Millenium II 4 MB
Awe32 sound

Can only run game at 640 X 480 over win95, and sound is choppy at times,
video is choppy at times, usually at the wrong time. I can display game
at 1024 X 768 but game runs slightly choppy and music does not sync at
all. I should also add that I am in lamo level mode so not many ememies
about. Graphics are more colorful than quake, but the choppiness takes
away from overall experience.

Anyone else???

Hexen 2 Demo becomes unplayable when there are 2 or more monsters
at certain areas....seems people have the same problem in the full
version,
not a game I am likely going to buy...I can only hope that quake 2, Jedi
Knight
and Unreal don't have these problems.

Yeah... I got the demo and whenever I encounter an enemy the game gets so
choppy it's totally unplayable. I've tried it on two differemt machines.
One with an AMD K5 133 and the other with a Pentium 150. The pentium is
slightly better than the AMD but not enough to make me willing to shell out
the $39.95 for the full version.

Also the demo version doesn't recognize the AMD proce3ssor as being a
Pentium class cpu.

I've heard that Raven is working on a patch. So at least Microsoft isn't
the ONLY ones releasing betas as a finished product.

That just proves that you need a 3DFX voodoo card. Intel puts out 100
versions of the Pentium chip and put out ads with those idiotic
dancing guys in shiny suits. But the fact is who gives a shit about
upgrading their pentium cpu anymore? No pentium cpu can do what a 3DFX
card can. Also the MMX and AGP technologies are also bullshit.
I have an Orchid Righteous 3D card with the 3DFX voodoo chip and Hexen
2 has totally smooth sound and graphics with it.
You also should have at least 32 megs ram for hexen 2.

Thank god for 3DFX because we used to have to spend huge amounts of
money for pentium upgrades and motherboard upgrades to run 3D games
faster.

My isn't this post a wonderfully uninformed peice of drivel! So in
several years you're still going to be using that P166? No, you
won't, not for games. Because the faster the processor gets, the more
computational power your computer has. And the more computational
power, the more effects will be put in. Like parametric curves and
fractal generated environments... these are all dependant on a
computer with a fast CPU. THe 3DFX only accelerates rasterization...
of the stuff that the CPU calculates.

Point in case, I put a Righteous 3d on a Cyrix P133+ (the old ones
with the REALLY bad FPU). It improves speed... but in areas that don't
have huge amounts of polygons. You can see the framerate drop when it
gets into moderate areas, and just die in complex ones.

And AGP is not bullshit.... calling AGP bullshit is somewhat like
calling a PCI motherboard bullshit... AGP is accelerated Graphics
Port. Future video cards will plug into this instead of a PCI slot.
AGP accelerates it even further....

Next time put just a little thought into your posts ok?

I've got:
AMD K6-200 (running at 225 with 75MHz bus speed)
2MB Matrox Millenium
AWE64
64 MB EDO RAM
4MB Diamond Monster 3D

Running the game at 640x480 in GLHexen 2, no choppiness, good gameplay, no
problems whatsoever.

My system has:

Pentium 133
40 mb ram
millenium
cheap Pro Audio sound card
3DFX card - Orchid Righteous 3D

The graphics are smooth. The sound is not choppy.

Come on, guys. Ziff-Davis and the Computer Shopper have got us all
smoked. Many of the AMD K6 and Cyrix 6x86 chips don't get recognized as
pentium class cpu's because of the smaller FPU.
The way that I understand it is, all of the business-type programs
depend on the instruction stack more than the FPU, so the meat in the
Cyrix and the K6 got put there. That way, they score really high in
WinBench( a Ziff-Davis product ) and look really good in the Computer
Shopper reviews (also a Ziff-Davis product).
When I take a big spreadsheet home from work and use it on quattro, it
SCREAMS! (I have a 6x86 w/ 16 meg ram. Not much.) If I play quake, now
that's a different story. I am stuck with 320x200 for internet play, and
I can't even run the Hexen II demo without getting "H2 caused an
invalid page fault in module H2.exe at 014f:00423cbc" within five
minutes.

Yeah, I'm biased. But that still doesn't explain why you 233mmx guys
are having a problem. You should be all over H2.

(What was my point again?...)

Now then people, I had a p166mmx but got bored - it ran quake a little
better than my buddies' straight 166's, so with a nice big heat sink
and s printout from Tom's hardware guide I got me a P208MMX (been
running without errors for 4 months now). And suddenly I could run
quake better than all my friends who had bought 200's after me.
HAHAHHA.

Until they went out and bought 3Dfx's.

Was it smooth? yup.

Was it 640x480? Uhuh. (I had been happy with 640x400 at high frame
rate)

Was it texture filtered? Can fish swim?

Oh, and they had transparent water.

Now we have all got HEXEN II, I run in 512x384 and suffer when
displaying large areas of transparencies, and my (ex) freinds still
run it on their 166's in 640x480 all the bells and whistles and no
jerkiness.

I might get an Apocalypse 3Dx.

I think its time to face up the fact that to run the new 3d games that
ware coming out for christmas you will need
1) a top notch 3d card
2) a big processor (p133 + for the first batch, until the programmers
get cleaver, then maybe a p2 300, with an AGP 3d card etctetctetc)

Oooh, I just read sommet from Jahn Carmack, to parraphrase:
Trinity won't be out for at least eighteen months. The level of
hardware REQUIRED is not yet common enough to ensure a commercial
success if released now.
(source Digitiser C4 teletextP171)

Never mind that most pc of today cant even run hexen II well. It is a
sign of things to come........

Actually...I'm running an AMD K5 133 and had all the choppy sound breaking
up and can't play this game stuff going on until someone offered some
helpful advice. (That would be as opposed to all the "Your stupid why don't
you buy a Pentuim" stuff).

The advice was as follows...

Run the game in a dos window with the switch -heapsize 20000

The entire line looks like this...

h2 -heapsize 20000

Using this method the game is quite smooth.

Now, back to our regularly scheduled flaming...

:)

My system:
Intel P200 non-MMX
32MB FastPage Ram
Diamond Stealth 2MB DRam
Cheap SB-16 Clone

My game runs fine with no problems at 320x200, but for some reason, when
I switch to any other full screen mode, Direct Draw seems to think that
it needs to run in a window. Same think happens with win-quake. But if I
run normal Quake with the -winmem 24 argument, I run at 1024x768 at a
virtually butter smooth framerate.

Yet another argument that DirectX sucks.
