Sounds in Regestered Descent Not Right
#1082

After installing registered Descent, I found that the sounds aren't right.
For, example, the flares sound the same as a level one laser, and picking up
a hostage sounds the same as picking up a shield bonus or energy bonus. Also,
the different levels of lasers used to have distinct sounds, now they all
sound the same.

In the shareware version, they all used to have their own, unique sound.

Is there something in the setup, or is this a bug??

Because of increased memory requirements for the Registered version, some
sounds are used for more than one effect if you have low memory on your
system. It sounds like that's what's happening to you.

You may want to try the -NoLowMem option. That will disable the
systems that try to save memory. Your game will run slower, but you
should get all the sounds and bitmaps that would be present if you had
more memory.

I have found that the 8-bit sounds work great but on my friends
16-bit sound card some of the registered sounds are messed up (for
instance breaking glass is a regular explosion)

I was having some of the same problems until I realized that
the registered version requires more convential memory. I created a
dual boot environment, which provided the bare minimum, basically just
the sound card, and all of the cool sounds returned. I am guessing that
if there isn't quite enough convential memory available, some less
important sounds get mapped to more generic sounds like you are
hearing currently. Hope that helps.
