What it ought to be is very heavily escorted. This is in fact a fair assessment of how naval transport of ground troops has been handled since before 1000 BC. You don't design your warships to carry huge numbers of troops-- troops are just so much extra mass (with a lot more required to give them life support), in a space battle. By the same token, designing your transports to be warships means a huge increase in the cost of what are essentially throw-away ships, intended for a single mission. The correct solution to this problem is to send lots of warships along with your transports, to protect them long enough for them to finish the job of offloading the troops. I don't have (nor was I aware it was available) GalCiv, so I can't comment on its transport mechanism specifically, but I should certainly hope that it would be designed to allow escort ships to protect the transports by engaging any attackers at some distance from the ships the escort protects. Does it? - Bill (ha...@midway.uchicago.edu)
