Daggerfall: Buggy quests

I have taken to the practice of saving BEFORE I get a quest,
as about 10 times I have recieved the 'kill the wild animal in the
house' quests, gone to the residence,m and found the game would not
let me enter the building, even though it is clearly marked on my map
when I asked the peons for directions.. I sincerely doubt that this
deal would have gone unnoticed by the game's beta testers.. Also, how
the heck do you get your reputation to go up? I've completed about 4
FedEx quests for oh mighty king of daggerfall, and I'm still a 'common
citizen'.. Oh yeah, couple more things.. On one of the said buggy
quests, I returned to the Order of the Dragon, and the quest guy
ignored me, totally.. even 3 months in game time after the quest
expired, he _STILL_ ignores me.. what's up with that?
oops.. few more Q's here.. like how the heck do you get artifact
quests, what is a quick way to find your way out of these HUGE
dungeons in daggerfall, and in one dungeon there were the brick walls,
which if climbed would teleport you to a diferent part of the
dungeon.. I hope I am not alone in the thought taht this is incredibly
stupid.. it's so easy to get lost in the huge dungeons and you can't
even place markers on the map to the best of my knowledge..

PS: Anyone got any daggerfall web pages with up to date info?

I also have a problem with those screwed up quests. One time the
Fighters Guild sent me on a quest to clear out Bank of Dagerfall of
rats and bats. The problem was, when I got there, NO ANIMALS! There
was nothing there that shouldn't be. I even talked to the bank
'teller' and there was nothing about a rat or bat infestation. I
think if you blow off a quest, your rep goes down a notch. This is a
problem since you have no choice but to forget the quest.

I realized last night that saving before getting quests really is a good
idea even if it is kinda cheating *coughes about a patch* The damn
knights guild sent me on a simple quest to go wipe out as many orcs as
possible, including Bazsomething, the captain. I did so, returned and
apparently my reputation was so low that he didn't want to talk to me or
the quest was buggy in some other way.

The neato automap for dungeons is just that...I get more confused
looking at the endless 3D crap than if I just wandered in circles for
a few hours...
I had a similar problem with the Order of the Dragon. My first game I
didn't even notice the guy who looks like a pile of rags in the
corner...so I didn't know how to get quests. This game I thought I
finished a dungeon but when I returned the rags wouldn't respone to me
anymore :( So I guess If you don't complete the quest he won't give
you the time of day...got me...Anyway how the hell are you supposed to
know if you completed a quest....does a lightbulb flash or thunder
clap and a mystical voice say you are saved? I wandered through a
seemingly endless dungeon...thought I had gutted it only to find I had
to start all over again. Man this is lamerama RPG...totally no fun.
Better be one HELL ova Patch man!

[snips all over]
: My main gripe is the useless automap.

I posted something of a helpful hint on another thread, but I'll repeat
it. Try this, change the mode to side view (click the grid), adjust the
view so that you are just a little bit above the level of your PC.
Rotate the map to direction that isn't exactly one of the cardinal
directions, ie, don't look at the map square on, you'll never make
heads or tails of it if you do. You should be able to get a good sense of
the area immediately surrounding, and once you start to pay attention to
the compass some more, you'll find that you can make your way around
dungeons rather efficiently. Try not to rotate the map too much once
you've off set it from an exact cardinal direction. Use zoom in/out, and
up/down and left/right instead. This way you won't get so disoriented
with direction each time you pull up the map. Remember to use the compass
though!

Good luck,

The quest thing pisses me off more than any other bug I've encountered (there
have been quite a few). I'm a custom-made fighter and I'm trying to get some
reputation at the mages guild so I go on a quest to find some "Saint's Hair"
in a certain dungeon. I go in the dungeon barely make it through but finally
find the item and escape. I'm proud of myself and ready to get my reward.
I try to go back to daggerfall but it says I may not make it.
Aparently, I have some disease (Still says I'm healthy when I check). It
should tell you that you are feeling sick. I went to a nearby temple healed
myself and finally returned to daggerfall.
Unfortunatly my excitement faded when I returned to the man who asked
me for the Saint's Hair, I am greeted with "Hi Stranger". He didn't seem to
care about me any mor, nor allow me to go on another quest. He gave me 14
days to do it and it only took me around 5. If I encounter another bug tlike
this I am planning to ditch this game.

Actually there are about three different buildings in the city that
are all marked the Bank of Daggerfall. Well, only one gets marked on
the automap, the other two stay unmarked orange buildings. Your bat
and rat infestation might have been at one of the other buildings.

Has anyone ever been paid for the bat/rat infestation quest? I've
completed it a couple of times with different characters and should
have noticed something funny when no price was mentioned up front. Upon
completion of the quest, the quest giver said something to the effect,
"wasn't that pretty easy for the pay your getting" but no money was
offered. This could be intentional but I doubt it.

                                     Hmmmmm,

I really am enjoying the game despite its glitches (everywhere),
occasional crashes, and the fact that my 486/66 can't handle moving
thru a city on a sunny day (I know, the last is my fault).

My main gripe is the useless automap. I sit there for 10 minutes
staring at the thing, rotating, scrolling it this way and that (could
you scroll a little slower please?), and generally I can't make heads
or tails of it. Oh sure I can click to make part disappear but it's
little help. So like above poster I just wander around until I've
seen the corridors so many times I can't possibly get lost. Related
to this is the sprawling dungeons.. I like the 3d-ness of them, but
just a little smaller would be nice.

I had that problem too. Luckily, I had it saved in the dungeon and
looked around some more. It's the same thing with the "Kill the BLANK
at such and such dungeon (Imp, whatever)", where you kill 20 BLANKS, but
not THE RIGHT BLANK. Anyway, I found the Saints Hair somewhere else in
the dungeon. Generally, a message will appear saying "MR BLANK will be
happy you got his stuff" kind of thing.

On another note, besides the buggy quests, I've had very few crashes
with this game, maybe once or twice in several days of gaming. I have a
Gateway P5-120 w/ 32 meg RAM, older Ensoniq card, and I've been running
the game in Win95.

It definitely seems that the crashes are highly system dependent.....

While I don't disagree with the idea of saving before getting a quest, I
have been on SEVERAL and never had this problem. Except for once. When I
knew I hadn't made it back in time. Could that be the problem here?

Ok sorry for the necro-post but, i am on the quest to get the lords mail. I talked to the witch and she said for me to get her grand daughter from some palace. I go to the palace, its locked. I try to break in with my daedric warhammer and now i cant even activate the door.
