sherlock's brother Mycroft getting injured in an
explosion at his club.

In the stories, Mycroft worked for the British government in a covert
capacity as a sort of human computer. He wasn't a politician, however.

Hi again, Mary.

When I first started the game my first thought was "that sounds like
Vincent Price". Not so much that I actually thought it was him but his
voice just reminds me of him. He does have a very distinct voice. So
now we know we have something else in common. We both watch Vincent
Price movies. I agree, House of Wax was one of the best! I love that
movie. The House on Haunted Hill was on last night for Halloween.
That's another I like. So are you a horror movie person or just like
Vincent Price movies? I love old horror movies. Sometimes the newer
ones just go too far, I think. The old ones are the best.

I really want to play this game, but I am having a hard time winning
an auction for it at a reasonable price on eBay. :-(

I'm sorry you're having trouble finding it. Keep trying. It will be
worth it. It is a great game. I got mine through a trade at GameTZ.
Maybe you could find one that way.

I haven't read any of Shelock Holmes books, so I just went by the game.
After I played the game which was years ago not long after it came out, I
got more interested in Holmes and bought a few videos with Basil Rathbone as
Holmes as I particularly like him. There are DVD's of his movies available
now as well, but I haven't gotten around to getting them. I have enough DVD
movies for now but can't resist buying more of the older movies.

Well, I can't say if you would like it, but I did. If you can get it at a
reasonable price, its definitely worth playing. I haven't looked at the
price of it on Ebay for a long time.

Yes, I like some old horror movies. I've seen the House on Haunted Hill, but
its not one of my favorites. Vincent is very versatile and I like a lot of
his non-horror movies too, particularly "Laura", but I like Gene Tierney
very much
and Clifton Webb. I used to like those old Mummys Ghost movies,
Frankenstein,
Dracula. Bela Lugosi and Boris Karloff were good. Poltergeist, the first
one
was good and the best. I agree that the old ones are the best.

Last night I was busy trying to get Silver Earring going. I am near the end
of the game, and it crashes every time I try to go in a certain door. I
tried all my usual things, but nothing works. The game has run fine so far
except for one crash earlier in the game, but I was able to get past it. I
will have to write to Ubisoft Support I guess, to see if they can help.
I've only very occasionally had problems with games and never this late in
the game. The problem usually showed up when installing or early in the
game.
