More Suggestions For Descent

Here are a couple more ideas for Descent:

	1. Decoys
I think it would be awesome if you could drop decoys that resembled
your ship and thus could draw fire away from you, tricking robots and
human players alike. It wouldn't have to be nearly as detailed as your
ship, just enough to look the same from a distance. When used, they would
sit still, like a proximity bomb, but hopefully last until they were
destroyed or the level was ended. This would really open up some COOL
tactics: like hiding in a cluster of your own decoys while your enemy
flies by, or placing one above lava, so your opponent gets incinerated
if he shoots. In addition, the decoy would be explosive like a proximity
bomb, sensitive both to shots and nearby robots/players. Actually, you
could just alter the proximity bombs to do this: remove the detonation
timer (so they don't explode after a minute), make them a bit more
sensitive to nearby enemies, and change the graphics to look like your
ship. This may be asking a bit much (or a lot much), but you could also
make the decoys "tougher", taking a couple of blasts to destroy, which
would add to the decoy's realism.

	2. Motion Detector
This could add a very interesting element to Descent play. Your
ship would be equipped with motion detector, similar in appearance to
the radar scope in the Wing Commander series. Thus, you could fly into
a room and determine the number of enemies in there - provided they were
moving. This would open the door for stationary robots, and hiding
the current robots in locations where they wouldn't be triggered until
it was too late for the player to react. In Anarchy, moving around would
be riskier, since you might alert the enemy to your presence. Even in
all-out combat, it would useful to have an idea of where they guy who's
  blasting you is located.

	Any opinions/thoughts/additions?

Interesting idea. I certainly wouldn't object to this, but don't
regard it as necessary.

> 2. Motion Detector

THIS is darned near essential. Many's the time I've been hit from some
odd angle and lost a lot of shield points spinning and twisting around in
a vain search for my tormentor. Even an indication of which direction
hits are coming from (front/back/right/left/up/down) would be a big help.

Another wish--a visual indication that a homing missle has lock. I'm
assuming that there's an audible tone or something, but again, those
without sound can't take advantage of this. Turning the crosshairs red or
blue or some other color to indicate lock, or turning the current
missle-circle into a red square, or ANYTHING, would be just fine.
I was going to ask that shield/power/weapon displays be available in
full-screen mode, but I notice that it's being worked on.
I'd like to add a couple of suggestions for control keys--not essential
ones by any means, but helpful.
     1. Right/Left/Up/(Down) views. The back view is very nice, but why
can't we look in more directions? I put (Down) in parentheses because
it's potentially forbidden by the fighter's design. The other views
aren't, though.
     2. Weapon cycle keys. Instead of having to go to the number keys to
switch weapons, it would be nice to be able to define cycle-keys, similar
to those found in "Marathon" (a new Mac Doom-type game), so that you can
switch weapons quickly in combat situations.

Hey, you gotta get sound man. When a tracking missle is fired at you,
you hear a Beep-Beep, and as it gets closer to you the thing beeps more
frequently. The only way to lose it is to run until you either hear it
explode or you don't hear the tracking beep for 10 seconds or more.

This is a way-cool idea. It's too bad you don't have sound...

I think the best idea would be a 360 degree radar-style screen in the
style of Wing Commander. If the idea of a radar would be too much of
an advantage, the same type of screen could be used to register hits,
at least.

Sorry--I didn't make myself clear. What I meant was that I'd like an
indication that one of my homing missles has a lock on an enemy target.
Whether there is an audible cue for this, there should be a visual cue,
just like the "LOCK" indicator on the panel when an enemy missle has
acquired you.

I hate the idea of spending MORE money to get what should have been a
basic hardware feature to begin with.

Yeah, you're right. It would be nice to know that when you fire a homing
missle that it's going to hit something. I never thought of that (big
surprise).

As for the sound, it looks like the PC industry is starting to wake up
to the fact that we all want sound. More and more PC's are coming
standard with sound these days.

I would rather not having a modion detector.. would make things too
easy. But what we need is a hit indicator. Probly one of the easiest to
implement would be to modify the shield image. If it was segmented to
show front/left/right/rear then you could flash one of those segments to
tell you where you have been hit.

The visual LOCK indicator is for you when you shoot a homing missile.
I suppose the message "Incoming Missile" should make that distinction.

Welcome to the wonderful world of PCs. If you have an Amiga, your problem
is solved with sound, but you'll have to get an accelerator to get anything
as complex as Descent to work. Which reminds me, Parallax/Interplay should
port this game to the Amiga. :)
