3-D Games causing SeaSickness?

I've been playing Wolfenstein 3-D for the past few days, and have
noticed that if I play for more than about a half of an hour I start
to get real nauseous and start to sweat. Very much like sea-sickness.
Is this a Nazi plot to take over the minds of computer game players
everwhere?

Has anyone ever experienced this phenomenon with other 3-D games?
Flight simulators?

I remember back in my Atari 800 days there was a maze game called
Wayout that was similar in perspective to that of Wolf3D but it never
made me nauseous?

Maybe it's the fact that I'm Jewish, and the though of Nazis turns my
stomach sour? But you'd think that I'd really like to see all the
Nazi's get blown away (I really do) .... Hmmm.

I wonder if there's ever been a study of this phenomenon in and
medical litterature?

It's been noted in virtual reality literature that when you have
either: a convincing view of motion without the motion (such as VR) or
the feeling of motion without a view of it (on a large ship or plane
in turbulence) you get nauseous.

>I remember back in my Atari 800 days there was a maze game called

I played it too, but it wasn't nearly as fast or convincing.

Check out the virtual reality literature. Some people even get
nauseous when they "push" stuff around in the VR world, because their
hand doesn't feel anything, and their brains expect that it would.

Sunday, I played for about an hour. I felt like I was going to throw up.
I had been wondering if it was the game or I was getting ill. Guess I'll
keep myself to 15 minutes at a time. Too bad cause the game is so addicting.

I do miss the grendes and other features of the original games.

Steve,
This is a fairly well-recognized phenomena known to the human factors
community as simulator sickness. Its source is the conflict between
visual cues and vestibular (motion and/or orientation) cues. When I
worked at McAir in St. Louis, I frequently used the F/A-18 flight
simulator for evaluations, and experienced the same problems; in fact,
there was nearly a direct correlation between the amount of actual flying
an individual had done and the degree to which they were afflicted with simulator sickness. The services have done quite a bit of research in this
area, but I'm sorry to say there's nothing you can do about it except stop
playing when you get adverse symptoms.

There has been (and still is) an extensive discussion of the motion-
sickness phenom from Wolf-3d on one of the comp.binaries.ibm groups
(where it was originally posted).

Please dont start one here!!!!

I've had the same problem with wolf3d. I've worked up to playing it
for about 15 minutes a day. I've played a lot of video games in my
time (i used to play red baron for hours), but i've never had this
problem before.

Ok folks, here is the solution to your Wolf 3D sickness problems! All you need
to do is make the view smaller. I did that yesterday and played for hours and
no sickness!!! Give it a try!!

You aren't alone. I played Wolfenstein 3-D for several hours
yesterday morning. I was so dizzy the rest of the day that I had to
go home early.

Maybe this is why we haven't seen this kind of fast-action 3-D game
before. Bad ergonomics.

I was so curious about everyone getting motion sickness from
Castle Wolfenstein, I had to go and get the game to check it out.

I haven't experienced any sickness, but I usually find my self trying
to peek around corners by leaning to the right or left in hopes
of getting a better view.

Very well done game!

Why not? Isn't this an appropriate place for such a discussion? I don't want
to wade through a lot of comp.binaries stuff to read about games.

It's a game by Chris Crawford, I think while he was still with

Did you see the movie "Bullit"? During the car chase scene in San Francisco
they were going down these hills. Due to the way it was filmed a lot
of people felt thier "stomach drop out" everytime they went down another
hill. It was the same feeling one has when riding a roller coaster. You're
experiencing the same thing in Wolf3d.

Uh, isn't this a more appropriate place to move that discussion about Wolf-3d?
Afterall, it is a game and this is the game group. :)

It may help to reduce the size of the viewing window using the
'change view' menu command. By reducing the visual area, your peripheral
vision compensates for the motion effects.

Will I have a problem with most joystick cards on a 386/40, since it runs too
