[Q]: SW to use for Map design

Hi,

so there is at least _some_ life in here ! ;)

I was wondering if there is a short 'n' quick summary, what software to
use to design a map, other than 3ds...

I am used to blender, and would like to make a "walk-around" of a
buildings cluster to show visitors around. And using UnrealED to do the
architectural parts seems to be a PITA to me... (Well, I am used to an
other UI approach for construction-like software)

Alternatively I'd appreciate hints to (SORRY) other engines also...

Thanks a lot, and sorry for the NOISE CAUSED ! (SCNR!! ;) )

At one time there was a movement to port the UT engine to displaying an
architectural display to showcase buildings. This was used as the first
"BIG" thing:

http://www.fileplanet.com/22623/20000/fileinfo/VRND---Notre-Dame-Cathedral

It's a virtual tour of Notre Dame cathedral that uses the unreal engine. You
don't need UT installed to run this as it is independent. I rather liked
where this was heading but it all just sort of died. I'd guess it was
because the texture creating and loading was such a PITA. I messed with
UT2K4 editor for a while and I'd loved to have seen this project done on
that engine but it didn't happen.
I'm not sure what is out there in the autocad community, but I'd wager they
have a much better system of doing what you want but I'd also guess there is
a pretty steep learning curve to go with it.

Sounds like you're talking about building a walk around scene with any
kind of engine. What about Vue? Carrara? Could Bryce 5 (free
unrestricted version) be used for something like that?

But sounds like you're needing something where you can create a "level"
in, the load it in a game engine and leave it running. So wouldn't
just about any game level editor do this?

Yes, close to what I had in mind. But I also want to have some
"interactivity" in it. Like left alone for 5 minutes it "walks" by
itself, and if some one want to know how to get to point B from where
he/she is right now, or just "explore" the site, it comes out of kiosk
mode and you can use keys/joystick to navigate around.

I have the architectural data ready in DWG, and am toooo lazy to do it
once again in UnrealED, let alone it uses another approach (BSP) which
is very unused and somehow irritating to me yet.

Does anyone know, if the new "Unreal * 2007" will still have an editor
bundled, any details known about it ??

Thanks again for your patience...

Yes, it will ship with all tools used to make it. (From an interview with
Mark Rein)

QL !! I am getting somehow familiar with the Editor. I think I might
find a way do convert my data to be of use to UtED. Is there more
specific information available, than that on their so called "developer"
Homepage ? (I strongly dislike withheld information available to signees
only !!)

Thanks for the info !
