Getting started in WoD?

I've been looking for a decent guide to How To Play WoD, without results.

I've got MoP 25 dailies stacked on my destro lock, who is now at 562
with the Garrosh BoA - he'll be going in first. There's some question if
the stacked dailies will (1) get erased (2) be seriously nerfed (its
happened before), or give full XP. At any rate, it will take less than
10 minutes to hand them in, so it's probably worth it unless (1).

My plan is to hand in the dailies, getting a little boost in XP, then
head for the portal. I'll hearth to Stormwind, take the portal down
to blasted lands, then through to the new area.

...and thats where I run out of ideas. I know I should start a garrison,
but have no idea what that involves. I assume I'll start quest running,
and queue for anything that can be queued. My two main toons have 40-50k
gold each. I'm keeping the lock in inns as much as possible, to build up
rested XP.

Any suggestions from folk whove been in the beta?

Drop the dailies. You'll get more xp in the same time by just doing the
new content. Any "boost" will be mental and nothing more.

Just follow the quests - to begin with, when you go through the Dark
Portal there is an "intro" experience, a short questline which every
character *must* do to reach Draenor proper. It'll seem very easy, as
it's tuned for boosted characters, who'll get their abilities as they
go through it (like the Death Knight starter zone), but it's a nice
little intro to what's going on and some of the names you'll see more
of later on, anyway. At least, nice the first time, probably just
plain annoying by the 10th alt :-P I have heard rumours that this area
is phased to reduce the numbers of players in it at one time, I very
much hope that really is true, as on my server, there'll be 4000+
Horde all doing it at once.... tbh I fully expect Eastern Kingdoms to
crash multiple times before midnight, as we all pile into the Dark
Portal area waiting for it to go live.

When you finish this chain, you're taken to Shadowmoon Valley
(Alliance) or Frostfire Ridge (Horde), and the quests continue through
the first setting up of the garrison (not that many quests, 10-15 mins
depending on how overcamped it is - so, on my server at launch,
that'll be about an hour of fighting for tags) - once it's built, then
you get a bunch of breadcrumbs off to other areas. At least, you do on
Alliance, Horde was a bit more on rails at this point (branching out
more later on) if I recall rightly, but it may have changed since I
did it, as that was several months back.

After that, just quest as normal, instance as normal, garrison doesn't
need babysitting, you don't *have* to jump back the second you see
"mission completed" pop up on your screen, but it's nice to drop in
when you're passing by. You get a 2nd hearthstone connected directly
to the garrison, so it's easy to port over there for a few minutes
when you reach a natural break in questing.

You'll get a breadcrumb quest leading back there every 2 lvls, which
then leads you onto the next zone, so you can safely ignore those
until you're ready to move on to a new zone, if you want to finish the
one you're in first. Depends if you rather do the highest possible
content, or the completist route; for me it'll be the completist
route, doing every quest in each zone on the way up, I hit 100 in
Spires of Arak (96-98 zone) on beta, it'll probably be even earlier
this time if I can bring myself to try any dungeons!

Btw don't just quest, explore too: there's LOTS of hidden rares,
treasure, etc etc, giving exp, garrison resources, items, I found
myself levelling really slowly on beta as it was too much fun checking
every little out of the way area for treasure!

I assume he meant that they're already completed and are ready to hand in.

Probably still get more exp by getting on with the new stuff rather
than wasting time flying around Pandaria doing handins! Especially if
you're on at midnight, since the 10-20 mins lost doing handins will
mean you're very much stuck in the crowd which means huge tagging
battles, lag and probably server crashes. I always aim to get ahead of
the crowd as early as possible for playability, so time wasted at the
start is not good!

Although I'm really going to find it hard to get ahead of the crowd
this time, the new levelling style of exploring is perfect for me, but
also slower... dammit!

On the plus side, most of the questing experience was very
crowd-friendly in beta, a lot of the object-based quests are now fixed
objects which respawn *instantly* and are usable once-only, so no
camping spots praying to be the first to click, as eveeryone gets
their own, effectively (sometimes a slight delay waiting for others to
finish using the object, but at least you don't have to go hunting for
them and trying to beat hundreds of other people to them). Named quest
mobs are all shared tag, and non-named respawn fast (too fast in some
cases, if you're squishy, I actually found in crowds I was more
frustrated by chain-insta-respawns almost killing me than by not being
able to tag things!). So it seems in many cases lessons have been
learned about quest bottllenecks.

Exactly. I'm actually going to drop a couple, so I have room in the
quest log for the event starter.

I have 8 klaxxi, 5 at the nearby garrison, 3 at ChiJi, 5 at Halfhill,
and 3 at the ship. I'll set the hearthstone in SW, and log out in the
Klaxxi inn.

When I start, it will take only a few seconds to determine if the
xp is worth it - if not, I hearth, and head for WoD. I expect I can
do all the handins in under 10 minutes.

Thats a good point, but with no beta experience, I fully expect to fall
behind those who've been there before anyway.

So, the change is at server midnight?

True, I'll fall behind myself because I'm one who likes to explore and
read the quest text, enjoy watching cinematics etc - I just intend to
play through the night and at least get ahead of the majority of the
crowd, since I do prefer questing when it's not a massive fight to tag
anything :-)

>So, the change is at server midnight?

Yep, as I recall, the last couple of expansions it just activated at
midnight, autoquest appeared in log, etc, no relogs needed. Although
the server then crashed within about a minute as everyone tried to do
it at once :-P This time out I believe the best place to go to Blasted
Lands, the quest should tell us to speak to Khadgar who is in front of
the Dark Portal (in the bit currently full of elites, where the NPCs
for the old entering Outland quest were), so, that'll be 4000+ people
all in a small bowl, plus elites everywhere until they despawn at
midnight, no doubt a bunch of bored people killing said elites with
spells everywhere.... oh yeah we'll kill the server a few times lol.

I was online for the MoP drop - the Ally players had to kill some ships
from aircraft - not sharable. I saw a solid band of hundreds of aircraft
looping near the ships, and it took 15 minutes just to get through that
part, the farming on the ships was so intense.

I figure I'll try turning in the dailies as I described; but if
the xp is seriously nerfed, I'll hearth to the Mage Quarter,
pop through the portal to Blasted Lands, and be at the dark portal
within a minute of the drop.

Hopefully my graphics card is up to the crowds.

BTW: It looks like all the North American servers are going live with
WoD at 12:00 PST - that's 3 AM EST. Server clock doesn't matter.

Ouch, I heard about that one, was relieved I was on Horde as it'd have
been a really bad issue for us, very Horde biased server, to the point
where I'm wishing I was levelling my Alliance alts first as Shadowmoon
Valley will be lovely and quiet, even on launch day!

Ah that makes sense, sorry for the dodgy info then - the European
servers are all in the same timezone, so for us it is always midnight
server time, oops!

It goes live 6:30pm in oz, I expect quite a few server crashes.
They may be new big iron servers having just logically relocated, or old
spare generic junk, this should test them.
4:00 pm Perth
5:30 pm Darwin
6:00 pm Brisbane
6:30 pm Adelaide
7:00 pm Sydney, Melbourne, Hobart, Canberra
9:00 pm New Zealand

Gah, with the relocation there is still no access to armo(u)ry or a lot
of the offline apps for oceanic.

Clear up Pandaria.
Turn them in, clear the log.
You could wait for the xp , there is no guarantee there would be any
more xp in the wodlag furball and you may come out a few minutes worth
of wod grinding in front.
Or maybe not.
20 minutes over the next weeks followed by the next 2 years without xp,
won't make a lot of difference.

And they go very quick as long as it isn't lagging.
Never seen an xpac launch, don't plan to bother again.
If that rate keeps up you possibly could be 100 in a day, if you had
nothing better to do.
There were lvl 92-3s running around after 3 hours, I think they did
dungeons fairly quickly, they are accessible almost immediately. ( if
not actually immediately)

first simple quests give a timeless 496->512 equivalent weapon and some
similar level gear so a 483 new 90 would have no problems at all

If you get booted before garrison stone is set the old cata portal area
has a portal to shadowmoon valley near the garrison creation area.
Garrison is all rest zone, it has a mailbox.

It looks like you have to log on an alt to start rested xp accumulating.

It was very variable on my server, I never realised before that the
game must be phased out into subzones or something, because you could
move from one part of a zone to another and it'd change from massive
lag to completely fine! Weird, but was definitely happening in
Frostfire Ridge, at one point Bladespire Hold and surrounding area was
awful, Wor'gol and around it was just fine, and the difference was
visible as soon as you crossed the subzone border.

There was a lvl 100 on my realm at 4.30am (my time), that'd be 5.5
hours after launch. Crazy, considering at that point msot of us had
just about managed to fight through the lag and dc's to make lvl
91....

Heard about those before it even launched us/oceania

(was reset)

banned for an exploit?
If he didn't use any replications, if it was grinding and planning I
really don't see why.

Have fun, explore the world, find hidden secrets, gain levels, that is
what it used to say on the tips screen.
just get banned if you explore too far, actually find anything hidden or
move too fast.

I still go with the principle, IF it was done by hard graft and planning
it shouldn't have attracted a ban.

But it is looking like a staged publicity stunt.

Well, it is friday 5:35 and it just booted badly for the first time,
before it was still logged on.
Nagrand is full Position in Queue :2483
   Estimated time: 573 minutes

I wasn't on nagrand and no other servers are listed on change realm.

I am actually kind of enjoying my first full xpac release, the whole
'when I was young we had to walk up hill 20 miles in the heat..'

Now
Nagrand is full Position in Queue :2422
   Estimated time: 641 minutes
tell a lie
   Estimated time: 1441
   1511
   513
   604
I am guessing the estimated time isn't anything to rely on :-)
  woooo 95 75 93 105 208...got my hopes up there, silly

For us it was 7pm server time, which is from 9pm to 4pm local time, with
a bit more variation for states from north to south having daylight
savings or not.
I had the one I was going to experience it on parked in stormwind, Blizz
had position Katgars?? in major cities after eu.
I flew one of the second rank chars to Blasted lands to take some
snaps, lag wasn't all that bad.
Parked in the portal and looked back, a huge blur of blue on the ground.
someone else was taking pics and suggested everyone mount and spread
out. Frame rate just died as the skies just FILLED with flying mounts
and I don't think that was even a major fraction given the blue halo on
the ground :-) That scene on the other side of the portal with the orc
armies approaching? NOTHING :-)

So I was down in the mob, taking a picture from a distant camera down
on the empty zone around the NPC at 6:50pm
    and the quest popped up!
Oh what the heck? click...and the second undergeared wave went in first.
It was a cakewalk until the pre-garrison lagfest, so just repeated the
working parts on the planned flag carrier. Then another, by then it was
thinning enough to actually interact with the NPCs and tree flags.
Fewer people popping trains as well.
