Battlefield One -- What a game

I knew it was a winner from the beta, but I didn't realize the extent
until I actually played some of the maps in the release game.

DICE's ability to give you that chaotic feeling of what it must be
like to be involved in huge, large scale battles is unmatched.

Battlefield 3 and 4 were create games but there were certain elements
that were starting to feel a bit recycled (minor improvements) ever
since Bad Company 2.

I guess with the whole WWI thing they decided to rock the boat and do
something different, and they succeeded at their goal in a big way.

The visuals, the sounds, the mechanics, the fun factor. The epitome
of what PC gaming should be.

This game is serious fucking fun. Reviews coming in strong too.

Now if you'll pardon me, my bayonet has a date with some poor
bastard's kidney.

This is definitely the best PC war game since Modern Warfare by a
country mile. I haven't played multi player yet, but the single player
is fantastic all round.

It almost feels like PC gaming is seeing the start of a new era.

I've heard great things about the SP campaign, only negative being
that it's too short. I haven't tried it yet myself.

One thing I fear with a game like this is that folks will try MP and
quickly give up because they are getting killed running out into open
areas. If people join a conquest map via quickmatch, they are likely
to get thrown into a 64 player server, and that can be a pretty
chaotic introduction to multiplayer gaming for those not used to it.

There are some good thoughts here on what Mack says with regard to how
he got past the first hour or so, and learned to play multiplayer the
way it was meant.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J8zCwVwOY2E

For folks not used to MP games or with limited skills, I always
recommend going into servers that only have a few players, in order to
get familiar with the map and shooting mechanics without bullets
flying at you from all around.

Once you get better, having that chaos of potentially being shot from
anywhere is part of what creates intensity, encourages you to take
cover and approach your goals with tactics and caution instead of just
rushing in.

This game is a defining moment in PC gaming history. DICE raised the
bar and it is the shooter by which future shooters will be judged.

Whenever I give a product a glowing review, I always feel compelled to
point out it's flaws whenever I find them, and I did find one.

Currently no joystick support for flying (it can be done but involves
hacky tools). They have acknowledged/apologized for not shipping with
it and said it is a priority fix, so that's good.

Usually in BF games I play for a while on the ground before I mess
with air vehicles. In BF4 I don't think I even used my joystick much,
because I didn't spend much time in jets and found choppers flyable
well enough with the mouse and keyboard.

My expectation for BF1 was a little different though, once I saw it
was a WWI game with biplanes. I have both been a gunner in another's
plane and flown a few. I think gunning is always fun, flying is quite
workable with a gamepad if you spend enough time to get used to it,
but quickly makes you long for a proper joystick. I can't fly those
things with a mouse and keyboard, maybe I haven't tried hard enough
but I don't think I'm that interested.

So while I was a little irked to realize I couldn't just plug in my
old Logitech stick (same one I had when BF1942 was released, BTW, and
still like new!) and go, I was relieved to learn the situation is
temporary and a fix on the way. I'm having enough fun on the ground
to keep me busy.

I predict those gamepad flyers in the air right now are going to get
slaughtered when guys with joysticks get up there with them.

The good news is that the physics of the plane are great, although
certainly arcadish by any simulator lover's standards, they feel good
and are appropriate to the rest of the games fun factor. You really
have to pay a lot of attention to throttle to fly well.

Just to make that statement a little more clear, I was talking about
the in-game planes not real ones.. lol

I probably should have given the reason for the clarification - you
wouldn't believe some of the shit I've been falsely accused of
pretending to have done in this newsgroup in the past. Granted, most
of those people have been killfiled, but as far as I know they still
make a part-time job out of putting my posts under a microscope.

I figured at least one of them was going to think I was somehow saying
I had piloted planes before. The bomber gunner would have been a bit
more difficult for my "dubious fanbase" to reposition to their liking,
but I've seen some pretty old planes still flying so you never know.

But it's download only. No plans for a DVD so I will not buy it. I
just bought Civ VI from Amazon. Only one DVD disc and all it did was
to download the bonus pack. I was up and running with it in about 15
minutes.

I guess the download is a pain for people with slower and metered
connections. I quite lucky in as much as I have 200Mbit unmetered
Internet.

Because I pay the Origin membership fee I get to play BF1 for 10 hours
for 'free'. I've stopped playing though because I like it so much that
I want to experience it as a full game.

The only problem is that I also want Spacehulk Deathwing, Watch_Dogs
2, Dishonoured 2, Civ VI, Infinite Warfare, Titanfall 2, and Gears of
War 4 (at some point).

Mrs Rob will not approve.

I don't think you have to do that. When you buy the full game
everything you did in the trial carries over (think cloud saves).

At least that's true for MP, I think I read its true with SP progress
as well.

That's pretty impressive. I would've expected a huge 10Gb day one patch,
just like pretty much every other game these days.

I am pretty sure that the game/Steam just downloaded teh Aztec
Civilization pack. I did not preorder it but I guess it counted as a
poreorder. I will check again. But no major patches that I know of.
I am still going through the tutorial as it has been many years since
I played a Civ game!

Some of the games that Amazon, etc.... carry say "No disc". I don't
know the point of that since it's just a DVD in a jewel case and no
keycards or whatever.

Thanks

I want to get Deus Ex Mankind Divided for Christmas but can't find a
boxed version for my family to buy for me anywhere.
Looks like it'll have to be Steam gift card which is less nice to wrap
for a present.

Well, another change due to the general public (one of my favorite
bands, by the way) :-)

Not being able to purchase games and other software on CD/DVD
absolutely will stop me from upgrading my computer, graphic card, and
everything else.

I might as well by a console, but which one?

I did just buy Wild Run through amazon with a key as it was $5 cheaper
than through Uplay (no idea why?). It was a DLC though, and the game
had no download for it, it was just unlocked.

I suppose they could give you the PlayStation 4 or Xbox One version and
you could return it to the store and exchange it for a Steam gift card.

Looks like you can buy the collectors edition from Square Enix store
(at least in USA) with fancy box, 9" figurine, art book etc. but it's
pricey.

Yes, I'd seen that. It's just bizarre that they'll sell you the
download code (no packaging) or the collectors edition (massive amount
of waste packaging) but not the one in the middle.

I thought the same thing when I saw it. I guess they figure that the
PC audience is largely going to buy via download, so incurring the
extra supplier chain cost of shipping empty boxes just for the PC
version would need to be passed onto the customer one way or another.
Most customers would get pissed at the thought of paying extra just
for an empty box. So, to appease hardcore fans, collectors and such
they offer the edition with all the additional packaging at premium
price.
