Does anyone knows how to put Assault Rigs in 640x480 mode? I have tried running vesa driver (uv_config.exe) for my diamond Stealth dram 64 and it still does work in that mode. The manual doesn't even mentioned anything about 640x480 but the box does (it says Vesa compliant Cards recommended for HI-colour or 24 bit modes). Thanks...

HI-colour and 16-bit modes do not imply 640x480, they just refer to the number of colours. 16-bit is 64,000 colours. -- Rich

BAD NEWS!!! 320x200 is as good as it gets! I know...I know - the box says 640x480 24bit color but the LIE LIE LIE! I called Psygnosis and after the customary hour on hold I was told WHAT I SEE IS WHAT I GET to which I promptly replied - SORRY - YOU JUST LOST A SALE then I proceeded to return it to Electronics Boutique and bought Cyberia 2 instead (a much better game anyway) Up to this point I had been under the impression that PC versions of PlayStation games were better but NO WAY!!! That same day I also bought Destruction Derby and WipeOut. Now I have all 3 of these games for PlayStation so I know HOW GOOD they are (can be) so I had really high hopes for the PC versions. THEY ALL SUCKED!!!!!! All were 320x200 blocky graphics - no transparent smoke so when you fired a missile you lost your vision - CD-Audio music and WORST WORST of all the MAIN REASON I bought these games were all for MULTI-PLAYER and come to find out there is NO MODEM support - only serial link and network play - and Wipeout made you send in for the Multi-Player upgrade - yeah right!!! Without modem play - these games are as worthless for multi-player play as the PSX versions - after all who is gonna haul their PSX and 27" TV over to your house to play games - the same people who will bring over their Pentium and 17" monitor to play serial games - NO ONE!!!!! My advice to you is to return Rigs and STAY WAY from direct ports of home video games. Of course if you do not have a PlayStation THEN GO BUY ONE because the games cannot be beat or duplicated. In fact some PC games are being ported to PSX that are EVEN better than their PC counterparts - namely DESCENT - CREATURE SHOCK - JOURNEYMAN PROJECT and many more. I now wait to find out if a title is scheduled for release on PSX before I purchase the PC version because it will always be worth the wait for the PSX version. The vga version sucks as far as color and resolution. I don't like wasting my time with games without SVGA.

I've wanted Assault Rigs for the longest time (ever since it game out on the PSX) and for some reason, it has yet to show up in Canada. Wipeout and Destruction Derby took an extremely long time to show up here too. All made my Py..... I'm not even going to try and spell it. I hope this doesn't happen with the PC release of Twisted Metal. I really want that game too! Or has it already shown up in the US?

The PC port of Destruction Derby is quite good, Wipeout and Assault Rigs are not. But the games "cannot be beat"? Wipeout is good, DD and Assault Rigs are yawn-a-thons. Staying away from console ports should be a rule, why get one of those when you can get a game made specifically for the PC's abilities? Duke Nukem, Wing Commander IV, etc. And Creature Shock and Journeyman Project?!? ROTFL! Creature Shock is a streamed-video off of CD game, worthless. JourneyMan project is years old, it's a slow moving point and lick adventure you twit. And who cares about Descent when PC users are playing Descent _2_ right now in 640*480? How that modem play coming on the PSX? How about editing levels? How's the control with that gamepad? Yep, always wait for the PSX version eh? Idiot.

Idiot. > > Creature Shock is a totally remade Special Edition for PSX so don't flame what you don't know. Journeyman Project is a special Director's Cut which cannot even compare to the PC version. If you have Buried in Time you can see a QuickTime Movie of the PSX version that will blow you away. Descent was totally overhauled for PSX and looks tons better than the PC version - even looks better than Descent II and Interplay is working on a PSX port for Descent II which will undoubtable make the PC version pale in comparison. My control with the gamepad is just fine thank you - I have something called manual-dexterity - apparently something you lack. Modem Play....level editing.....hmmm...got me there but then who really cares.... As I recall the PSX -> PC ports so far do not have modem play - ONLY shitty link-up cable support - yeah right! My same friends who will lug their TV and PSX over to my house are just liable to haul their PC setup over too. Level Editing - big deal - I'm usually burned out on a game by the time I finish the built-in levels. Why prolong the agony when I can move on to something bigger and better. My original post was only warning consumers about PSX ports to PC and informing them of some cool upcoming titles for the PSX. Speaking of cool upcoming titles - DUKE Nukem 3D is officially announced as a PSX conversion of late 96/early 97 release. If the PSX version is as good as the PSX DOOM version then it should crush the PC version. I'm not cutting down the PC or PC Games - I have over 700 PC games including 220+ CDROM titles. I only have 18 PSX games - the numbers speak for themselves.

Duke 3D Reg'd will be out in 1-2 weeks for PC, and we'll probably getting a lot of good user hacked levels. Where will those be on the PSX? Sure the PSX may have some graphic improvements but the replaybility value will be nil..besides...anyone really wanting Duke3D will be getting it for their PC.. > >I'm not cutting down the PC or PC Games - I have over 700 PC games >including 220+ CDROM titles. Yeah... right... sadly consoles do not have enough memory to make games like DooM as good as the PC version. DooM for PSX was good but came nowhere near the original version. I have played Descent for PSX and franckly it doesn't even come close to Descent 2 on a Pentium. As for Duke... Duke on PSX will have a LOT less textures and by that time most of the PC gamers will be playing Quake anyway. Buy a PSX or a Saturn for games that are not available on PC like Tekken of Virtua Fighter! Dizzy * Sig under construction *

You said it dude, these console players always doggin the PC. When a console system comes out with some type of storage and expandability then it would be worth playing some games.

I'd like to see a Play-station do that. I can't believe people are so brainwashed by slick PSX adverts. The games (all of them) on the PSX are so _shallow_ in their concepts and ideas that their replay value, for anyone with a brain, is virtually nil. I recently tried Assault Rigs on the PC -- while it looked nice, sounded nice, etc., the conept behind it was so silly, so pointless (collect the jewels before you get blown up) it amounts to nothing more than a VR version of Pac Man. Who needs that? J.

I just have a quick question for the console-crowd: many of the games I'm gettin for my PC these days have memory requirements like 8MB's minimum, 16MB recommended, yet I hear consoles have only something like 4MB or RAM? How can consoles run games like Mechwarrior w/only 4MB of memory? DOS doesn't use up THAT much memory!

Doom for example, didn't have any arch-viles in the PSX version because there likely wasn't enough memory to allow for the ressurection of characters and it had fewer overall textures as well. TopGun on the PSX, while being a somewhat-simplistic simulation on the PC, is basically an Afterburner-clone shoot-em-up on the PSX. It's not the same as a PC having 2 megs of memory (which is what these consoles really have, 2 megs for main, 1.5 for video, 512k for sound) as many graphic routines are in ROM's, there's a very minimal OS, most (99%) games are in low-res (320*224/240), and programmers simply work harder. But it does restrict the type of game you can get, which is why they are usually tailored for arcade-style experiences. One PSX user was boasting that Duke was coming to the PSX (eventually- whatever that means), you will bet it will have quite a few features missing from the PC version- no matter how good the programmers are, There simply isn't enough ram to duplicate all the texures and animation in Duke, which is plenty. The PSX is a fine machine, but neither console nor PC can completely replace each other at this point.

Well, I just learned that some fans are making a remake of Assault Rigs. That's about all I know about the project. ;-) You might be better off going to the developer's website for more information. http://rigsdevelopment.wordpress.com As much as I love Usenet, even I am reluctantly forced to admit that c.s.i.p.g.a is not the place to go for /news/ about games anymore. It's still an awesome place to /discuss/ those games, however.
