Possible uses for Proximity Bombs

Are proximity bombs good for anything other than when someone is following
right on your tail? I've never been able to succesfully use one. I tried
to place a mine somewhere and found that they have a time limit of about
45 sec to one minute.

Any ideas for creative uses for them? I always seem to be maxed out on these
things.

I figure they would be useful for those things with the cutters that come
straight at you.. you could drop one and back up.. it'd probably plow
right throught it.. I havn't tried tho

In a deathmatch, place one in front of a door that your enemy will fly
through. If s/he isn't cautious, they won't have time to react.

I tried dropping these in those monster-generation things (the purple things
that keep turning 'em out) so I wouldn't be surprised (the thing creates a
monster, and BOOM!). But it never went off... Mechs kept flying past the bomb
and nothing! As I recall I ended up blowing it up myself (heh heh heh). The
only thing I've ever found that could really set prox. bombs off is myself
(oops). Does anyone get good use out of these things? Maybe if there wasn't
any time limit, they'd be more useful. Myself, I almost never use anything
except the laser. The spread weapon doesn't do a lot of damage, particularly
compared to a level 4 quadlaser. The vulcan cannon eats up a lot of ammo and
doesn't seem to do much extra damage; plus, that noise seems to slow my
computer down sufficiently that I can't aim (Oh, if I only had a Pentium). The
missiles... I always save up the missiles for a special occasion and never get
around to using them. Maybe the registered version only weapons are more
useful. The FAQ mentioned that certain weapons are better in certain places...
anyone have any advice on this matter? Still, just using my laser works for me
(kinda like in DOOM where I almost always use the shotgun (works great and
plenty of ammo); I was kinda disappointed in DOOM II where they stop giving
you shotgun ammo and so I have to use the plasma rifle and so on. 'Course,
there's a cyber-demon in every level after about 10 and the shotgun doesn't
work very well against him, even double-barreled. Works against everything
else, though).

I have to add my voice to the general frustration surrounding
proximity bombs. Use them on your so-called friends chasing after
you after they have blown away most of your shields and you're
running for your bloody life. Use them on those dumb green chopper guys
( I forgot what they're called ). You can also use them on
the yellow guys, or even the blue ones, when they're feeling
aggressive (as you'll note they will from time to time) -- you
need to think fast to handle that correctly. Use them to blow the
door into the chamber where the hostages are kept (I'm operating on
the theory that proximity bombs are less useful than laser power or
oh-so-precious Vulcan shells, so use the bombs instead and save
your better weapons for fighting w/baddies). But in general I
don't find them nearly as useful as they "ought" to be.

I found a really good spot to use them. I can't remember the level
number, but there is a T intersection shaped like the following:

                         X-----X
                            |
                            |
                            |
                            O

The X's denote the purple spawning grounds for the robots and the O is you
and your ship. I had about ten bombs and what I would do is zip into the
intersection and immediately drop a bomb and zip back out never changing
direction. Just accelerate forward and accelerate backward very quicky
because the minute you go into the intersection, the robots start spawning.
Eventually the 'bots stop spawning and you're on your way!

I tried this last night. It worked great the first time, but the second time
I tried it, he just stayed on the other side of the bomb. He wouldn't go
past it until I got closer to him.

Overall, those bombs seem to work pretty well for those guys. :)

...welp, they do come in handy in the end of level 7...a few mines in the
right places can help finish the big guy off. They also help with the
robot generators...maybe place one in a narrow corridor near one...it'll
either kill them or block them off....and if you need to get back there,
blow the mines up, which would probably kill off one or more of the guys
behind the mine.
