So, Blizzard has, in their infinite wisdom, decided to keep the playerbase segrated by region (US, Europe, Asia), because they're a bunch of retards. Just thought I'd let you know(if anyone's reading this lol) that I'll probably be making my account for the US realm instead of Euro as there's a bunch of other peeps I'll also be playing this game with, and the only way to switch realms is to buy another CD-key. Welcome to the year 2010, where you'll find games lacking features they had 12 years ago! ...Wait, holy shit I'm old :v

There were a few posts on the SC2 forums about everyone just buying the US version. Certainly, if I live in Oz/NZ I think that getting a US version is the only way to go. I mean, when I play Team Fortress 2, or most Steam games, I can play worldwide, USA, Canada, Eastern Europe, Russia no problem.

And how shitty is the latency?

I'm pretty sure Aussies already belong to the US region, as is the case with World of Warcraft, unless Blizardz have finally erected local servers for them. Anyway, I remember when the EU version of World of Warcraft was launched, the FAQ said that support for playing with people across regions was being worked on and would be coming in the near future. 5-6 years later, the only thing that's happened on that front is that the blurb in the FAQ concerning this topic has been stealthily removed. I would like to take this moment to say fuck you, Blizzard, for making everything ten times harder than it fucking has to be!

I've read that if you are in the EU, if you want to play on US servers, you'll have to buy the US version of the game.

I concur to your fucking Blizzard. I'd do the same even though I have no idea what is going on. Screw them for taking so long to release SC II. Also I notice that there aren't any discussion on Asian servers or I'd take it that the Asian servers are as good as non-existence even though Koreans are world ass kickers of Blizzard games? So fuck Blizzard again -- Steven Ung The Perogative Asian

But ordering the game from overseas is gonna take a couple weeks. And you'll probably have to do it through ebay or something, most US outlets don't ship to Europe. And you'll have to use a dummy bnet account as opposed to the one in your name that you add your other Blizzard games to, probably. >>And how shitty is the latency? > >Shittier than Iccup/LAN-latency modified Brood War if that says >anything. Better than vanilla BW. Well, I was hoping for the amount in milliseconds. If it rises above 300, good micro is gonna be out the window and you're not gonna be able to play the game competitively at a high level.

Lan latency BW is around 100 ms assuming your connection to the opponent isn't higher, regular b.net BW was somewhere in the 300-400 ms range or so and obviously you couldn't really do any fancy shit like muta micro or move-shoot and even goon dancing was a huge pain in the ass. Supposedly the US b.net ran at something retarded high when they started out, but it's been fixed. Still not as fast as BW with the lan patch, though - Someone on TL made a test, but I can't remember what their conclusion was out of memory.

It's not a technical limitation, it's a software one, same as if you play unmodified SC1 on vanilla b.net, you will have this 300-500 ms command latency even if you both run normal high-speed low-ping connections, because that's just the way the game is programmed to work in that mode. FWIW I have no problem doing gay micro on the US servers myself in SC2. In other games I tend to ping like 150 to east coast locations usually.

The original SC maybe, because it ran on caveman technology and they had to mash two stones together to start up the server. And most Blizzard servers are on the west coast. Where, at least on WoW, you get 300ms at best (if you modify your network packet settings - about 400+ if you don't). I too would like to play with people from other regions, but if you're playing against people your own skill level in a close game, and they have 250ms less latency than you, you're gonna lose every time, unless they have an aneurysm while they play.
