GOG.com is going to put the Broken Sword Director's cut up for free in the 48 hours following their 6,000,000th download. You have to have a GOG.com account before the sale happens, however. Looks like I get to find out if I like it. ;^) (P.S.: If you are D/L #6 mil, you get their whole catalog for free) -- Zag No one ever said on their deathbed, 'Gee, I wish I had spent more time alone with my computer.' ~Dan(i) Bunten

Do they mean Broken sword Director cut of the first Broken sword game, or which one? The only email I got from them a couple of days ago was about the some D&D games on sale this weekend. Mary

Hi Mary, it is the first game, only remastered. It has a new chapter,
new character portraits, and higher res, etc. Once the counter hits 6m
we have 48 hours to get it free. Nice deal, that. I've only played the
original so I might grab it.
To put the counter up, now might be the best time to download a couple
games I already purchased but never got around to downloading. (Maybe if
I time it right, I could win their whole catalog! :-D )
5,817,960 and counting ...

I got the first and second games when they first game out. I liked them fine the way they were, but I will download the Directors Cut just to see what it's like, especially when it's free. I wonder if it will be really busy after 6 million with a lot of people trying to download at the same time. We will see. > To put the counter up, now might be the best time to download a couple > games I already purchased but never got around to downloading. (Maybe if I > time it right, I could win their whole catalog! :-D ) Yes, it would be a good time for you to download a couple of games you purchased but didn't download yet. If you won the whole catalog, it would keep you going for a very long time. I don't need any more games from Gog.com right now. But good luck on being the 6 millionth person and get all these games. :) > 5,817,960 and counting ... Right now at 3.15 pm EDT North America the count is 5,829,400. Thanks for info Matt. Mary

I am in Toronto, same time zone as Eastern U.S. It's 11.55 pm EST now and the count is 5,960,646. The number has gone up quickly and will be close to 6 Million probably tomorrow night. Mary

Go get your free BS. ;^) I checked around 6 pm tonight, and it was past 6 million then. I'm not sure when it got to 6 million. Somebody called "Dofur" or something was the 6 millionth downloader and got all the free games. It will take him a long time to get through all those. Gog did well getting all those downloads. So far I've only downloaded The Directors Cut. When I went online around 6 pm it, the site was pretty slow. So took me over an hour to download it. I will go back for the original BS and download it. I got the game when it first came out but its been a long time since I played it. Mary

Just a warning - this so called Director's Cut according to many fans is nowhere near as good as the original including, believe it or not, the graphics and in particular the opening scene which was quite memorable and set the tone for the entire game. Fortunately the original version is also included in the package so you can experience the game the way it was intended by the creators. ScummVM will probably be required .

Today I saw a message in the forum saying what you said above. I've played the original Broken sword game Circle of Blood, though haven't played it for quite a while. I remember the opening scene. Its a good game and so was BS 2. I only played a small part of the Directors cut tonight, so I will have to see if I like it or not. I will download the original BS in a while. > Fortunately the original version is also included in the package so you > can experience the game the way it was intended by the creators. I don't know anything about ScummVM, but I think Dosbox would work if its not including with the Gog download. I can figure outo Dosbox, but not ScummVM. Mary

I can get Directors cut to work OK, but not Broken sword original. Aren't the games you download from Gog supposed to run with Dosbox already incorporated into the game? I got most other downloaded games to work ok, though not GK 2, which I haven't gone back to. I can get to the intro ok and when I get control of the cursor in the cafe, I can talk to the girl and see the guy there , but when George goes to leave the cafe, and the hand points to the door, when he goes out the door, the game crashes and I am on the desktop. I tried saving a game before George leaves the cafe, but when I start the game again, and click on "Restore" in the Menu, I still end up on the desktop. Anybody have any ideas what the problem might be? Mary

It crashes to my desktop soon after the game starts. Same thing happened when I tried to restore the game from a save. Have you had any trouble running Broken sword original from your download from Gog? Mary

One thing that might help is that this doesn't use DosBox but ScummVM instead, perhaps their forums might be a good place to ask for help. I also see that there are command line "boot params" available which look like you can use to enter the game at one of many predetermined points, like perhaps shortly after your crashy part. Didn't see how to use them, however, and I'd be worried that without knowing the root cause it would just crash again later. :-( -- -craig

I don't know how to use ScummVM. I may have tried it at one time but gave up. I only know how to use Dosbox. I've never heard of boot params. I would have thought other people who downloaded Broken sword (Circle of Blood) the original, would have had the same problem as me. Why me? :) Thanks anyway. There might be an answer on Gog forums. You have a shortcut that starts the game. Right click on it, select
properties. In the target box, edit the end of the path so it looks:
>> "<install dir>\ScummVM\scummvm.exe" -c "<install dir>\sword1.ini"
>> -d0 -b 4 sword1
(So basically just adding) -d0 -b 4 (before sword1)
The bigger question though is why is it crashing in the first place. No
idea I'm afraid ... wait, one idea. Where did you install it? If you put
it under C:\Program Files, try reinstall to C:\Games or somewhere else.
If no luck, you might have to play the Directors Cut instead. :\
I got the free BS but I've yet to download anything. Too many other
games above it on my list. :)

Mary, I was almost right. :) Here is the solution thread:
http://www.gog.com/en/forum/broken_sword_the_smoking_mirror/bs1_original_version_crashes_on_save
In short, you need to edit the "sword1.ini" file located in the game
folder (right click -> open), and remove the line:
savepath="C:\Program Files..." (or whatever)
(If you are running Vista or Win7, it will probably not let you save the
file, which is why you should never install games to "C:\Program Files"
as I mentioned)
Pretty bad oversight from GOG to not have that fixed out of the box.

Only if you want to modify your games (like changing INI values) - not
so necessary for adventure games, I guess. But lots of games in other
genres can benefit from tweaking. Except Win V/7 (not XP) locks the
Program Files folder from any changes. Nothing to worry about, though.

I still wonder if it is the same "savepath" issue. If you want to mess
around (just to satisfy my curiosity :-D ), you could try:
1) uninstall the game
2) reinstall the game to D:\Games\Sword1
(So when the installer asks you where to install, remove the default
path, and type the above exactly)

Sure :-D
So how are you liking the game, Zag? (And which one are you playing, the
original or newfangled version?)
I played the original a few years ago, but it took me a few chapters to
*really* get into it. I was bored early, but then the locations changed
and it somehow got interesting.

Where is the default path? and where do you mean to type in D:\Games\Sword1 ? I am not sure how to do that. Ive usually just installed games or uninstalled them and never needed to change paths or creating different ones, etc. I think it frustrates me that I don't understand the reasons behind the changes. Precisely. Yes. The installer should create the folder for you though.
See below ...

>> default path, and type the above exactly)

The default path (which may be the problem) is something like:
"D:\Program Files\GOG.com\Broken Sword - The Shadow of the Templars\"
(note the spaces and quote marks)
So, uninstall the game, then click the file you downloaded from GOG to
reinstall. At some point *during* installation, it will ask you where
you want to install the game. You will see the default path written in a
text box.
1) Left click to put the cursor in the text box.
2) Push the backspace key until the box is empty.
3) Now type in the path we want:
D:\Games\Sword1
(no quotes needed)
4) Click the 'next' button.
5) The installer should ask if you want to create the folder, as it does
not exist. Click yes, then it should continue as usual.
The reason for the changes is because of MS-DOS. :-D Back then, a file
or folder could only have 8.3 characters for its name. When Win95 came
along, file and folder names could have 255 or so characters, including
spaces, and punctuation! However, old DOS games did not like this, they
prefer 8 characters - no spaces, nothing fancy. Therefore, we need to
enclose *long* file and folder names in quotation marks. That tells
Windows where the path begins and ends, and translates for DOS games to
keep them happy. Or, alternatively in this case, use *small* folder
names with 8 or less characters. Thus, reinstall to D:\Games\Sword1
* (Although, technically, I'm not sure BS1 was a DOS game, I think it
was released 1996 - ? Even so, Win95 was part DOS)
At any rate, Mary, I bet you are sorry you asked! ;-P Not guaranteeing
this idea would work anyway, but it *is* easier than editing INI files
and shortcuts. Perhaps you would have more fun playing the Directors Cut. ;)

It's cool to hear from you. I was recently, as in just 2 or 3 days ago, researching how to get "Frotz" to run in my Windows 7 x64 environment, and I ran across your name while looking over the "blorb" file specs. The only reliable version for Windows 7 x64 is Frotz 2002 (WinFrotz has quirks) and it needed blorb files for games like Zork Zero. I had been using WinFrotz previously. I found no tools (that I could use, I did find a perl script) for converting mg1 to blorb, but I did find that someone had the files available for download. In the end, though, I scrapped Frotz 2002 and went with an original MSDOS Frotz binary I had in mothballs, run through DOSbox. Is anyone in the community working on a version of Frotz newer than "Frotz 2002?" Or did everyone else reach the same conclusion as I: easier to just emulate xxDOS, then use orginal z-interpreters or DOSFrotz? Back to your comment, I check into the IF Competition now and then, but not every year. On-and-off, I've been playing Magnetic Scrolls' "Wonderland," but I haven't had the time lately. Not sure what is hard about that. The UI has been there for quite a while.

Maybe not hard for you. I was just trying it out at the time but didn't like it. It was quite a few years ago. I've never needed ScummVM to play any game I've ever played. Virtual devices is not my thing. Dosbox wasn't easy for me to learn, but I finally was able to learn it. II know how Dosbox works which most times Gog.com uses but this time they used ScummVM for Broken Sword 1. Its the first time Ive downloaded a game from Gog which required me to use ScummVM. I got Broken sword 1 working OK now and didn't have to install ScummVM. I edited the config. so whether that fixed it, I am not sure as I also uninstalled and installed the game.

You probably have used an old version in the past without gui. The current versions under normal circumstances can be used without any config file editing just by choosing the path of the game in the ui which comes with dosbox itself. Btw. there are several old games downloadable for free and legally on the scummvm page, Beneath a Steel Sky and Lure of the Temptress for instance.

We could all download a lot of utilities and programs but if we won't use them, what is the benefit?. I don't think I have ever used ScummVM. I never needed it. When you download games from Gog, Dosbox is incorporated into the games to make the game run and so far and they work fine. When playing games from Gog, you don't need to go to Dosbox website and find out which version will run the game you downloaded. Its already in the games when you download it. Gog and Dosbox work together. You just run the game like any game. Have you never downloaded any DOS games from Gog? The Broken sword 1 game I downloaded from Gog is not typicl Gog download as most of their games use Dosbox to run. I like Dosbox. Its very convenient. > Btw. there are several old games downloadable for free and legally on the > scummvm page, Beneath a Steel Sky and Lure of the Temptress for instance. I played those games when they first came out years ago but I don't want to play them. Beneath a Steel Sky has been free for a long time. Its an OK game.

If I ever need ScummVM, I will worry about it then. Right now, its not on my calendar. > Am 10/6/11 12:36 AM, schrieb Mary: >> "Werner Punz" <werpu@gmx.at> wrote in message >> news:4e8c6c18$0$18697$91cee783@newsreader03.highway.telekom.at... >>> Am 10/2/11 11:30 PM, schrieb Mary: >>> >>>> I will pass on that for now.
