Where was the plot in games like Asteroids, Space Invaders, or Defender?

There is no plot! It's just a shoot-em-up game. There are games, and there
are adventure games. Ultima, King's Quest, etc are adventure games - they
have a plot. The former games I mentioned are not. W3D seems to fall
into this catagory - you just go out and see how many guys you can kill
and how many points you can get.
