Quake1 under Windows XP

Greetings...
I just got a new system, which came with WindowsXP installed. I tried to
install and run good ol' Quake 1, and it crashes immediately. When
attempting to run the quake.exe executable, I get a GPF with the following
info:

Quake v1.06
Locked 1 Mb image
Locked 11 Mb data
malloc'd: 11833344
Exiting due to signal SIGSEGV
General Protection Fault at eip=000452cb
and a bunch of other addresses, etc.

I try to run the q95 batch file, it also crashes, without explaining itself.

My exposure to XP is going on 48 hours or so, so I may be missing something
very basic. There doesn't appear to be a 'MS-Dos Mode', or anything like
that. So what is one to do? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Hello!

Well, we are having also problems with Windows XP, but these problems seem
to be from other origin.

About your problem, check if you've installed quake properly (a few files
might be missing). But also a few options might be wrong.

Another idea is to klick right on the shortcut of quake, and select
properties and somewhere around there is something like run as if it were
run in windows 95 or something, it might work.

About the dos mode, you're right, there isn't anything like that around
there. Some peaple have, next to windows XP an older version of windows
(like 98 or 95) on their computer becoase they can do things in these
versions you can't do in XP.

I hope you can use my information, Blackwarrior

I reinstalled Quake yesterday for the first time in ages and had the same
problem on XP. Do a search for Winquake, that worked for me.

I'd give you a link to it, but I can't remember where I eventually found
it. Many of the links Google threw up were dead... not surprising given
Quake's age.

the original quake is a dos game which won't run under xp or win2k
you need to use winquake or glquake if you have a 3dcard that supports opengl
q95 bat file is not needed with win32 quake programs (winquake glquake
quakeworld)

Thanks all for your help - I found links for GLQuake, WinQuake and other
items on PlanetQuake... links to GameSpy/Fileplanet that is. I am currently
on a list of 600 people waiting to download the files I need (I'm not about
to pay money to subscribe). I will play with these and report back my
success or failure, in the hope that it is helpful to others.

Well, GLQuake did not do the trick. WinQuake, however, works fine. It is
nice to be able to play at such high resolutions. That TomazQuake that Bob
mentioned looks cool - I may have to try that too!

what happend with glquake, if you had errors asking for missing fiile
delete opengl32.dll from your quake directrory only.
assuming you have a 3d card that supports opengl
and up to date video card drivers.

there are quite a few 3rd party versions of quake now
which add different features
