Ho-ho-ho! Game give-away log: Day 15 of the give-away. Already put out more than a dozen games, and yet I am still surrounded by more game keys. Are they multiplying? Will this struggle never end? I hope High Command has learned its lesson about buying extra games (but let's face it, they probably haven't). Today's game is: Knights of Pen & Paper +1 Edition ------------------------------------------ I really liked this simplistic dungeon-crawl RPG; it had charming graphics, solid gameplay and a sense of humor (especially if you are a fan of table-top RPGs). That said, I played it on my phone and I am not sure how well the experience translates over to the PC; you play games on the phone in short sessions (one to ten minutes), whereas generally if you play a game on the computer you are settling in for a while. But I think that the game is solid enough even for extended play periods and have little qualms about adding it to my XMas give-away. Platform: Windows PC Distributor: Steam Key: EQVAP-VR3R2-LP45C (now I wanna play D&D again; where are my funky-shaped dice?) Ho-ho-ho!

I know about this game already. I like the graphics and I rarely meet an RPG I don't like. Thank you.

That one has pretty strong RPG elements in there with XP upgrades, crafting and looting. But pretty much most of the games nowadays have those elements.

More and more I think the blending of genres and de-compartmentalization of features across genres is not a good thing for gaming overall. Once every game starts trying to include all the features that made a game in a seperate genre so popular, they all start to look alike. "Hey, crafting worked in Minecraft so we'd best put that in the next version of Quake". It's the stupid handiwork of marketing folks I think. There's an interesting video floating around (don't have the link at the moment) discussing the making of Doom 4 (not to be confused with Doom 2016) and why it was killed as a project. Basically it started taking on a form that was very unlike its heritage. At some point, they just wised up and said "wait, this isn't Doom anymore", scapped the entire project, and studied the original games to figure out what the basic elements were that made them great. And look how it paid off for them. They even show some of the video clips of the design decisions that were made in Doom 4, and.... yeah.... they did the right thing. Bottom line is when a particular game starts trying to be all things to all people, it's done. Not done as in "complete" but done as in dead.

It's the stupid handiwork of marketing folks I > think. > Actually crafting is way older than Minecraft, in Ultima 6 and 7 you had really strong crafting elements (among lots of other things) So I would say a strong crafting element if done right can be beneficial to an RPG and can help the immersion. Crafting it works quite well for Rise of the Tomb Raider which in its core structure is more an RPG than anything else. The main problem I have with the game is, that the main focus is mostly on Stealth and Combat now with strong RPG elements thrown in and less on Tomb Raiding. Which is still there but only about 10-20% of the game, depending on how many optional sidequests you do. So basically the series went from 3d action puzzle platformers with strong emphasis on platforming and puzzle solving to an action rpg with less emphasis on platforming but more on RPG elements. The plus side is that ROTTR has a way better characterization then the old Tomb Raiders, the writing is 100 times better. Not sure if I like the new series better, it is just different basically a totally different game with a different kind of Lara Croft.

Of course. I only used an example of carrying a Minecraft feature into Quake as a semi-hyperbolic example of marketing-thought.
