After all this time I went and read the readme file in the original Thief2
file. First paragraph said:

You have probably played other first person games where the main object of
the game is to kill all of the bad guys. Thief 2 isn't one of those games.
Garrett, the character you play in Thief 2, is a master thief whose success
is based on cunning and stealth, not on fighting skills. When you see an
enemy in Thief 2 your first thought should be, "How can I sneak by this guy
?", not "How can I kill this guy ?". In short the enemy should never know
you've been there.

Interesting to know the guys who made the game wanted you to ghost instead
of kill.
