OK, I've exhausted my feeble attempts to run P2 under XP. Does anyone else have trouble installing it (refuses to acknowledge my free HDD space), or is my blind spot causing me to lose sight of a simple solution? -SX Glory PS.: I apologize for my long absence, but believe me I'm back to stay.

If you manually make a directory of "c:\dark" first on the hard drive the game will install with out any problems. I have tried this on both fat32 and ntfs partitioned drives, works every time. By the way it can be any drive partition that is available not just C: Keith

I have a couple other questions about the game: The game I bought is called "Privateer 2 Deluxe Edition." What is it that makes this version "Deluxe?" What versions of the game are out there? The opening movies ran beautifully (unlike, say, Prophecy, where I can't seem to shake the Audigy movie-skipping glitch, since the game crashes when I turn off sound accelleration). However, in any interactive part of the game the sound is garbled and the game starts to run very slowly. This problem first arose in the bar dialogue choice, and persisted when I tried to use my PADD. Interestingly, if I hit "Esc" the game returns to a playable speed for a fraction of a second, before dropping back down. My system specs: P4 1.7 GHz WinXP SP1 GeForce 5200, with latest official drivers SB Audigy About 2-3 GB free HD space (which will likely be my next upgrade). Thanks!

Deluxe should indicate that it is a Windows version.

I've noticed a couple patches for P2, but I'm not sure if they're for the Deluxe Edition release or the original (or perhaps both). Likewise, any advice on getting the game to run smoothly?

Likewise, any advice on getting the game to run smoothly? All the stuff that is related to DOS or Windows. The DOS version can be slowdowned by using MOSLO, the Windows version cannot. The Windows version should be able to use USB joysticks I think. The Windows version should runs a bit more stable and should already have all the patches I think (I only own DOS versions, so I am not too sure here). -- A yer ago I kudnt spel jeanyus now I are won. Using the windows slowdown patch has almost completely cured my main problems running the game. However, I haven't had any luck getting my joysticks to run. When I first tried flight the joystick wasn't plugged in so I set the game to mouse control, and now I don't know how to set it to use joysticks. I have a gamepad hooked up to my USB port and a Wingman Extreme Digital connected to my game port, and neither one is responding at all. In another question, how can I figure out when trade routes will be profitable? I saw a news bulletin that Anhur has a strong ore market, and did well transporting ore there, but beyond that I haven't a clue what to transport that will make me any profit. People have mentioned other mission types...can you only get those through the core plot or are there random missions besides just cargo runs?

Windows slowdown patch? I haven't heard about that one. I know about the "turn down soundcard acceleration" hack, but I'd much prefer a patch so I don't have to reboot after playing P2 (necessary when turning soundcard acceleration back on). Link, please?

Note down the prices (also don't forget to note down quantity). They are
constant except in the case of news bullettins.
Crius Hermer Anhur is a very profitable (and save) triangle.

Note that news like that only stays valid for 3 landings IIRC.

You can get missions where you hire pilots.
You can get plot missions.
You can get missions when activating your SOS-comm system ('o' IIRC)
You can get missions that look like regular SOS missions (but they
usually do not offer money in their mail) while your SOS system is
deactivated (you get them mixed into the random SOS stuff if activated).
Take those at all costs - these are sideplots, whic only appear once,
but some of them are extremely valuable (you get stuff not buyable)

Are there some play balance problems in the game? It seems to me that the Skull light fighter is significantly more durable than it should be. I can't for the life of my kill one of these guys. I've taken out cap ships with just my guns, but it seems that with these guys my guns overheat before I can knock off even half of their shields. It seems to me that the Jincilla stats for the light and heavy fighters might be switched, since I can knock off the Jincilla heavy fighter (the Tacon) with no problems at all. I'm currently flying a Shaman with dual flux cannons, and I'm getting frustrated having to depend on my wingman AI to take out the Skulls at NAV 36 in the Senator's Daughter mission. Is this a problem anyone else has had, or am I just crazy?

The stats are probably correct and those critters aren't particulary hard to destroy. The problem is that you simply don't hit them 90% of the time. Any yeah - the skull is the most annoying ship in the game. You might want to try missiles for them instead... -- WINDOOF-GEWERKSCHAFTS-ERROR: Tariflich vereinbarte Arbeitszeit überschritten, Systemfunktionen eingestellt, Arbeitsgericht benachrichtigt. They seem to shake off any missle I shoot at them (I've tried Pythons, Brute Mk II's, and proximities).

I don't have XP on hand here, but the procedure should work. Try
creating a shortcut to install.exe to somewhere on your hard drive, then
right-click it {the shortcut} and click "prevent MS-DOS programs from
detecting Windows" or any equivelant thereof. Ditto for the actual game
executable.
