After all this time I went and read the readme file in the original Thief2 file. First paragraph said: You have probably played other first person games where the main object of the game is to kill all of the bad guys. Thief 2 isn't one of those games. Garrett, the character you play in Thief 2, is a master thief whose success is based on cunning and stealth, not on fighting skills. When you see an enemy in Thief 2 your first thought should be, "How can I sneak by this guy ?", not "How can I kill this guy ?". In short the enemy should never know you've been there. Interesting to know the guys who made the game wanted you to ghost instead of kill.

> In short the enemy should never know you've been there. As long as the game is based around cleaning a place of its loot, the enemy will always know you're there. Plus if you actually use the tools the games give you, there are the extinguished torches, napping guards, vandalized curtains, unlocked doors, moss growing all over the kitchen floor, etc. I don't think we've yet seen the ideal stealth game that really embraces the no-trace ethic.

Rainbow Six had some missions that would fail if you were detected or guards were alerted. That Rainbow Six and sequels had some missions that would fail if you were detected or guards were alerted. Those were essentially "no-trace" missions. They weren't much fun though (especially the first sequel), mostly because when you failed you had to start the mission from the beginning, which got extremely tedious after several days of being unable to get past the mission. It also wasn't very Thief-y in that there weren't many good hiding places, no secret entrances or crawling through the attic, and you would be instantly spotted if you leaned around a corner to see if you could make a dash to the next building. Theoretically you had the tools necessary in a heartbeat sensor that didn't help much since guards outside its range could spot you, and a second team mate who could spot for you but was hard to manage as a single player. But at least the designers made the attempt. -- Darin Johnson

One of these days I'm gonna try and ghost a mission. Just for fun.

The missions I have on hold right now, you can't ghost the whole mission. Personally, I prefer to bonk 'em on the head, then snoop around. The most difficult mission in Thief 2 for me was "Casing the Joint."

The only one that have attempted lately is "A Smuggler's Request". Everything went well until I returned to the town near the end and a guard that wasn't there in the beginning suddenly appeared in the bar and saw me. Ghost over!!! Damn!!! > D.
