Hello all This is my first post to this group. I wanted to ask you if there was an editor for Descent out yet, but I could only read articles, and not send them. Now I know there is an editor called DEVIL. (What does is stand for?) I have tried all the FTP sites you mentioned, but from SA they are >very< slow... Do any of you know of a sight that has the editor here in SA? Can anybody upload the editor to a site here in SA? I look forward in contributing to this group. I am working on several projects involving DOOM II levels, music, SFX, and graphics... This new Descent editor seems like the ultimate salvation! I LOVE Descent... Thanks all Regards SV

Ok this is for all you Descent level makers out there that use DEVIL. I have figured out the hex code that changes the robot behavior in descent. Using the hex table go down to the line 8c. It should be zeroed out. Now here's the trick type in 00 07 00 ?? Where ?? can be the following: ??=80 Guard mode ??=81 unknown maybe standard aggressive ??=83 run away/lay bombs/open doors--very cool! ??=85 very aggressive or wait/pounce There u go! Now if someone can figure out what is needed to make the custom levels work with 2 two player mode please let me know. From what I gather (thanks to an expert's input) you need 8 start things and 3 coop things plus reactor thing in a level to keep it from crashing. Unfortunately Devil has a major flaw here. The coop thing does not work for me. Every time I try to insert a coop I crash :( Some please let me know if it's possibel to insert a co-op thing using Devil. I hope the author of devil reads this and fixes it. BTW Devil is AWESOME even with the mentioned bugs

When you start a new level, it gives you a standard start point. Leave this alone. All new start points should be numbered 01, 02, 03 etc... Now go to Drawings, Data to get the hex dump. For every start point except the first, change the "05 01" on the first line to "00 01", if this has not been done by DEVIL already. After the end of the green stuff, at the start of the unknown data, add the following to all new start points: 35 bc 04 00 00 00 64 00 Then at offset 004c, put FF. At offset 0068, put 00 04 00 72. At offset 006C, put 08. At offset 008C, put 00 0B 00 2B. And the last four bytes should all be ff's. I don't know why this works, whether it always works, or whether some of what I've listed is unnecessary. I have successfully played a custom level in modem deathmatch with this technique, however. -- Darren Lo (Inferno on irc)

I hate to followup my own post but... Coop start points are not necessary to deathmatch in a level. The Chaos levels have no coop start points. Also, I tried deleting the coop start points from First Strike level one and it worked fine also.

Humm.. I don't know about any SA sites, but I do know you can get a
good copy from ftp.cdrom.com as /incoming/games/devil097.zip. It will
probably still take a while, but its worth the wait ;)
Let me know if you ever find it in your neck of the woods.

Well.. here is the trick. If you want to set anarchy start, simply
insert an item into a room, make it a start, and number it 01. So when
you are done your 8 starts, you should have starts 00-07. This will now
work in multiplayer mode, where everyone starts randomly from
start00-07. I don't know how to insert a coop start from the item menu
yet, but I guess if your level was made to be coop, just put all your
starts in on room (but not on top of each other!). There is a way to
insert a coop start by using the pro-hex mode and manually inserting the
data for a coop start (you can look for the data in the devil.ini file).
I recomend loading up a registered descent level, finding the coop
starts, macro them, and then insert them into your level. Good luck!

True, but I still wish we would get the chance to try out the Parallax
editor... >:(
