okm I stated in my previous article that I had and AWE32 well I kinda
jumped the gun on that one. I am planning to purchae a new sound card this
week but i am a little unsure of which to get. The three options I have
given myself are as follows: Soundblaster AWE32, ROLAND soundcanvas, or
the new card by TURTLE BEACH. My main worry is supportability with future
games (ie: QUAKE). I have already ordered an AWE32 at Compucentre. I just
want to be sure that if I buy it I will have made the right choice. I
would really appreciate some input on this one. Would the AWE 32 be able
to digitally compress speech for the proposed chat mode on QUAKE???
Oh well hope to hear from you all soon! Bye for now!

I heard there was no better sound card than Gravis Ultra Sound. I don't have
it, unfortunately, so I can't back this up. Supposedly gives awesome 3-d
sound.

Actually, one of the id guys said that Quake will only support true
3D sound on one card, which I believe is still being developed.

Well, the GUS may not have an on-board surround decoder, but it certainly can
support surround sound... Hell, anything capable of stereo can.

Perhaps you would like to explain "true" 3D with 2 speakers ? There is no
such thing. True 3D is only accomplished with Surround Sound, something whci is
NOT supported by the GUS. What the GUS does use us binormial Sound Enhancement.
I'm not too sure what it is, but I read it in the GUS SDK. This is also
a 2D stereo enhancement. To be honest, I don't know how well the GUS 3D effects
stack up but SRS has been around for a LONG time (5-10 years?) and has been
proven technology. Qsound has also been here for awhile but I haven't been

Its too early to tell what quake with get with 3d Sound and such, but I
would not worry about the Awe-32 at all. The President of ID Software
has an AWE-32 on his computer (Jay Wilbur). The Awe-32 also has the
ability for speech built in with the ASP and such and then it has Sound
Blaster and Sound Blaster 16 abilities. I have one, definatly worth it......

Roland is good for MUSIC ONLY, but the AWE-32 is good for DIGITAL and
MUSIC.

The Awe is definatly ONE of the best buys I have ever made (next to
this 14.4kbps modem)

WELL you are not understanding..

The Forte tech, as I understand it... is only for headphones.

And the idea is that if you turn you head...
Then the sound rotates around you. You perceive the sound
to rotate about your ears.. (I.E. From left to right and back.)
It can place a sound in the sound field so that you can detect which
direction it is coming from.

Now the SRS is good. and works AND you don't need a "sweet spot"(center)
like QSound.

Vivid uses SRS and it is better than QSOUND IMHO.

But the Forte thing with the GUS is for localizing sounds in the sound
field. For real VR effect. Only with Headphones.
That is what the binaural(not binomial) sound means.
bin (two) aural ("sound sources")

Thank you.

=)

Bye!

As far as sound cards go, I've heard the turtle beach and was not particularly impressed. I bought the AWE32 when it first came out, and again, was not particularly impressed with the wavetable sounds. I returned the card after about 2 days and bought the SB16 basic and a Roland SCC-1. IMHO, nothing can beat this setup for games. Another alternative, although I haven't heard it, is Rolands daughterboard (DB-15 or something like that?). The SB16/SCC-1 setup, though, offers the best sound, music, and co

mpatibility for practicly anything a game player will .
