I was just wondering what your favorite custom world settings were. I like large land masses and then leaving everything else at default. Right now I am involved in a game that almost all of the civs are on one string continent. THe aRTFuL DoDGeR.

I tried that once at King level, but by the 1900's there were so many cities and units that I had to start saving the game every turn as my PC locked up every few turns due to memory exhaustion. Now I play at Emp. level with small land masses, and everything else default. Anyone try changing the other factors?

What I find intersting, is either pushing all stats up, or all stats down... All down is fun to play at emp lvl with say 3-5 civs, making it a competition of your efficiency to their cheating skills.. All up basically makes the world a hell hole, and is just plain difficult... but it can have some really wierd island configurations. I once started on a paradise type island, the the rest of the planet had lots of green grassland, the kind thats most productive, with lots of tundra and mountians too... the world was very fertile, to be honest, which I did not expect from the settings... 8-)

I ALWAYS have a large land mass, especially on emperor lvl, so I can engage the opposition before I develop navigation (which takes a LONG time on that lvl) I also choose an old world, (5 bil years?) as this reduces the no of mountains there are. Occasionally, I'll pick a wet and hot world too, as this will give lotsa swamps/jugles which can be irrigated to grasslands for large populations. This space for rent ----------> Ken

For those of you busy buying the world in a Democracy, have you tried this: Build 20 diplomats to attack the capital. When your military is in position, send in all 20 to conduct industrial sabotage. I'm wondering whether the Industrial sabotage will destroy the Palace improvement (after all, it's an improvement), and thus turn the capital into just another city (meaning you can buy it). If this works, all you need to conquer a civ is tons and tons of cash and tons and tons of diplomats. The good thing is diplomats don't cause unhappiness and are cheaper to build than most military units. A fair sized city can produce 1 diplomat per turn, while it takes 2 turns or so to produce an Armor unit. Also, diplomats don't cause unhappiness so you can have around 100 diplomats landing on a continent for just 12-15 unhappiness points (democracy, with Women's suffrage, 1 point per transport out of home city). Another good thing is that if you can get past the part about the game complaining about too many military units, you can station diplomats EVERYWHERE and take EVERY nation AT THE SAME TIME. Has anyone tried this? Is it possible to blow up the Palace? Michael Lewchuk lew...@cs.UAlberta.CA

Whenever I'm on the warpath I go directly for the capitol city (unless I have gobs n' gobs of money on my hands) and industrial sabotage it until the city walls come down. At that point I capture it via usual military means. After the capitol is in your hands the price to buy out all other cities is something like 1/2 what it previously was. I've never kept sending in diplomats after the walls are down so I don't know if you can sabotage the palace - I doubt it though. You'd think diplomat usage would be obvious but I'd be ashamed to admit how long it took me before I realized it was a *LOT* easier to conquer an opponent by buying him out rather than trying to beat him up. About the only time I militarily overrun a city now is if I need a bridehead onto a continent in which I can't land my 7 diplomats and 1 armor unit (to take out the capitol) without them being wiped out first. If this is the case I use battle ships on some small costal city first. The secret to my serious improvement was to use diplomats more effectively and to buy, buy, buy rather than bludgeon. You need to optimize for trade to use this effectively of course, so you have the funds to buy things with. -- Keith Rogers Evans & Sutherland Computer Corp. kro...@javelin.sim.es.com
