Hi there,
Is there a limit to the amount of strength, dexterity and so on...
that a character can have. Eg strength has a limit of 50 for a rogue. I'm
just asking because I've just started a game using a Rogue.
	Thanks,

Unenhanced (i.e., you do not use any special armor, jewelry or weapons to
enhance your abilities), these are the Rogue's maximum ability totals:
    Strengthh 55
    Magic 70
    Dexterity 250
    Vitality 80

I got this from 'The Official Strategy Guide' for Diablo. Hope this
helps you.

Be seeing you,

As far as the rogue goes the natural stats max out at:

Str: 55
Magic: 70
Dex: 250 or 280 I forget
Vit: 80

of course all can go higher with magic equipment.

Difference character would have difference limit of the their attribute
if no other items is used to increase the attribute. For a rogue, the
max of attribute is about
STRENGTH	55
MAGIC 75
DEXTERITY	250
VITALITY	75

and for warrior
STRENGTH	250
MAGIC 50
DEXTERITY	60
VITALITY	100

and for sorcerer
STRENGTH	55
MAGIC 250
DEXTERITY	85
VITALITY	70

The above is just the max base you would get. You can increase anyone or
or using some items like ZODAIC, WIZARDARY, MAGIC OR ...

I'm

29 lvl warrior
31 lvl rogue
38 lvl sorcerer

That sucks, I thought Rogue would have better magic skills. Better
all round skills, actually. My lvl 29 Warrior is boring me cause he
can't read any more books even with his two +30 magic rings, +28
amulet, +25 dagger and +20 armor. The fact I have to carry all this
around with me in case I run into a book is bad enough.

I wouldn't complain that a Warrior can't cast much magic, except that
in the later levels, there are bundles of creatures that you can't get
close to before they've shot you to death with their magic, spit etc.

I thought a Rogue was an all-round character, but all she can do is
shoot a bow fast, and swing a sword like an old man. You're too
restricted with each character you pick, you should be able to extend
their abilities the way you see fit, instead of being so limited. And
the Mage has a way too big an advantage all the other characters once
he gets past lvl 30 or so. I mean, how does a Mage suffer with a
limit of STR? Warrior's suffer badly with the 50 limit on MAGIC.

If you've maxed out all your books with that much magic boosting, you've
read a hell of a lot of books.. what is a warrior going to do with a level
14 firebolt? =) My warrior is level 27.. I have magic rings of +29 and
+19, and I've read a few books, but don't really need them. The only
spells I ever cast are firewall (see below), healing, and town portal.

>I wouldn't complain that a Warrior can't cast much magic, except that

Of course you mean the witches and maybe the wizards (advocate, magistrate,
etc.) A few firewalls take care of all of those except for soul burners..
can't do much but run from them and hit new game, unfortunately.
With both magic rings on, I can cast four firewalls per full tank of
magic.. firewalls are especially effective against the witches because they
don't move. Occasionally, I'll do a firewall suicide run, usually after
I've died and need to retrieve my stuff: fill my belt with mana potions,
unequip everything except the magic rings.. go down and drop as many
firewalls as I can, then suicide by walking into a firewall (so I don't
lose the magic rings).. STAY THERE (don't restart) until the firewalls go
away.. they can and will kill witches even after you die.

Sorcerors get the same problem later on, though.. on hell difficulty,
there's a lot of immune-all creatures in hell that warriors have no trouble
with (Steel/Obsidian Lords in particular, and of course Diablo himself)

For a while, I carried a staff of lightning 69 charges that I found.. was
pretty helpful against the witches (except for snow witches). Lost it when
I left it in the dungeon while carrying a load of magical stuff up to ID
and sell, and the game crashed. (I do backup but the stuff and gold I had
gained were worth much more than that staff)

The rogue is an all-round character.. she can kill with a sword, bow, or
magic.. warriors stink with bows and magic, and mages can't even use most
bows and swords. The weapon/shield slots for a mage are put to better use
as ability-boosting items. As for diversity, its true that its difficult
to play any class in a different manner than it was intended.. but the
classes have vastly differing "natural" styles.. when my sorceror got
Dreamflange at level 33 and could waltz through most of nightmare hell and
hell church/catacombs, I started playing with a warrior instead.. the game
is very different with a warrior.

>the Mage has a way too big an advantage all the other characters once
>he gets past lvl 30 or so. I mean, how does a Mage suffer with a
>limit of STR? Warrior's suffer badly with the 50 limit on MAGIC.

Without some serious ability-boosting items, the mage is going to be
restricted to splint mail or lesser armor, and can't use some of the bigger
shields. My mage has a field plate, but only cause he's got a helm of the
stars and the field plate is also stars (if I unequip the armor, I have to
temporarily wear an amulet of giants so I can put the armor back on). My
warrior's awesome plate of deflection is well out of reach for my mage
without a three-piece zodiac jewelry set. =)

If your warrior is suffering badly with the magic limit, your warrior isn't
playing like a warrior... fighters are supposed to hack and slash their way
out of bad situations. My magic is currently 26 (36 with crown of the
stars) and I don't need any more... I put four points onto it from level
ups; the rest came from elixers and shrines. What kind of sword and AC do
you have? If you don't have a sword of haste and a
saintly/awesome/holy/godly armor of 100 AC or better (maybe a standard
50-60 AC with resistance and lots of hitpoints or vitality, like Obsidian
Plate of the Mammoth), you're not going to make it in hell. Try going to
nightmare difficulty and clearing out the church a few times.. this should
rack up a good 120-150 thousand gold (if you have trouble with the skeleton
king, skip him.. go down the stairs to 4 if you've found them, or hit new
game if you haven't.) Now, go shopping. Keep hitting new game (direct
connection or modem so you don't have to bother with battlenet) and
visiting the blacksmith and Wirt each time until you get a good armor and
sword. I got a Master's Sabre of Haste and then a Champion's [Long] Sword
of Haste from Wirt that way, and also an Awesome [Kite] Shield of the Tiger
from Griswold.

A harmony item also helps.. I have an amulet of harmony, and it definitely
makes a difference when surrounded by a pile of knights and vipers in hell.

Heh, I sure have. :) I can get my magic up to 176, still need a
shield and helmet, and I might manage to break 200.

Well, I find one of the best is the fireball, which is currently maxed
for me at level 9. This delivers a whopping punch to creatures, and
is great when they're standing in a crowd cause it hits all around
where it explodes. Obviously, it's also handy for those creatures
that can't be slashed because they always run when you get close (most
bow creatures, advocates and the bitches).

See, that sucks that you're resigned to starting a new game... ALL
characters should be able to handle each creature somehow.

Nah, they've always got a spell that works, even for those huge
Knights that claim to be immune to magic, but can very easily be stone
cursed.

Have you tried swinging a sword with her? Ugh!

Oh I agree, and I'm glad that each character has to be played
differently... to begin with. I think once you've reached a certain
level, you're too limited, and it all gets a little boring. And my
specific problem with the Warrior is that I dare not venture into Hell
alone with him, whereas if I was the same lvl Mage, I'd be there with
no hesitation.

So what? The creatures will never get to close to him! Plus he will
have 600 mana, and a mana shield will be better than any armor he
could wear.

I agree, but in most Hell situations, they can't. The bully creatures
that surround and pummel you are fine - my tough ol' Warrior with his
King's Sword and Godly Armor can handle them. But the spitters, the
bitches, the advocates.... they shoot him down, and run away. He
should be able to at least use a bow as well to hit the far off
creatures.

(it's a shame there's no hotkey to switch between bow and sword/shield
combinations)

Anyway, thanks for the long reply!

And you're a *warrior*? My level 33 mage only has 262 normally (can go up
to 292 by switching jewelry of wizardry for jewelry of heavens.. still
looking for that elusive zodiac stuff =) )

That's what a *mage* is supposed to do. I guess it does help against the
witches and bowmen, but I haven't had a whole lot of trouble chasing them
down and hacking them apart. If I'm up against a dozen at once, I'll drop
a few firewalls and that'll usually take out a bunch of them.

Warriors can still handle them.. chase them down individually and hack them
apart.. might need a lot of healing potions, but can still be done. No
different from a mage trying to beat the immune-all guys in hell/hell.

Yeah, but how much damage is a mage with Dreamflange and maybe 90% to-hit
going to do during one stone curse? And if you're up against four of
them... that's a lot of stone cursing (and it ain't a cheap spell to cast.)

I have.. not too effective, but it can be done. Haven't tried it on any
level lower than 2, though =)

I can venture into normal/hell easily with my level 27 warrior. Like I
said before, you need a good sword of haste and some good armor.. magic
resistance helps too but isn't completely necessary.

In hell mode against archers, the lower AC really makes a difference.. he
often gets pelted with arrows so fast he can't get off a fireball. It
doesn't matter a whole lot for normal/hell, though, I admit.

The spitters don't run away from you, and the advocates are no problem if
you've got some fire resistance. The bitches are of course a problem, but
firewalls and chasing them down has always worked for me.

>(it's a shame there's no hotkey to switch between bow and sword/shield

Or between staff and sword/shield... I used a staff of lightning against
the bitches for a while.

As a warrior, if you cannot read any more books visit a few shrines, eg
1 spell down the rest up a level. My warrior is "well-hard" and with
Dreamflange + Drakes Amulet (+30 magic + 40mana) can cast a lot of heavy
magic. Guardians are pretty lethal if you have a high spell level
