so in a moment of weakness I took advantage of the Black Friday deal and purchased Warlords. I should preface to say that my last serious wow playing was killing the Lich King. For Cat, I leveled up my main for a month and then stopped and for Panda I've only ever taken advantage of 7 or 10 day free trials to quickly level up via instances. A few months ago I was able to get through the Warlord introduction and start my garrison and had to stop as I could not ding 91. But now I'm in for a 3 months as I was intrigued by the garrisons but I'm a bit confused. Professions: I'm a leatherworker but it seems very daunting to try and level it up as the amount of materials needed (and time to farm) is extraordinary. I was expecting as per past to gather enough materials while questing to at least make a dent in leveling up but most of the mobs are not skinnable. The garrison: what seemed interesting at first has really turned into a time and money sink. I dinged 100 and have a few level 2 buildings. The routine when you log in takes almost a half hour and is super expensive. I know money comes easy and it should now that I'm max level and still have 3 zones to explore but the time sink to keep up your garrison vs. exploration doesn't allow for a casual experience. Instances. gear level caps to run the instances? I was level 99 and couldn't get into Skyreach because my gear level was 2 points too low. Problem was I was still questing in the low level zones so I wasn't getting any gear of the right ilevel. Wasn't until a garrison mission earned an appropriate gear reward that I dinged. Also, I still only see 4 instances in the Looking for Group interface. do more open up now that I'm 100? Will I have the gear? There is some neck item that I have that claims to reveal 'treasures' hidden throughout. What does this thing do? When do gems come into play? I haven't seen any gem slots on the gear I've acquired? Is my herb garden just AH fodder? Or do I need that if I build an building associated with a profession that uses herbs? I may have missed it but when do the visiting quest givers at your tavern start? Thanks

You will get most of your leather from your garrison itself. You need the trade station and the trader for this though. Once all your buildings are up and running you can spend resources on leather. Beware that the prices of leather goes up and down. So build the trade station and the lumber mill for resources and get them to lvl 3. > The garrison: what seemed interesting at first has really turned into > a time and money sink. Will I have the gear? More will show up. But if you want to do heroic dungeons you have to pass an obstacle called training grounds where you have to complete silver before you can enter any LF dungeon in heroic mode. You need a respec on specific classes (more or less impossible if you play arcane mage or kitty druid). I had to respec to frost on my mage if I wanted to complete silver. Anyhoo. You can do the time-walking dungeons though without having completed the training grounds and there shouldnt be any gear restrictions there. Time-walking dungeons drop 660-685 gear. Once you hit 100 forget questing and go straight for Tanaan. A quest for Tanaan will show up in your garrison. Do this quest before you go for Tanaan as this will open up the region (actually it IS open, but...). The mobs and rares in Tanaan drops 650 gear which can be upgraded to 695 (and with the latest patch it can be upgraded another 8 ilvl points). > There is some neck item that I have that claims to reveal 'treasures' > hidden throughout. Gem slots on gear is random. My best guess is that 5-10% of all dungeon and raid gear has gem slots. > I may have missed it but when do the visiting quest givers at your > tavern start? @100, /me thinks. -- Peter T.

It can be better at first to take the Barn, capturing animals is an easy source of leather which doesn't involve spending your limited garrison resources! I have the barn on both my leatherwrkers, although I'll likely switch it out for the trading post on one of other of them in time, as once you're established at max lvl it's far easier to just buy for resources than to go out trapping. >Once you hit 100 forget questing and go straight for Tanaan. Yep, Tanaan is the catchup mechanism which makes it almost pointless to bother opening up heroic dungeons unless you want quests from them. Just run round Tanaan, do some LR and bam, you've got gear miles higher than anything on offer in the dungeons... >> When do gems come into play? Yeah, VERY annoying to me as a jewelcrafter, gems don't really sell at all well nowadays because nobody has any sockets in their gear. Thankfully Legion is apparently getting some items with guaranteed gemslots again, I guess they realised that making a very fun profession not fun at all was a silly move!

Everything in my LFG is locked out except Skyreach. I can't even query for a random and get the bonus reward. I have to query for the specific dungeon. I went to Tanaan but find it a bit lethal at my current gear level or at least very slow to down the mobs. Plus, I'm not in a hurry and I need to earn cash so I don't mind going through the zone quests. One of the things I did before I previously quit was sell a good junk of my gold (and I was gold capped at the time) to a guild-mate. > > There is some neck item that I have that claims to reveal 'treasures' > > hidden throughout. I think I'm going to ignore this for a bit. That's supposed to happen; it's part of the questline designed to teach you that it *can* happen, and show you that you can just rebuild your ship and carry on - you get a better quality ship when you follow the quests and build a replacement. It's an annoying thing that can happen, but they actually just hotfixed it to reduce chances of losing ships on failed missions, should've been like that all along IMO. >> Anyhoo. You can do the time-walking dungeons though without having >> completed the training grounds and there shouldnt be any gear >> restrictions there. Everything in my LFG is locked out except Skyreach. I can't even query for a random and get the bonus reward. I have to query for the specific dungeon. Every weekend there is a bonus event; some weekends are Timewalking weekends, where you can queue up for older dungeons from past expansions. Since your gear is scaled down to the level of the original dungeon, there shouldn't be any gear lvl limits on those. >I went to Tanaan but find it a bit lethal at my current gear level or at least very slow to down the mobs. It is a bit, your best bet there is to find the treasures and kill any rare spawns you see, you'll get a few items there, which, even if not optimal, will help a lot. >Plus, I'm not in a hurry and I need to earn cash so I don't mind going through the zone quests. One of the things I did before I previously quit was sell a good junk of my gold (and I was gold capped at the time) to a guild-mate. It's worth doing the quests for the story and gold, but not so much for the gear, Tanaan gives miles better gear. But if you want to experience the expansion as it would've been at the start without the Tanaan catchup mechanism, go for it - it's rather more fun doing the quests without being overgeared :-)

Forgot to say: rare spawns share tag with anyone else around, so you can just wait for a better-geared person to start fighting them, and hit them yourself to get the tag and hopefully some loot - it's very useful when you're lowgeared! Same applies to world bosses, like Kazzak - if you find his spawnpoint up in the Throne of Kil'Jaeden, it's well worth killing him for a chance at high lvl loot. You will die, but there's a graveyard nearby; so long as you've hit him once you'll get the chance of loot :-)

Got ganked trying to participate so I just waited and looted some new gear. I've seen it mentioned before and I gather there is random 'treasure' around but not sure how to find it. what am I looking for?

Treasures are clickable ground objects. They're small, and often well
hidden, so they're easy to miss. They contain garrison resources and
sometimes a toy, pet, armor, or weapon.
After completing all the questlines in a zone, you can go to a vendor in
Ashran who sells treasure maps for each zone. Buying and using one of
these will mark all of that zone's treasures on your minimap.
Some follower missions also award the treasure maps.

I will not run anything under 80% success, and try for 92% or better, but at the start, you just build them until you start getting good rewards, And you do get good rewards. 5K Apexis, for example. Most of my ships don't match the attributes needed to make the missions successful. So a few further thoughts after over a week. I've run most of the heroics multiple times and have min 630 gear in all slots with a few 670 items just to get a feel for where I'm at. I'm almost out of zone quests as well except for Tanaan. what appeared to be a casual friendly pursuit is anything but. you can spend all your time gathering the mats to fulfill work orders. but then you aren't generating the funds needed to improve your stuff. I have no idea how you are supposed to pay for everything you need to buy to keep moving forward. New quests cost money.(wtf?) garrison plan upgrades cost money and then resources. New followers cost money. respeccing followers cost money. But it seems the one tried and true way of previously making money (selling mats on the AH) is no longer viable as everyone has an herb garden/mine. I know people have had a lot of time to get their stuff up to level 3, I'm just not seeing how it is viable. so previous answers here about getting my buildings up to level 3 don't seem achievable. How do you make money to overcome the high cost of everything? Can this even be done with an hour of play a night or even every couple of nights? How do you get your followers to have the attributes needed to complete the garrison quests successfully? I think I only have one of two of a certain type but most of the quests require it. another random observation: Most of the treasure items are located in a spot that either requires flying or is not compatible with WOW physics. Finally, I don't see that there is much to do in Tanaan. I have maybe one quest and there are a few blue quests. Still find the zone very lethal.

In general, I build a mix of ship types, as that makes the biggest contribution: if it needs a destroyer, putting a destroyer in means more than the other slots do. You can buy items to change the attributes on your ships, but it sounds from the rest of your post as though you'd rather not do that at present! By the way, a recent hotfix changed it so that if your success chance s 90% or higher, you are guaranteed to not lose a ship, even if it fails. Should've been that way from the start... >So a few further thoughts after over a week. Can this even be >done with an hour of play a night or even every couple of nights? Absolutely it can, perhaps not to the levels of those who play a lot, but you can easily make good money if you put the garrison to use. My main tips: - Build a salvage yard. Every mission you complete has a chance to give you a salavage crat, if you get the lvl 3 building, the crates contain lots of good stuff: greens, sometimes blues, occasionally epics, vendor trash, and upgrade tokens for your followers (which vendor for good money when you've upgradedyour followers enough to not want them any more). Greens don't sell for anything now unless they have good transmog models, but they vendor well. - Build an inn. You can use it to recruit followers with the Treasure Hunter trait, which doubles the amount of gold gained from a mission. Send followers on gold missions as much as you can, especially when they have the treasure trait; I aim to have 5-6 followers with it to cover different abilities. Multi-follower missions gives multiple bonus, if you use more than one follower with the trait. If you get the inn to lvl 3, you get more gold missions, with higher rewards. - Mats still sell, especially ores. Maybe not for as much as before, but they sell. Also if you build a jewelcrafting building and set a follower to work there, he has a daily quest which gives you 230-280g, sometimes it's not worth it as he asks for stuff with high mats, but the days you can trade 20 ores for 250+g are great! - If you like running through old raids, then vendoring the drops in those will get you a fair chunk of gold. >How do you get your followers to have the attributes needed to complete the garrison quests successfully? >I think I only have one of two of a certain type but most of the quests require it. I used the inn recruiter: if I was short of a particular type of follower, I recruited for that type. Then, as you lvl followers up, eventually they reach epic quality and gain a 2nd ability, this helps a lot with covering different quests. I never bought the reroll tokens, but you occasionally get them from missions and those are a useful way to change a follower who's got abilities you don't really need. >another random observation: Most of the treasure items are located in a spot that either requires flying or is not compatible with WOW physics. A few are like that, most are perfectly accessible. Nagrand went overboard with the glider treasures; those are just irritating, but most are fine to get, just take some finding. >Finally, I don't see that there is much to do in Tanaan. I have maybe one quest and there are a few blue quests. Still find the zone very lethal. Yeah, the blue quests are the point of the place. It's a bit dull, but better than what we had before...

I've just now completed 10 shipyard missions but it is still slow going as my attributes don't match most of the available missions and I can't build any more. I've got the Inn and have recruited some new followers. Had to deactivate a couple too as I was at the max after getting Leroy. I also just now got the achievement that allows me to build level 3 buildings. I assume these are purchasable plans somewhere? Do I need the books to purchase the plans or gold? I also just got the quest for the timewalker dungeons. Do I queue up for those using LFG? I'm still playing around with some of the other buildings. The Barn gives interesting quests if a bit repetitive. And I'm going to use my new follower from the barracks for a bit. So I'll try out the lumber yard / salvage yard some point later.

Heh, so I only realized this week that those quests in your garrison HQ and in Tanaan 'rewarded' Apexis crystals and didn't 'cost' Apexis crystals.

No, it's one that requires you to get a ship enhancement, iirc. Anyway, you don't have to only do 100% quests. Anything around 80% is fine. If you happen to get a ship destroyed, simply rebuild it. -- Wally: That's my nickname, "Waly" with one el. Dilbert: Who calls you that? Wally: Most people, they just don't realize it.

Wally: Most people, they just don't realize it. Yeah, what I didn't know until yesterday was that I could decommission ships. I had gotten the battleship plans but had no way to build one until I decommissioned a transport. What I'm finding is that there is a lot to take in all at once with the maturity of the expansion. But I don't mind going at my own pace. So while I understand I should build a level 3 salvage yard, it's going to take me some time to actually open 100 pieces of salvage. Another thing I haven't been able to trigger is a garrison invasion. Is this just another thing that will trigger once I've worked through something else?

Yes. I think I got my first shortly after upgrading to a level 3 garrison, but I do not know what event specifically triggered the quest being available. Oh, one other thing about Salvage, you get a lot from running instances and it comes in two flavors, green backs and wooden crates. Opening 100 should take very little time. Ah yes, I'd forgotten that requirement! Those achievements are accountwide, if you have an alt high enough lvl to build a salvage yard as well, but if you don't, doesn't matter, just get to it when you can :-) At the very least, it's a good motivator to do missions you don't otherwise need anything from, as you can still get crates from them. >Another thing I haven't been able to trigger is a garrison invasion. Is this just another thing that will trigger once I've worked through something else? Invasions are a total pain. They trigger when you've killed a LOT of mobs in the lvl 100 areas, but not including Tanaan. I found the best way to trigger them was to bother doing the daily from the town hall each day (even though Tanaan is a far better source of Apexis these days), because completing the daily gives a chunk of credit towards an invasion. They appear to work like a hidden version of the reputation system, where each mob you kill gives "rep" and completing a daily gives a big chunk of "rep", and when you reach the hidden trigger amount of "rep", an invasion happens. That resets you down to 0 "rep" and you can repeat the process. There's multiple "factions" of invasions, different areas give credit with different "factions" and you can easily trigger multiple invasions at once if you're quite active in many areas. But now Tanaan exists, none of us really have any reason to do the lesser zones, so invasions are very limited. I'm suspecting I'll never get the achievement for completing 50 of them...

That's around 705 as I have no plans to run HC with a pug. Mostly empowered baleful at 2/2 with the LW crafted helm at stage 5 (60 more felblights? no thanks). I am not aware of any way to upgrade Warforged gear other than with valor. Just curious but why is there no LFR for HFC? I've done all of LFR highmaul and I like that you can segment it out (an hour of time) even if you have to deal with the typical LFR issues. As for followers, what is the maximum gear level I should be shooting for? Should Harrison be the first one I gear up past 660? I am slowly accumulating gold but I am wondering what this means for the next expansion. How will someone that jumps in with a level 100 boost afford anything in Legion if they skipped the months of garrison rewards? I am finding on my server the transmog market to be a bit slow. I do not seem to be able to sell my BOE gear near what TSM suggests.

I *THINK* Harrison promotes every follower in the mission to his level?
If so then yes.
One reason I stopped was I needed one mission to get the last 6??
Harrisons on alts and it did not show during The Long Month of Sighs

That is what tokens are for. Someone must be buying them.
F2P games now are getting to $100 a month just to keep up with
patches if you want to get into the Toxic high end.
WOW is really at the low cost end. $100 buys a lot of gold.
Also WOW can be pretty darn civilised compared to some F2P games.
If they paid $1000 for their high end tier gear in progressive lumps
over a few weeks and you snipe them first time the new tank hits a map,
*TOXIC TWELVES*.
They could take the time to play the game.
It is a game and it has no retirement plan so no real need to be max
level and gold cap. It IS supposed to be Fun2Play :-)
Saying that I haven't played for ages, more work than fun.

If you have the legendary ring, you can buy an item to upgrade it by three
ilevels from the Order of the Awakened vendor in your faction's base in
Tanaan. It can be upgraded all the way to 795.
It costs 1250 valor per, but isn't limited to just two upgrades.

Haven't tried it out yet. :) Started working on an alt warlock but having a hard time with the rotation and having no luck getting past the silver challenge. _____________ I found silver proving grounds the hardest with my warlock up till now and I did it on quite a few chars. Problem was my gear didn't have enough haste. So instead of doing it immediately after hitting 100 as I did with most chars, I geared up through tanaan and lfr. Still it was a miracle I got through when at the very end I hit the last mob a millisecond within the time. I have 4 legendary rings now but for one char I have to get shipyard completed first before getting the quest to defeat archimond to 'really complete it'. But I'm taking another break from wow again, I never could just play sometimes so have to freeze my account now and again to have some kind of life besides wow :) SF

I geared up a bit (I was almost instantly able to get all ilvl 650+ baleful gear from tokens saved up) but still had a hard time. Tried it a few times and failed and then finally after failing 6 times on step 8 in a row I finally got the last guy with a few seconds to spare. I was so anxious I was shaking. Also, I'm a little concerned that the shipyard mission for my heirloom agi ring hasn't reappeared after it failed at 92% a week or so ago.
