No. First time I played, it look me longer than 20 minutes (the supposed
time it takes to blow up the ship). The nuke never lauches, either, til
you've sabotaged it.

Here's a few of mine not mentioned yet:

Myth: when you get to control Balin and just lay waste to the
countryside.

Myth again: when the buddy you need to rescue in the five heroes
missions regains his power and pulverizes an entire army for you.

Myth one last time: the first time you meet a trow.

Everquest: killing Nagafen for the first time (and it was the server's
first time too for me).

Ultima 5: meeting the guy down under the world who caused the whole
problem in the first place.

Ultima 7: the showdown with Batlin

Wing Commander 2: the traitor reveals himself.

More accurately, Jonah requested that people not use beginnings or
endings when submitting the top gaming moments. They're pretty obvious
choices, for various reasons, and don't really get the point across.

Never, ever let them see sunlight.

Ok - heres a few:-

Ultima 7 - reading the notebook which finally started to mention the
guardian and his relationship to the fellowship

Ultima Underworld Part 2 - loads here, but making your encounter with Mias
Gothas (I think) on the floating castle was quite cool. Not sure if the
name is spelt right - but she was the female avatar.

System Shock - packed with moments - for me cancelling the escape pod was
excellent (although many would say the 'nice jump human' equalled it

Final Fantasy 7 - final battle with Sephiroth, complete with manga style
facial close-ups (ok - a finally technically - but pretty damn cool)

Personally, I'd change this to meeting the TRANCENDENT ONE, rather than just
arriving in the fortress. Until then, I hadn't figured out who he really
was, and then everything fell into place. The ending was still open (as
opposed to scripted) at that point, so I don't consider this as the ending
per se.

My additions:

Alpha Centauri:

Using the the Planet Buster for the first time, and - without realizing what
effect it would have - targeting a cluster of enemy core cities just for
fun. I still have wet dreams about that, and I'm so glad my first time was
with a Singularity Engine.

Max Payne:

Entering Aesir Corporation headquarters, and finding that your ammunition
levels had somehow been maxed upon making it to chapter 7. I don't think my
smile could've been any wider at that point, especially with Matrix so fresh
in mind.

Syndicate:

Reaching the final level, Atlantis, with a full stock of Gauss guns, just to
be assaulted by a horde of enemy agents immediately upon start.

Dune:

Taking back the first Harkonnen fortress riding on a giant worm and using
nukes. _Man_, that felt good. It was probably the most delivering payback
I've ever experienced, after losing to them little by little through the
entire game.

I think an ending should be included. I can count on the fingers of

Mine, in no particular order:

Final Fantasy II (IV in Japan) - I have a few from this game: When
Rydia rejoins the party. Tellah's death. Palom & Porom's sacrifice.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic - When Revan's identity is
revealed.

Might & Magic: Darkside of Xeen - Fighting the Megadragon and getting
my ass handed to me. Going to the Red Dwarf mines.

System Shock II - The Mall level, and hearing Xerxes going something
like "Remember, there are only 163 shopping days until Christmas.
Picking up a gift from the shopping center will make this a joyous
holiday season for your loved ones." when you're the only one alive on
the ship and security droids are trying to blow your head off.

Mega Man 2 - Finally beating Quick Man's level.

Rygar - Seeing the floating lion castle in the distance.

Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time - Seeing old Link for the first time.

Super Metroid - Seeing the young metroid grown up. Just about made me
pee my pants.

Final Fantasy - Crossing the first bridge.

Actraiser - Animating a statue to kick some monster ass.

Hmm. Let's see, here are the ones that haven't been mentioned yet:

Ultima Underworld 1: The confrontation with the Slasher of Veils -- you
toss the Talismans into the lava, get sucked into a psychedelic realm
and have to outrun an extremely pissed-off foe you cannot even scratch,
never mind kill. Ye-ow! The most intense end boss encounter I've had in
any game, and a most welcome departure from the same, boring old "kill
the big foozle" type of climax.

Ultima 6: This was my first cardinal Ultima. After exploring Castle
Britannia, I stepped out into Britain proper, saw people running around,
everyone following their own little schedules ... and realized there was
a huge, real world out there to explore!

Ultima 6 again: Having learned the language of the gargoyles and their
reasons for wanting me dead, there was only one way to stop the
hostilities -- pledge my life to their leader, and hope that we could
find an alternative solution before he decided it was time to haul me
back to the same bloody altar my friends had snatched me off in the
beginning of the game.

Ultima 7, The Black Gate: Returning to New Magincia to return Alagnar
the sage's very enlightening notebook which he had kindly let me borrow
-- only to find the poor bastard ritually slaughtered and dismembered on
the floor of his house. What had happened? Well, the wisps who had given
me the quest to let them absorb the information in the notebook had then
passed it on to the game's ubervillain, the Guardian, who apparently
decided the sage had delved too deeply into his insidious schemes and
sent his minions to murder him. So, essentially, my virtuous Avatar was
at least partly responsible for the poor guy's brutal death ... it
haunted her for a long, long time.

(Also in U7 TBG, and I don't care if it's against the rules ;) --
hearing the guardian's voice in the intro. It sent shivers down my
spine, and I've never again come to love-to-hate a villain as quickly
and completely.)

Ultima Underworld 2: Exploring Kilhorn Keep and realizing with grim fury
what a deliberate, hideous mockery of Castle Britannia and the Virtues
it was. Much later, this mockery climaxed in the confrontation with Mors
Gotha, the Guardian's anti-Avatar and leader of his forces. This was
even more disturbing because she bore more than a passing resemblance to
my own character.

Ultima 7, Serpent Isle: At least three unforgettable moments in this
one. 1) Seeing the burned-out husk of Castle Britannia in the Dreamworld
and talking to a despairing Lord British. My Avatar was terrified this
vision would come true and there would not be a Britannia to return to,
and although she knew the key to solving all these problems lay on
Serpent Isle, she desperately wished she could be there for Britannia's
people in their hour of need. 2) Having to fight, and worst of all kill,
my three best friends after the Chaos Banes possessed them. No kidding,
I had tears in my eyes during that battle. 3) Dupre's sacrifice. Need I
say more?

(Yes, I'm obviously a huge Ultima fan.)

On a far more light-hearted note, discovering how to torment Elaine's
cook in Monkey Island 2. Oh, how I loved driving the guy nuts with my
posthorn-blowing and trashcan-rattling. :D

Baldur's Gate 2 - Shadows of Amn: Entering the shadow dragon's lair. It
was the first dragon I met, and although Mazzy had warned my party about
its presence, I almost fell off my chair when this HUGE beast appeared
on the screen.

Baldur's Gate 2 - Throne of Bhaal: The throwdown with the guardians of
the final seal in Watcher's Keep. Most battles in BG2 (SoA and ToB)
weren't too challenging, but boy, this one was different. They cleaned
my clock twice before I decided that trying to play "smart" obviously
wasn't getting my anywhere, and that a good, old-fashioned stand-up
brawl was called for. Yes, third time's a charm. ;)

ADoM (Ancient Domains of Mystery, a roguelike): Entering the Chaos Gate,
all psyched up to battle Andor Drakon and claim my first ultra ending.
Talk about a psychedelic sequence!

StarCraft: The rebirth of the former Terran heroine Sarah Kerrigan as
the Queen of Blades during the Zerg campaign. I liked her infinitely
more in that incarnation, as compared to the wimpy girl who always
played second fiddle to the annoying male Terrans.

Morrowind: Discovering the Cavern of the Incarnate and listening to
Azura's speech. It's one of the all-too-rare moments when the story
actually kicks off and sucks you in.

comp.sys.ibm.pc.games.rpg:

> Ultima 7: the showdown with Batlin

In TBG or SI? ;)

Both were great moments. Having really learned to hate the Fellowship,
and knowing the Guardian was about to enter Britannia through the Black
Gate, I decided that I didn't have time for a fair fight, and that
Batlin and his cronies weren't worth one anyway -- so I snuffed them out
with Mass Death before they could even lift a finger. Verrrry
satisfying, except for the fact that Batlin got away, thanks to the
Guardian's protection. So I laughed my head off when the Guardian
himself iced Batlin in Serpent Isle, though I would have preferred to
kill him myself. Well, I laughed until the newly-freed Chaos Banes
possessed my poor companions, that is. :(

That of course brings to mind a similar moment in Jedi Knight one, the
level near the end where you are trapped in the falling transport about to
crash into the canyon floor and frantically scramble through it's bowels
trying to reach your ship to escape.

I'll second that one.

Also, in MOHAA, the level right after you raid the rifle factory and pick
up the assault rifle; the first time I played that level, I'd spent
something like three hours in the factory, moving from cover to cover and
killing everything that moved in the hopes that the tide of enemy soldiers
attacking me might someday come to an end... finally I fought my way out of
the factory, into the snowy woods beyond, got my orders to destroy the
commo facility in the town up ahead, entered the town, had to start
fighting again...

... and clearing out that one big house overlooking the base, moving room
to room killing Nazis, until finally the last one was dead and the sounds
of combat faded momentarily... I found the piano and the bass in the
drawing room, and played them... those forlorn notes, sounds from a happier
time... I thought about the family whose house I'd just taken from the
people who had taken it from them, and where they might be... and I just
wanted this damnable war to be *over* so everybody could go home and live
the rest of their lives in peace...

... but no, it was cold and snowing outside, and in a few minutes I'd be
back out there, killing and maybe being killed, in the frigid darkness.
This moment of light and warmth and music was the illusion, and reality was
the blood-freezing cold and struggle outside the door.

THAT was my greatest gaming moment ever. Corny as it was, it damn near
made me cry; I have no idea if the designers intended for any of that stuff
to happen, but it was majestic.

Hmm... I quess that kind of makes sense. Unless the game maintains the same
quality of moments from the start to the finish (like PS:T does.) But hey,
you are making the rules so nevermind.

I just thought its kind of stupid to exclude endings just because most games
put all their oomph there.

There are a lot of System Shock 2 moments. One of mine was fighting
off one of the robot nurses with a crowbar after emptying what few
bullets I had into her with little effect (not knowing that AP bullets
were the way to go).

the huge 3-ring binder with all the maps and records of monsters. I
still remember her note from the first town (Sorpigal?): "Sprites kick
your ass." It was our first RPG of any kind.

In Sorpigal we somehow got some Dried Beef. I had no idea what it was
for, so I carried it around for weeks. In mid-game I ran into a dragon
that was going sprite-like on our behinds and she yells "Use the
beef!" I command-used it on the dragon, thinking it might be a
powerful magical artifact. The dragon said "Thanks. Yum!" Dried beef
was food. Who knew? Blew me away.

Also Jedi Knight: Soon after getting the lightsaber; seeing your

Dark Forces: First encounter with Dark Trooper.

X-Wing: Beating Tour I, Mission 4 (the first "How do I win this

(X-Wing Honorable Mention: Killing your first Star Destroyer.)

TIE Fighter: First mission in a TIE Defender.

I'm not sure if (m)any have played this ancient game, Alien, for the C64.
It was mostly a text-based game with graphical map that created the
suspense of waiting for the devastating attack that was sure to come.
The specific moment(s) of interest were key phrases indicating a nearby
alien. One was "Jones the cat is dead." or something like that. There
was another that I can't remember. Those phrases had a rewardingly
strong impact. The one time we managed to get the alien off the ship
was another "great moment".

Definately the escape pod. There wasn't a key for "collapse on the
ground and cry like a baby", so I had to figure out another solution.

I also liked entering an elevator for the first time, after slogging
your way through the level, corpses lying everywhere, then this
happy music starts playing.

Nice story. You're a lucky guy. I would love to find a nice woman who

Man, I was going to mention that one! How about that full-screen animation
of the Alien attack when you witness it "firsthand" they did with the

Can't be bothered registering with a forum to post there once and never
return, so I'll mention Thief 2: The Metal Age here, playing it on a 32" WS TV
at 3am with the sound going loudly-ish through headphones.

In one level (lots of purple I remember) when I was high up in an alcove and
was looking down to an area where three of those big, loud metal creatures
that look like something out of The Fifth Element had been rampaging around.
I'd previously just escaped out of their way.

The next thing they did was to get close to each other and face each other.
They stayed there for about 10 minutes. I figured they'd shut down...

Then they all walked off somewhere out of sight. I thought "Ha! Suckers!"

A couple of minutes later I turned round to leave the alcove. As I turned to
leave one of them was RIGHT next time me. It screeched out loud and shot me
with a fireball. I only had half a second to look in horror, like a scene out
of "Alien" before I was dead.

Both this and the original Resident Evil on the PSX are only two games that
spring to mind as really scaring the shit out of me, particularly when playing
that late at night.

TIE Fighter: First mission in a TIE Fighter and discovering that, yes,

Except that (in hindsite):

1) Does it actually ever explode. It's so easy to get off in a few minutes
(even the first time you play it) that I've never found out.

As I said this is in hindsite; at the time I was panicking, especially when
the sodding sailors started shooting at me - "Get off the ship and out of my
way you b******s".

2) Either way I felt a little let down that we didn't see the ship fall
apart. I didn't want much - just a couple more explosions and the ship to
gradually sink would have been fine.

The Unreal engine isn't great at those kind of things.

Playing Dragon Isle, 40 city, 'I am the Greatest' difficulty level. I
remark to my friend that the game is going really well. He agreed and then
said:
"wait a minute...how many cities do you have?"
"Uh, twenty."
"AND YOU'RE STILL ON YOUR SECOND TURN!?"
"holy sh*t, I am!"

I just barely capped one more city and the computers surrendered. Game
over, 2 turns. I never came remotely close to that performance again.

2) Half-Life

Ton of moments...great game. The scripted satchel charge in the sewer pipe
is particularly memorable. Possibly the best FPS in terms of maintaining a
sense of danger and pressure without having to either die/reload or baby
step everywhere. The game offered you that split second you needed to see
and understand what was happening, react appropriately, and live, but only
if you were on your toes. You didn't already need to know a level to
survive it the first time through.

3) Unreal

Going outside the first time...man that was a jaw-dropper!

4) Diablo

Going back outside *in real life* the first time...

5) Quake

Watching Quake done Quick

6) Whiplash

Much like Stunts!, the physics engine had some very strange quirks. I
landed a jump poorly and my car bounced several thousand feet straight up.
The game got more fun when I stopped racing and tried to find the bugs.
Instant replays are great.

7) Ultima V

Fleeing Blackthorne's palace after taking the Crown. I know it was a turn
