Firaxis developing XCOM game

"It's been a dream of ours to recreate X-COM with our unique creative
vision. We're huge fans of the original game and it's a once in a lifetime
opportunity to re-envision a game that is as beloved as X-COM," said Steve
Martin, president of Firaxis Games. "We were careful to keep XCOM: Enemy
Unknown true to the elements that made X-COM such a revered game while
delivering an entirely new story and gameplay experience for both die-hard
X-COM fans and newcomers to the franchise."

Somebody pinch me.

I got all giddy at first - then I saw it was an FPS. I think the same thing
happened to Jagged Alliance. These companies are buying the rights to the old
"names" so we wax nostalgic and simply making "yet another shooter".
Very disheartening.

This is disappointing. Especially since I literally just this week
tried to install and play the original again. (Couldn't get it to work
though, some kind of graphics mismatch on my old XP machine. :( )

Nope. The XCom game Firaxis is developing is a strategy game. The XCom
FPS game was announced a while ago and is being made by different
developer.

Looks promising so far, all the elements of original game. Real-time
strategic interface, turn-based tactical interface, destructable
enviroments, research, expendable guys, etc...

Say what? Did you guys even bother to read the article? The FPS is being
developed by another company entirely, Firaxis is planning to keep the
gameplay intact - including the TB combat and all. So much so they are
calling it a "re-imaging" of the original game. Some excerpts:

http://www.gameinformer.com/b/features/archive/2012/01/06/first-screens-and-details-of-xcom-enemy-unknown.aspx

* Wasn't there another XCOM game?
Yes, 2K Marin is developing a previously announced first-person shooter,
simply called XCOM. That game was originally scheduled to come out last
year, but has since been delayed out of 2011. [ Note he said 2K Marin, not
Firaxis. This is a different game altogether].

* How do those games relate to each other?
The shooter takes place earlier in the fiction, chronicling the aliens'
first attacks in the United States. The strategy game we're talking about
here deals with the global response to the later full-blown alien invasion
of Earth.

* So this is some kind of RTS?
No, not in the way the term "RTS" typically applies to games like StarCraft.
The real-time element of XCOM is confined to the global view, where the
player keeps track of known UFOs and abductions going on around the world.
Managing research and development at the XCOM organization's secret base can
be done at the player's leisure, and all combat is completely turn-based.

* You switch between real-time and turn-based?
Yes. When your aerial transport lands at an abduction site, the game
switches to a tactical view and you command your squad of personalized
soldiers in battle against an unknown alien threat.

* Is this a remake of the original?
Kind of. Re-imagining is probably a better term. Firaxis' XCOM: Enemy
Unknown doesn't directly copy the underlying game systems - for instance,
soldiers have different stats than they did in the 1994 original - but the
concepts are still here. Players still have to manage multiple resources and
threats on a global scale in a seemingly hopeless war against
extraterrestrial forces with far better technology and capabilities.

No kidding! Thanks for drawing my attention to this one. I've been sinking so
much time into Civ lately that I didn't even see it coming.

Looks like computer gaming is coming back to its roots. There's a Jagged
Alliance strategy game coming out too, and I'm told Frozen Synapse is not to be
missed. (http://www.frozensynapse.com/ if you have missed it)

I'm an Amiga guy, so I would say this... but you could run the Amiga
version pretty easily through WinUAE on an XP system. The AGA Amiga
version was pretty cool, but I don't think it had night missions.

Ooooh are you going to start a 'Why Are the Graphics So High End It Is
Just A Strategy Game!' kind of thread if your computer can't handle
it??? We haven't seen one of those in awhile!

Place a giant electromagnet behind your main hand on the opposite side

You have to fall on your nose with the cross. And the nail has to be

[NSFA] Not Safe for Anyone. LOL.

But seriously, anything but a "Why do they use power of current equipment for
games that I could play on my trusty Osborne 1?" threads. Hanging by your balls
may have benefits, I haven't tried it, but that sort of thread would definitely
just be a lot of pointless pain-and-suffering.
